Although Arista has historically been sold to equestrians, the company also offers many styles which are suitable for any active female wanting a stylish, technical, well-fitting garment.

I am very pleased to have been asked to contribute a few words to the Seaside Times Women in Business issue.

Women are entrepreneurial, creative and contribute to the vibrant business climate in our region. The pages of this special supplement are testimony to that fact. From Melinda’s Biscotti to Star Cinema to Muffet & Louisa, we know our favourite local treats, entertainment and high quality products are brought to us by women. From real estate to law to accounting to retail, women on the Saanich Peninsula and on the southern Gulf Islands are providing local jobs, excellent services and innovative products.

I feel guilty mentioning some woman-run businesses and not every single one. Whenever I am strolling down Beacon Avenue, I see friends and businesswomen operating my favourite stores. When I go to meetings of the Saanich Peninsula Chamber of Commerce, especially to the Crystal Ball, I see more businesswomen who are creating value in our community. Pioneers in local food like the women gardeners of Saanich Organics and the wonderful organic champagne-like ciders of Sea Cider are changing our menus.

If we go back to one of the most iconic success stories of our local heritage, a woman is at the heart of it. Jennie Butchart’s story is in some ways the story of an accidental entrepreneur. She was inspired, as we all know, to restore the quarried landscape from her husband’s mining operation into a series of gardens. First, the sunken garden emerged from a hole in the ground, then the Japanese garden and so on. By 1920, 50,000 people a year were coming to see the remarkable blooms and aesthetic triumph of her landscapes.

Now Butchart Gardens is an internationally known tourism destination, adding immeasurably to the visitor experience in our region. Nearly one million people a year visit Butchart Gardens. Chances are that had Jennie Butchart suggested such a thing was possible in the early 1900s, her fanciful notion would have been dismissed out of hand. After all, when she started her gardening project, women did not even have the vote. How seriously would anyone have taken her as a potential business dynamo?

In the 21st Century, things are different. Nevertheless, for all the progress we have made, women still face barriers. That is why this annual publication is important. We need to network, mentor younger women, reach out and support each other.

With a photography background and an eye for detail, Lynne Parker found herself in a growing business, placing online ads for clients. After a start that saw you selling your first spice blends out of the back of your station wagon at fairs and markets, demand quickly grew. Your initial goal was simply to earn a living while staying home with your children – was it scary for you to make the leap into the business world?

No, it was not scary. On the contrary, it was elating. The positive feedback and reinforcement I received was immediate. The leap that was difficult was the first step on the first day. You have to remember that, 20 years ago when I started, people were craving flavour. This was perfect timing for my products as, at the time, there were very few players in my “sandbox” or niche. People tasted, loved, and bought the products. Things happened so quickly and really took off. We will never diverge from our founding axiom of only bringing to market products that are: delicious (of course), affordable, fast and easy to prepare, with easy-to-find ingredients that are healthful.

You work very closely with your daughter, Amelia Warren (CEO of Epicure Selections®). What are some of the benefits you’ve found in working with family?

What makes one successful is not necessarily passed through genetics but, when it is, it’s a gift, as it is in this case. It is a gift personally and also a gift for the company as it provides continuity for the business and has a lot of appeal with our consultants across Canada.

Amelia has many qualities that are and will be essential to move the business forward and that gives me the opportunity to travel and explore new ingredients and products without a shadow of worry. What is especially wonderful is that, just like me, Amelia sees that Epicure as a business is a tool for social change.

Our bottom line is not only measured in revenue, but by the impact of the healthy products that we provide and the entrepreneurial career opportunity we create for tens of thousands of women across Canada.

You’ve just returned from the Canadian Food Summit in Toronto, which discussed some of the latest research, including food security, food safety and

sustainability. What did you take away from this conference?

Groups of stakeholders from business, government, academia and communities came together to create a framework for a coordinated, long-term food

strategy. It’s a huge task that has social, environmental, climatic, economic, technological, commercial, political, world (in)stability and humanitarian ramifications – and the challenges are many. We are seeing the end of cheap food. Food is about to get a whole lot more expensive. The world population is expected to reach nine billion before 2050. How are we going to feed all these people? Food costs will make a bigger dent in household income in the Western world. Recent global unrest, such as the Arab Spring, was spurned by food prices getting higher. I volunteer as a cook for medical NGOs working in Africa – Madagascar, Senegal, and the Burkina Faso – where, if the price of rice goes up even by few cents, it creates hardship and can make the difference between eating or going without.

You have always provided products that are low in sodium and contain no additives or preservatives. With growing importance being placed on non-toxic, unprocessed food, what direction do you see future products taking?

More of the same. I do not sell anything that I would not feed my family. We have had the opportunity to sell products that would do well on the market and make a profit for the company, but their ingredients did not meet our criteria for healthfulness and we would not offer them. I consider it part of our social responsibility philosophy to ensure that we keep our ingredients healthful.

What foods make up your perfect meal?

The perfect meal is one I would make myself to share with family and friends. It is made with

fresh seasonal ingredients, with complexity in the layers of well-balanced (Epicure) flavours!

March 8th is marked as International Women’s Day around the world, and Seaside Times is taking part in this celebration with this special issue. In your experience, locally and internationally, how can you relate to the changes that have happened over the years with the status of women worldwide?

Unfortunately, and especially in Canada, women continue to be grossly under-represented in government and business leadership. While some gains have been made, men continue to out-earn women in almost every job category. At Epicure, we continue to be passionate about igniting the entrepreneurial spirit in women and providing careers with no glass ceilings.

You are a true entrepreneur and live among a community filled with other successful women. What advice would you give to women who want to bring their businesses to the level that you have achieved?

My favourite quote is: “it takes more courage than talent to succeed” by Jacques Brel and it about sums up what it takes. Hard work, long lonely hours, fail forward (make the most of your mistakes), good enough never is, and overnight success takes years … .

Your business sits on 80 acres of designated Agricultural Land Reserve in North Saanich. What are you doing on site that’s helping make a commitment to local agriculture?

When I bought the farm eight years ago, the property had not been operated as a farm for years. To meet minimum requirements for ALR/farm status, we simply had to grow hay on the south field. However, meeting only the minimum requirement is not Epicure’s or my style. My family and I love this piece of land and we are going to great lengths to restore it. Over the past eight years, we have completed work on environmentally sensitive drainage systems to make the soil more productive, planted 1,200 walnut trees, thousands of lavender plants and a half-acre organic vegetable garden for our Home Team Members. We’ve implemented a restoration project to protect and rehabilitate our Garry Oak meadow and established one of, if not the largest, vineyard on the Peninsula, which covers a little more than seven acres. In addition to the six varietals of grapes and wine we produce, we are experimenting with growing new, disease-resistant varietals to reduce environmental impact and ripen more reliably in our climate. We have also participated in the creation of an environmental farm plan to promote sustainable farming practices and we are reviewing all aspects of the farm to see if there can be more productive uses of the land over the short and long term.

For the past 30 years the Porter family has been serving up food to hungry customers on the corner of Keating Cross and West Saanich roads.

Cory Porter is now passing on the family tradition to two of his daughters, Jenifer Porter and Carley Panzer. Our Team | Saanich Peninsula Hospital FoundationWe all cared for Betty…

Sometimes one person has a profound impact on an organization. That was Betty Spence: Auxiliary member, volunteer, donor and lovely gentle woman.

Inspired by her are the women of the Saanich Peninsula Hospital Foundation, including Executive Director Karen Morgan and Administrative Assistant, Lesley Webb. Karen and Lesley have been a team for twelve happy and fulfilling years, watching the hospital and its many gardens grow. They love the hospital and the work they do in support of it. “We are so fortunate to have caring staff and doctors, as well as a beautiful, healing location.” says Lesley. Karen adds: “This work is the most fun you can have and still get paid!”

Fun it may be, but it’s impossible for two people (even if they do work more than full-time) to manage the demands of raising over $3 million, as the Foundation did in 2011. So they turn to three contractors (also women), who assist on a part-time basis. Linda Doctoroff has a real talent for sales and has made Foundation events wildly successful by securing sponsor-ships from local businesses. Donna Randall’s skills in writing and relationship building are brought to the task of obtaining grants from corporations and foundations, as well as implement-ing a legacy giving program (mostly bequests). And near the end of the month you will find the multi-talented Angela Aarts in the office, doing the accounting. Having worked for the provincial Auditor General, you just know she’s great with figures!

These five women bring a formidable range and depth of experience to the Foundation. Their pride in, and passion for, the work they do is contagious, but they all acknowledge that they wouldn’t be there if it weren’t for the people of the Saanich Peninsula, who tell them regularly, “It’s our hospital”, where staff care for friends and neighbours like Betty.
