PRESIDENT’S REPORT

2011 was a very successful season for the Nuriootpa Hockey Club both on & off the

field.

123 players pulled on the green and gold this year. We had a team in every grade of

the BVHA competition including 2 teams in the u13/14 grade. Of our 8 full field

teams, 7 made the finals, an incredible 6 made the GF & we won four premierships,

including the big 2 – A grade women & A grade men as well as under 15‟s & under

13.

Off field our club has been very competently run by a large willing committee. I would

personally like to thank the entire committee for their effort, time & commitment that

they willingly put into this great club.

Our coaches & team managers were committed & professional and I believe their

efforts and high standards continue to give us the competitive edge.

To all our volunteers, supporters & club sponsors – thank you all for your continued

support.

Our main objectives this year were to increase the number of club players,

reinvigorate our junior programmes, increase the number of club social functions &

develop our club umpires. I believe we delivered on the first three objectives in 2011.

Our umpiring development still needs improvement & we will continue to focus on

improving our junior development in 2012.

Nuriootpa Hockey Club is fully supportive of the artificial pitch proposal for Stockwell

that is nearing the all important grant application stage. We are also supporting the

Stockwell Recreation Park with the expansion of the existing clubrooms as well as

solving the quality concerns with the top fields.

Sponsorship agreements will hopefully be agreed over the summer months.

We are part of a special club. Players & club members from the early years can now

watch & support their children as they take their place on the field for the Nuriootpa

Hockey Club. The lucky ones even get to play a season or two with the next

generation. This history generates tradition & passion and helps makes our club

what it is.

Thanks again to all of you who contributed to Nuriootpa Hockey Club in 2011, I am

very proud and honoured to have been President of this club for the past year.

Kind regards

Phil Armstrong

MINKEY REPORT

The 2011 season was a successful one; thanks mainly, to the work done in the

schools and the volunteers involved during the season.

The main priority was to recruit more juniors into the system, as there was no model

set by the club to do this. As a club we were able to team up with Hockey SA and

use their resources of instructors and safe kid based hockey drills that would

demonstrate our game in good light, and then utilise this opportunity to recruit

members to our club.

Phil Armstrong, Marty Gallasch and I represented our club on visits to Greenock

Creek and Nuriootpa Primary School. It was very successful in achieving some

members, but just as noteworthy was three established club juniors in Meikaela

Milne, Tyler Burgess and Elijah Cornish continued to market the game and our club

by playing lunch time hockey at Nuriootpa Primary School. The fruits of their efforts

should be noticeable next season.

The club had one u11 and one u9 team this season with the u9 grade being the

challenge of finding kids. Two weeks before the season began I had two definite and

three maybes; by the first game I had 10 players! A big thanks here, goes to the

parents. Now that we are into schools this will alleviate some of the Minkey recruiting

issues, but we must utilize this to full potential and look into other avenues to

continue to drive numbers through this entry level. If we strive for more teams then

this is necessary.

Regarding the u9 season most were first time players, and in their first game it was

one of „tackle anyone, including your team mates that had the ball‟. By the end of the

season they had developed both their individual and team game, so much so, they

started to triumph. A big thanks to Connor Armstrong for his involvement on

Thursday‟s, applying my thoughts on what needed developing, into drills. As he was

not available Saturday mornings, he did a great job!

I continued my role as u11 coach. Having the combination of two sides into one this

season, I knew immediately they would be strong. With that knowledge I tried to

develop their individual and team dynamics of a higher standard. The combination

of this and experience of playing in the u13‟s allowed the players to flourish and

achieve so much more during the season.

I encouraged them to see themselves as hockey players and not just kids by

allowing them to take responsibility for their individual and team success. You can

never be too young to learn this!

They displayed this in every game during the season, one that finished with an

unblemished record.

Page 12: SEASON 2011 ANNUAL REPORT · 4.3 Minkey Report 4.4 A Men Report 4.5 A Women Report 5 Election of Office Bearers 5.1 President 5.2 Vice President 5.3 Secretary 5.4 Treasurer 6 Election

I also organised a junior umpiring program using seven juniors with each of them

being supplied a mentor. Feedback was positive and as a club we should continue to

build on this concept, targeting only the juniors that really want to be involved.

After the last round was completed the B.V.H.A with, special guest Holly Evans,

presented all players with a certificate of participation.

That night we had our Minkey presentations at the Ten Pin Bowl, which was another

success. Thanks to Dimchurch Vineyards (Adrian and April Hoffmann) for

sponsorship of the night, including medallions. Phil Armstrong and I said a few

words before handing out medallions to the kids. In closing thanks went to the many

volunteers that coached, umpired and mentored, and for giving their time and

making the environment for our junior‟s one where they could develop and enjoy.

Next season will be one of interest regarding recruitment; first to follow up on the

schools we have promoted hockey to, as well as the next set of schools. In this early

stage there is only one u9 team, and a few u11‟s, as the majority of kids in this age

group become full field players. So it‟s all about being proactive (getting into schools,

asking parents and the kids to encourage their friends to participate) and not to rely

on the hope that new members turn up on rego day.

A MEN REPORT

In my third and final season as coach an objective I set was to introduce our young

men to a-grade hockey, where we wanted these guys to have a taste of it, know

what it takes to be an a grade player, and then use that knowledge to go about

earning your place in the side.

It was then a matter of implementing a plan to introduce the young lads to the

competition, and be able to manage that in collaboration with the team concepts, so

as not to disrupt the focus of developing a side for finals.

Being a third season, introducing such a task with so many variables was done much

easier as the established players were already familiar with certain principles.

Overall, myself and the leadership group, handled this very well with the

understanding the side would not be settled into a squad until the third round after

the qualification date. There were advantages and disadvantages to this, but it was

necessary regarding the bigger picture!

One advantage by settling later allowed everyone the opportunity to earn themselves

a role in the side, creating competition for spots, and once established the focus

immediately turned to finals.

Competition was the strongest it has been for years. Most games against our

respective opposition were decided by one or two goals, with Two Wells and us

fighting for top spot. Tanunda and AMU stepped up their game, as did Trinity in

many respects, and if it was not for lack of numbers Gawler could have easily been

in the mix.

Somewhat of a surprise as AMU earned their place alongside us in the Grand Final,

but only teams that demonstrate humility and respect towards opponents and to their

chosen sport should end up representing their association on the biggest stage.

Finishing in a contest that won‟t be soon forgotten we were able to capture our 9th

Grand Final victory in a row!

A WOMEN REPORT

The 2011 season was a interesting affair for the A grade ladies with some highs and

lows over the year it culminated with a huge high as the ladies took out the

premiership, defeating rival AMU 1-0 in the Grand final.

The season began with a lengthy pre season period during which the majority of the

group trained consistently and with enthusiasm for around 12 weeks. During that

time the group worked mainly on fitness but also on basic skills with both A grade

players and B grade players taking part. The most notable development was cross

training sessions with local Muay Thai trainers which broke up the trainings and were

very much enjoyed by the group.

The season proper was a challenging affair with a very different squad from 2010 on

the field and a run of injuries, illness and work commitments that limited several

players‟ ability to train and play. Training was especially difficult with key players

often unable to take part. A huge thank you to the core group of players who made

a big effort to be at training even when unable to take part. Off field difficulties aside

the performances on game day were good all year and team cohesion gradually

improved over the season resulting in many strong results.

Multiple players were given the opportunity to experience the A grade game over the

season, most notably Juniors Lily Armstrong, Samantha James and Caitlyn Fameli,

along with seniors Sarah Koop and Jess Griffiths. Lily went on to play in the grand

final winning side becoming the youngest player to win an A Grade premiership for

the club. These players and others who played during the season highlighted the

depth of talent in the club and also the excellent work of the B grade ladies over the

season.

The side finished 2nd on the ladder after the minor rounds behind AMU after a couple

of frustrating matches against that side and survived a scare against Gawler in the

preliminary final to qualify for the Grand Final which as I mentioned they went on to

win in a thrilling match.

On the social side the ladies bonded well off the field continuing to socialise together

regularly and enjoy each other‟s company as friends as well as team mates which I

believe is critical to a successful team. My thanks go to the Leadership group of

Donna Milne, Kim “Thomo” Doecke, Renee Bishop and Nikki Rowley for their

assistance and frank feed back during the season, also Thanks to Nikki for

managing the side during the year which was a challenging role.

15

There was huge improvement in some players personal skills this year and the

general execution of the sides game plan was also an improvement on the 2010

season but I believe there is still plenty of improvement left for this group to achieve

and would very much like to continue coaching the side in the coming season and

beyond, we have an exciting group of young players coming through the ranks

which I believe can blend well with the experience and skill of current players to

create a side that can become the dominant force in Barossa women‟s hockey for

years to come.

Well done Ladies.

NURIOOTPA HOCKEY CLUB - GUIDELINES

The Nuriootpa Hockey Club values all members, playing and non-playing, and recognises that each has a role to play within the Club.

Nuriootpa Hockey Club is a registered Aussie Sport club and endorses the Aussie Sport Codes of Behaviour. (Those Codes will be distributed annually to each member.)

The Nuriootpa Hockey Club guidelines will be adhered to where possible, although The Club appreciates that this will not always be in the best interest of certain players/teams and there will always be exceptions.

Teams and team selection

Full field teams will consist of no more than 13 players if possible in order to offer maximum playing time to all members.

All members of a team will be considered as having an equally important role to play, regardless of gender, age, ability or position on the field.

As near as possible players (in full field teams) should receive equal playing time throughout the season, dependant on attendance, reliability and attitude at training. During finals all players should be given a "fair go" and receive reasonable time on the field. The Club acknowledges that children play sport for various reasons and that a lack of playing time is a major reason for children "dropping out" of sport.

All players in the Minkey (U9 and U11) competitions will have equal time on the field each game and will be given the opportunity to play in all positions throughout the season. While this may mean the loss of some games that could have been won the Club feels that the opportunity to participate is more important than winning at this level.

Where the Club enters two or more teams in the same competition:

- those teams will be selected to be as even as possible, - the selection of the teams will be made by the current coaches with input from

previous coach/es, Minkey and junior coordinators as appropriate, - final teams selection will not be made until after the pre-season lightning carnival

(players will train together until that time).

Junior players will be encouraged to play in their own age group and will only be offered a second match in a higher grade if insufficient numbers in that higher grade.

Coaching, Team Management and Training

A team manager will be appointed for each full field team (whose role will be to assist the coach in whatever way possible - distribute newsletters, collect subs and other moneys, attend to first aid etc).

Coaches of Minkey and junior teams should make a personal commitment to keep themselves informed of the principles of growth and development of children.

Specialist coaches should be utilised where possible, eg goalkeeping.

Players playing their second match for the day will start on the bench if there are more than eleven other team members present.

Page 17: SEASON 2011 ANNUAL REPORT · 4.3 Minkey Report 4.4 A Men Report 4.5 A Women Report 5 Election of Office Bearers 5.1 President 5.2 Vice President 5.3 Secretary 5.4 Treasurer 6 Election

Nuriootpa Hockey Club Annual Report 2011

17

If a player is awarded a "yellow card" during the course of a match, that player, upon completion of his/her time behind the goal, will immediately be benched for a length of time determined by the coach.

Junior players regularly playing a second match should attend training for that second team if at all possible.

Any junior coach with queries/problems during the season is to first approach the Junior Coordinator. Senior coaches are to approach the Club President.

Safety Issues

The Club will undertake to prevent injury to players by:

ensuring that adequate supervision is provided by qualified and competent coaches and team managers capable of developing appropriate sports behaviour and skills;

organising clinics in Sports Medicine, Injury Prevention and Management, First Aid, Coaching etc;

encouraging coaches, team managers, umpires, players and parents to attend these clinics to enable them to pass on the correct knowledge;

providing a relevant, up-to-date first aid kit for each team - to be brought to each match by the team manager (along with ice);

regularly inspecting playing fields, training areas, equipment and facilities (including the change rooms and toilets) to ensure that they are safe;

providing all goal keepers with suitable, modern protective gear and maintaining and/or replacing that gear as necessary;

encouraging the wearing of mouthguards and shin pads by all field players;

ensuring all players are taught skills appropriate to their age and ability level and are provided with the opportunity to play in a competition that matches those skills (this may include lobbying the BVHA to provide an appropriate competition eg modified sport);

ensuring all players follow safe sport practices at training and matches (including warming up, stretching, cooling down, fluid replacement);

encouraging players to maintain an acceptable level of fitness;

The Nuriootpa Hockey Club endorses the BVHA's infectious diseases policy which is printed annually in the match program.

Misc. No trophies will be awarded at Minkey level. All Minkey players shall receive a

participation award. At other levels (junior and senior) three trophies only per team to be awarded. The naming of the trophies is at the discretion of the coaches.

Players will be encouraged to watch other club teams' matches to engender a strong club spirit (e.g. juniors to watch senior games and seniors to watch Junior/Minkey games).

Parents are asked to discuss any problems directly with the team coach. Failing a suitable reply, parents should contact the Junior/Senior Coordinator.

Nuriootpa Hockey Club players and supporters will respect umpire's decisions and not bring disrepute on the game by their actions on and off the field.
