MEDITATION Award-winning news show airs on Channel 3 in Grand Forks
GRAND FORKS, N.D. — Find out what it’s like to live in a tent on Earth’s coldest continent
and how certain breathing techniques can reduce anxiety on the next edition of Studio One.
Antarctica is an unusual camping destination. However, one man says research on this icy
continent, “is an adrenaline rush.” Geology professor Jakko Putkonen speaks about his
experiences living in one of the most remote places on Earth. With temperatures around 15
degrees Fahrenheit in the summer and unknown lows during the winter, the region remains a
mystery to the world. Watch Studio One to hear what Putkonen learned in a place that Google
maps has not even fully explored.
Also on the show, UND meditation specialist Lora Sloan explains different reflection techniques

spine are some tools that help relieve tension. Watch Studio One to learn more about this

STUDIO ONE FEATURES SEGMENTS ON DEVILS LAKE FLOODING AND E-READERS
Award-winning news show airs on Channel 3 in Grand Forks
GRAND FORKS, N.D. — Overland flooding has been a concern for many in the Devils Lake Region of North
Dakota. Find out how the growing waters are leading to growing problems on the next edition of Studio One.
A wet cycle and a lake that doesn‟t have an outlet is leading to a swampy situation in some areas of North Dakota.
According to Paul Todhunter University of North Dakota geology professor, Devils Lake has transformed from a
knee-deep pond to a natural hazard in 70 years. “Devils Lake is shaped like a bowl and we have filled the bottom
part of the basin all the way up and now the only part left to fill is the flat outer „plate edges‟ which means that the
only place the lake can go is outward much faster than it has been,” he explains. Watch Studio One to learn what
this expert says can help prevent rural areas from going underwater.
Also on the show, many students are used to lugging a heavy backpack to class but new technology is offering a
way to lighten the load on the shoulders as well as environment. Some students are now downloading
textbooks with “E-Readers.” Students can load many books onto one electronic device, such as the Kindle or
Nook. Amazon.com says E-Book purchases outsold paperback books in 2010. Some say that this technological
trend is also catching on with staff and faculty in higher education.

STUDIO ONE FEATURES SEGMENTS ON EYESTRAIN AND FAST FOOD Award-winning news show airs on Channel 3 in Grand Forks
GRAND FORKS, N.D. — Learn how to give fatigued eyes some relief with a simple
focusing exercise and find out what is really in your drive-thru tacos on the next edition
of Studio One.
Daily activities such as driving and spending time in front of a PC can be tough on the
eyes. Overuse of the eye muscles can lead to “eyestrain”. This condition causes people to
experience blurred vision or a hard time focusing. North Dakota Eye Clinic Optometrist
Tom Dunham says permanent damage is possible when eyestrain goes untreated.
Dunham will explain how doing eye “push-ups” can prevent this condition and also bring
relief to overworked eyes.
Also, many people prefer the convenience and low cost of fast food. However, there is a
price to pay for eating speedy meals. According to registered dietician Allen Anderson,
those drive-thru dinners are high in trans-fat and low in actual meat. Tune into Studio
One this week to see how unhealthy a steak burrito or onion rings can be for consumers.

miles of brass accents, 100,000 feet of Italian granite and all leather seats are some of the
highlights of the Ralph Engelstad Arena. Learn about the tradition and extravagance of

STUDIO ONE FEATURES SOCIAL CHANGE AND CLASSIC CARS
Award-winning news show airs on Channel 3 in Grand Forks
GRAND FORKS, N.D. — Sociologists say that community movements develop in
patterns and in order to get media attention, the “right” type of people are instrumental in
generating momentum for a cause.
Jeffery Langstraat, sociology professor at the University of North Dakota, says that
"movement entrepreneurs" are often the people who initiate a cultural change. Langstraat
will discuss motives behind social sentiments and why certain age groups are more likely
than others to initiate attention toward a cause.
Also, many people consider the end of winter to be warmer weather or when the trees are
budding. Another sign of the coming of spring is the return of classic cars on the road.
Stan Orness, a classic coupe collector, repairs and refurbishes these automotive works.
See how some vehicle enthusiasts make a junk heap on wheels into something people are
willing to pay to see.

STUDIO ONE FEATURES ROCK STAR WRITER AND MENTAL HEALTH
PROFESSIONAL
Award-winning news show airs on Channel 3 in Grand Forks
GRAND FORKS, N.D. — Many dream of being rock stars. One man gets to routinely meet the
people living this dream. Writer, Carl Arrington, has profiled many famous icons. He has
written over 20 cover stories for People magazine. He has also appeared on stage with musician
Ozzie Osborne and written feature stories for Rolling Stone and Time magazine. Find out more
about this well-versed writer during his interview on Studio One.
Also, health issues are a national concern. This week’s Studio One guest will talk about physical
conditions that have more subtle but serious symptoms.
The National Institution of Mental Health says that more than 26 percent of the U.S. population
was diagnosed with a mental disorder in 2010. Jacque Gray is one of only 1000 trainers in
mental first aid in the U.S. Her specialty is educating people on how to accurately read signs of
a mental crisis and to de-escalate situations. “Mental health first aid is to help someone who is
having a panic attack, who is delusional or is suicidal. It teaches you what to do in the crisis and
to stabilize the person so they can get the help they need,” says Gray. Tune into Studio One to

STUDIO ONE FEATURES HAT TRENDS AND GENERATIONAL DIFFERENCES Award-winning news show airs on Channel 3 in Grand Forks
GRAND FORKS, N.D. — Hats are often thought of as an older fashion accessory, but last
week’s royal wedding gave this trend new life. Meet a group of people who are finding new
ways to top off an outfit on the next edition of Studio One.
Hats in the U.S. are mostly made up of baseball and cowboy hats. A head covering shaped like a

their surplus of hats is trying to help keep the trend moving and get more craniums covered in
feathers, fruit, and fun.
Also, the workplace is dynamic. Employees from different generations have varying
communication styles. Leadership Educator, Vicki Simonson focuses on maximizing
productivity through better management of the generational mix. She explains that there are four
different groups in today’s work-force: traditionalists, Baby Boomers, Generation X and
Generation Y. She explains how understanding differences can lead to greater cohesion in
almost any industry.
