Philharmonic Board President Remembers Music Director Charles Ellis as the Prince George’s Philharmonic Moves Forward

E xcitement filled the air a year ago, at the

opening night of the Prince George’s

Philharmonic’s 50th concert season! Maestro

Charles Ellis told the audience that this 50th season

(2015-16) also marked his 15th anniversary as the

Philharmonic’s Music Director, and that he had never

been more excited about the programs that he had

planned. So the celebratory season began - with the

planned six performances, two special recitals, the

return of the orchestra’s previous conductors, and

honors for the longest performing players and staff.

But after the first two concerts, on New Year’s Day 2016, Charles Ellis passed

away unexpectedly, leaving the orchestral community in shock. Through sadness

and tears, the orchestra banded together under Maestro Ellis’s chosen assistant,

Blair Skinner, determined to finish the 50th season as Ellis had planned it.

At the beginning of the final concert of the season, Mahler’s Symphony No. 2,

the “Resurrection,” I could almost hear Chuck’s voice saying “I have never been

more excited about our planned programs.” And what an exciting concert that

was! With the Clarice Smith concert hall nearly filled, and the joyous reception

that followed, I felt that Chuck heard us and joined in the celebration! I think that

all of us felt his presence!

Now we go on to begin our 51st season, planned a full year ago by Charles

Ellis. It will be a different and very special season, for each of our concerts

will be conducted by a candidate to fill the position of Music Director of the

Philharmonic. It will include several of the great monuments of orchestral music,

such as the Brahms Concerto for Violin and Cello, Beethoven’s Piano Concerto

No. 3, the Schubert Mass in G Major, and the gorgeous Adagietto from Mahler’s

Symphony No. 5; and it will feature outstanding soloists, including previous

favorites, Rita Sloan and Brian Ganz. It will be a challenging, exciting, even

suspenseful season, and, at the end of it, we will choose our next Music Director.

Please join us for this exciting new season of great music!
