OUR VISION IS UNLIMITED

BUT OUR FUNDING IS NOT…

We are an award-winning theatre and registered charity with

an international reputation, rooted in our community for

over 50 years. We make a positive contribution to people’s

lives and to the vibrant theatre sector, producing new work

that speaks to the people of Britain in all their diversity.

We are proud to be a part of Arts Council England’s National

Portfolio and are also very grateful to receive support from the

London Borough of Newham. However, in order to deliver our

programme we need to raise at least £300,000 every year.

We would like to say a big “thank you” to the individuals, trusts and

companies who support us and hope you are inspired to join them.

INDIVIDUALS

Become a member of our Vision Collective from as little as £250 to enjoy

a range of invitations to special events and get closer to life at the theatre.

Alternatively, you could name a seat or make a one-off donation.

BUSINESSES

We have a range of business partnerships, young people’s work

and production sponsorship opportunities available and would

be delighted to tailor a package to suit your brand or CSR

requirements. Join ArcelorMittal, Devonshires Solicitors and

Telford Homes as Business Supporters and Partners.

For more information please contact Asma Hussain, Development

Officer, on 020 8279 1124 or email [email protected].

OUR VISION IS UNLIMITED

BUT OUR FUNDING IS NOT…

A very warm welcome to Theatre Royal Stratford East.

2014 has already been an exciting year for us. We hope you’ll join us for

some great new work coming up this season.

As you know we’re committed to new writing and kick off with Spoiling,

a new political comedy that tackles the prospect of Scottish independence

days before the referendum and comes fresh from the Edinburgh Festival.

We have more new writing in October: our long-time collaborator Paul

Grootboom is back with Rhetorical, a new play about South Africa’s

second post-apartheid president Thabo Mbeki. For the first time we are

producing our work next door at Stratford Circus.

Fans of new British musicals should check out The Infidel -

The Musical by David Baddiel and Erran Baron Cohen. Expect lots of

fun and magic this Christmas as we bring you our latest panto, Beauty &

The Beast. Moving into the New Year Oh What A Lovely War returns for

a strictly limited run before embarking on a national tour.

Finally, following on from the critically-acclaimed Kingston 14, playwright

Roy Williams returns with a new adaption of Sophocles’ classic, Antigone.

As we did earlier this year with Oh What A Lovely War we’re launching

our second national schools programme alongside this show.

The majority of shows last season sold out weeks before opening,

so please don’t wait too long to book if something takes your fancy -

our ticket prices are cheaper at the beginning of every run, so again

do book early.

A huge thank you to all of our current supporters. Your unwavering

support is immensely important to us and helps us to continue

producing great work.

Best wishes

Kerry Michael

In front of the world’s media, Scotland’s Foreign Minister will shortly

deliver a keynote speech outlining the newly-independent nation’s

relationship with the former UK.

But there’s a problem. She’s refusing to speak the words she’s been given.

There’s something else she wants to say. At odds with her party, and

pursued by a harassed Party worker, she has a decision to make; toe the

line or take back control.

This timely piece, presented days before the Scottish Independence

Referendum and fresh from a run at the Edinburgh Festival will be

directed by the award-winning Traverse Artistic Director Orla O’Loughlin.

and impact on citizens.

Don’t miss the brilliantly funny new musical The Infidel as it premieres

at Theatre Royal Stratford East this autumn. Based on David Baddiel’s

smash hit movie of the same name, this hilarious and heart-warming tale

is the ultimate identity crisis comedy.

East End Muslim Mahmoud is an ordinary family man whose life is

turned upside down when he discovers that not only is he adopted, but

that his birth parents are Jewish. The resulting cultural and religious

chaos leads to an uproarious and insightful comedy about race,

prejudice, confusion and what it really means to be yourself.

After a sell-out run in 2014 coinciding with the First World War Centenary, Oh

What A Lovely War returns for a strictly limited run prior to a UK national tour.

Built upon the songs that ordinary British soldiers sang during a war that killed

ten million in four years, this Musical Entertainment production is a powerful

comment against war. A riot of music and colour, brilliantly comic and deeply

moving, this newly reimagined production remains true to the spirit of Joan

Littlewood’s 1963 original.

Don’t miss this opportunity to see the iconic production at its home venue.

When Creon refuses to bury the body of Antigone’s unruly brother, her

anger quickly turns to defiance. Creon, in an attempt to retain control,

condemns her to a torturous death - she’s to be buried alive.

In this new version by acclaimed playwright Roy Williams (Kingston 14,

Sucker Punch), Sophocles’ play is staged within a contemporary setting,

bringing Thebes into the 21st Century.

Antigone is a story about loyalty, truth and human nature and what

happens when one person stands against the rules.

Joan Littlewood had a vision: to create a Fun Palace where people could

come and explore, experiment, try new things, play and connect.

‘Choose what you want to do - or watch someone else doing it! Learn

how to handle tools, paint, babies, machinery, or just listen to your

favourite tune. Dance, talk or be lifted up to where you can see how

other people make things work. Sit out over space with a drink and

tune in to what’s happening elsewhere in the city. Try starting a riot

or beginning a painting - or just lie back and stare at the sky.’
