We Hear God’s Word

Hebrew Bible Reading Genesis 1:26-28 CEB

27 God created humanity in God’s own image,

in the divine image God created them,

male and female God created them. 28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fertile and multiply; fill the earth and master it. Take charge of the

fish of the sea, the birds in the sky, and everything crawling on the ground.”

A Reading from Psalm 8 CEB 8 LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name throughout the earth!

You made your glory higher than heaven! 2 From the mouths of nursing babies you have laid a strong foundation

because of your foes, in order to stop vengeful enemies. 3 When I look up at your skies, at what your fingers made—

the moon and the stars that you set firmly in place— 4 what are human beings that you think about them;

what are human beings that you pay attention to them? 5 You’ve made them only slightly less than divine, crowning them with glory and grandeur. 6 You’ve let them rule over your handiwork,

putting everything under their feet— all sheep and all cattle, the wild animals too, 8 the birds in the sky, the fish of the ocean,

everything that travels the pathways of the sea. 9 LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name throughout the earth!

We Respond in Faith Invitation for Prayer

You are invited to share your prayer request by writing your prayer on the prayer card in your pew.

Prayers will be added to our prayer requests unless you indicate otherwise.

Prayer Song Lord, I Need You Words & Music: Chris Tomlin

Prayers of the People

One: Earth has its own knowing. And we, as we learn to repent, can give in to the gravity of its wisdom.

All: We surrender our human knowing to Earth’s intelligence and pray for those who struggle with

loneliness and confusion.

One: May we experience our own innocence as the force, a type of gravity, that pulls us closer to Earth and

closer to one another so that we begin to see our falling and failure as opportunities to take the humblest

part in the order of creation.

All: We pray for patience to trust and we pray for those who are learning to fall and learning to fly.

Prayer of Jesus: Our God has many names. You are invited to address God in your native language or

in the form closest to your heart as we join in the prayer of Jesus:

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as in

heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass

against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the

power, and the glory forever. Amen. FROM THE RITUAL OF THE FORMER METHODIST CHURCH

Offering our Gifts *Singing our Thanksgiving Praise God from Whom All Blessings Flow UMH #95

*Prayer of Dedication

One: We pledge, O God, to discover how much is enough for us to be truly fulfilled, neither rich nor

poor, and to consume only that.

All: We pledge, O God, to be part of the discovery of how much is enough for everyone; not only to

survive but to thrive, and find ways for all to have access to that. May this offering of restraint

and justice teach us to live like Jesus – healing our lives and the life of the world. Amen.

We Go Forth in God’s Spirit
