Here we go Georgia fans. Another Dawgs’ football season beckons and where shall I begin? You would have to be living under a rock not to understand what the arrival of Jeremy Pruitt has meant to the Georgia defense. Pruitt’s no, non-sense approach is just what the doctor ordered, in my opinion. At this point, there are ZERO named starters on the Georgia D. And according to Pruitt (in Murray Poole’s story on page 6) that will be the case deep into Fall Camp this August. You gotta love it! And not surprisingly, the Pruitt effect doesn’t appear to be for everyone as sev-eral players have opted to transfer else-where. You hate to see guys move on, but if their hearts are no longer with Georgia, then their departure is best for all parties. Since day one, what I liked the most about Pruitt is how he’s all about funda-mentals and he won’t complicate things if folks aren’t grasping what he’s after. For years, we at BI have been begging for our team to play sound football. I call it doing the little things correctly. In Murray’s sto-ry on page 13, Coach Richt, Coach Lilly and Coach Ekeler give some insight on how the team is progressing on the little things. Now, let’s talk about one of my favor-ite topics and that’s running the football. On page 14, Murray asked Coach Richt, Coach Bobo and Coach McClendon a familiar question from BI, will our of-fense keep to its long tradition of equal balance between running and passing the football? Or will they just let Todd Gur-ley take his team to the promised land? I give our coaches credit for their con-sistency because balance is what we can expect again in 2014. Now, I get all the talk about defenses being able to stack the box and shut down even the best run-ning backs. But I would have to counter that everyone in the Georgia Dome knew Alabama was going to keep running the football in the third and fourth quarter of the 2012 SEC Championship. And guess what? It didn’t matter because they

gashed our defense over and over again. Still I have faith in Mike Bobo because he has shown, from time to time, that he understands that there is nothing more demoralizing for the other team than to know what’s coming and still not be able to do anything to stop it. The above stories are just a few of the many football nuggets in this issue to get you fans primed and ready for the 2014 season. Both Jeff Dantzler (pages 4, 5) and Murray Poole (11) go game by game. And as he does every year, Mur-ray makes his annual prediction. 10-2 is solid. Would you take that right now? I probably would. On page 12, JD goes position by po-sition which is always interesting. To me, how Hutson Mason will perform and the competition for his back-up will be in-triguing to follow. And who knows what our defense is going to look like when things get rolling when Clemson arrives to Sanford Stadium? Our coverage in this issue touches on players that were on campus this spring, but we shouldn’t forget that a solid, new group arrive in Athens this summer. Be-cause of this, I asked our online recruiting guru, Trent Smallwood to name the top 5 newbies that he sees contributing imme-diately. Here they are with a little insight from Trent.

1) Isaiah McKenzie: McKenzie will con-tribute from day one on special teams. Great speed, very explosive, and almost impossible to tackle in open space.2) Shattle Fenteng: With the loss of Shaq Wig-gins to transfer and Brendan Langley, I see Fenteng contributing early and often for the Bulldogs. He has the speed, length, and plays physical just how Jeremy Pruitt likes his cor-ners.3) Isaiah Wynn: The Bulldogs struggled in the spring at OG. Wynn has a chance to come in and earn immediate playing time. He is an outstanding run blocker and one of the most athletic OG’s coming to UGA in quiet some-time.4) Michel/Chubb: This RB duo coming in is very similar to the Gurley/Marshall duo. I be-

lieve both will see the field in 2014 and make an impact relieving Gurley at times.5) Lorenzo Carter: Carter might not be a full time player early on, but I believe he will make an impact on 3rd down pass rush. Look for Pruitt to have a package with Jen-kins, Carter and Floyd all in the game on 3rd Down pass situations. With that, now I must wrap things up, but I certainly hope you enjoy our Season Preview. And without question, I hope the Redcoat marching band will be playing SUPER LOUD all season long. And who better to lead them, than Chris Conley, who never takes a down off in practice and in games. Finally, what I’ve discussed in this edi-tor’s note, only encompasses half of what is in this tremendous issue. Now, I will throw the ball to Cheri on page 15, so she can tell you about all our social coverage. It’s great stuff. And I encourage you to frequent our website this summer for up to date re-cruiting info. And posts by our awesome sports interns, who we gave off for this issue, so they could wrap up spring se-mester. And last, but certainly not least, a big thank you must go to my high school buddy and graphic artist extraordinaire, Boyd Martin, for his awesome redesign of BI. We’re hoping our new swag will bring great karma to our team and that we all blow the doors off of the 2014 season! Woof, Woof, Woof ...

For a second straight season, Georgia opens with Clemson and South Carolina. Once again, the Bulldogs will know straight out of the gate whether this is a championship caliber season. Last season at Death Valley, Georgia made too many mistakes and the Tigers took advantage

and injuries, the Clemson game set the unfortu-

a red zone breakdown, a dropped interception with a seven point lead and a critical intercep-tion thrown after Clemson fumbled a punt were major contributing factors to the loss. In the series in which Todd Gurley was injured, the Bulldogs offense was stagnant. Clemson has to replace Tajh Boyd and Sammy Watkins from

sack master Vic Beasley on defense. The last two seasons, Clemson has gone 22-4 – los-ing twice each to Florida State and South Carolina. Over that period, the Tigers have beaten Auburn, LSU and Geor-gia. With what Clemson lost and with what Georgia has coming back, if the Bulldogs are going to make the

must-win.

September 13South CarolinaColumbia

Georgia’s Number One coaching nemesis of all time awaits, facing the school he likes to beat the most. What Steve Spurrier has done in Co-lumbia is remarkable. The Gamecocks have pieced together three consecutive 11-2 sea-sons. Over the last four years, South Carolina is 9-3 vs. Florida, Georgia and Tennessee and 4-0 against Clemson, while picking up bowl vic-tories over Michigan, Nebraska and Wisconsin and a 2010 upset of then No. 1 Alabama. The Gamecocks lost Jadaveon Clowney, the top pick in the draft, plus Connor Shaw and Bruce

Gamecocks have recruited well and they have

Florida great, won an ACC title at Duke and has taken South Carolina from the cave to the moon, while skipping several evolution-ary gridiron steps along the way. Spurrier was 11-1 against Georgia at the Florida helm. South Carolina had never beaten Georgia more than twice in a row. He led the Gamecocks to three straight victories over the Bulldogs from 2010-2012, including a 35-7 pounding of Georgia in the last Columbia meeting. Georgia won 41-30 a year ago in Athens. If the Bulldogs make it a 2-0 start and two straight over the Gamecocks, Georgia is a legitimate contender for one of those four coveted spots.

September 20TroySanford Stadium

On Georgia’s run to an 11-2 campaign and No 2 national ranking in 2007, Georgia held off “live dog” Troy in between memorable victo-ries over Florida and Auburn 44-34 to keep a potential and eventual special season en tact.

at that point but this is still a game that the Bull-dogs must be ready for. It is another ‘tweener, as Troy visits Athens between South Carolina and Tennessee. Ideally this is a game in which the No. 2 quarterback and the highly touted un-

Georgia has won four straight in the series over Tennessee, and that is something special in a series that has gone back and forth through the years be-tween these longtime Southeastern Confer-ence powers. The last two years it has b e e n n i p

and tuck. The Bulldogs hung on to take a 51-44 shootout be-tween the hedges in 2012. Last season in overtime, an unwise reach for the end zone gave Georgia an opening and Marshall Morgan drilled one between the uprights towards the Tennessee River for a 34-31 victory. Butch Jones is in his

October 4Vanderbilt Sanford Stadium

Georgia and the rest of the Southeastern Con-ference got good news, while the Big Ten gets a tremble of a scare, with the departure of James Franklin from Vanderbilt to Penn State. The Commodores have gone 9-4 with bowl vic-tories in back to back seasons. They are 15-4 in their last 19 games and in 2013, Vanderbilt beat Georgia, Florida and Tennessee. That’s right, Vandy beat Georgia, Florida and Tennessee (a second straight victory over the Vols) in the same season. Did anyone honestly think they would ever see that? The Commodores also lose one of the most acclaimed wide receivers in SEC annals, second round NFL Draft pick Jor-

dan Matthews. Georgia’s miscues in the kicking game proved costly, as the Commodores tookadvantage to pull the upset in the Music City.Like the prior week’s game with Tennessee, ifthis is to be a championship season, this is a game Georgia must win.

away from home. You would think the sched-ule makers could collaborate somewhat andget two games for all three months (bear withme on the last weekend of August occasion-ally) in most seasons. If Georgia can navigatethis stretch without a blemish, it will be an ac-complishment. Missouri had a dream season, going 12-2 and making it to the SEC Champi-

onship Game. Like too many programs inrecent years, the Tigers got their signa-

ture win over Georgia – downing theDogs 41-26 in Sanford Stadium. The

Tigers have a lot to replace, includ-ing SEC Defensive Player of theYear Michael Sam, quarterback James Franklin and wide receiver Dorial Green-Beckham, who sim-ply could not stay out of trouble. Franklin stand-in Maty Mauck wasoutstanding when Franklin went

down in Athens. The productioncould be even better. Missouri has a

strong offensive line, good backs, andeven without Green-Beckham, talented

and big wide receivers. The biggest areaof concern for Mizzou will be replacing a

lot of defensive talent. The road team is2-0 in the series since Mizzou joined the

How good this feels for Georgia, having won three straight over the Gators in Jacksonville.Hopefully the bowl debacle against Nebraskawon’t jolt the Bulldogs recently found mojo. Inthis three-game winning streak, the highlight was a 17-9 victory in 2012 that was the signature moment in the Bulldogs 12-2 campaign. Florida had won 18 of the previous 21 meetings. is under pressure to have an out-standing year. Sadly, Muschamp’s father, a longtime successful high school coach in the Peach State, recently passed away. Florida has players. The Gators defense, led by sophomore corner sensation Ver-

good. Getting Jeff Driskel back at quarterback is a huge lift for the Gators. When he went down a year ago, Florida’s offense strug-gled mightily. The Gators have a lot of talent at tailback, but the Gators are looking for play-making receivers to emerge. Georgia can maintain control of the series and take a big step towards a berth in

-lege football playoff.

November 8 Kentucky Lexington, Ky.

Two years ago, a Georgia team

Lexington. Last season, the Bull-dogs blew out Kentucky in Ath-ens. The Wildcats have gotten a bumb from Mark Stoops and the recruiting has improved. Georgia had better be ready for this one, and it’s an easy history lesson for bulldogs coach Mark Richt. All he has to do is go back two years for a refresher course. It’s a tweener, book-ended by by ancient rivals Florida and Auburn. The Bull-

Kentucky. Perhaps this is a game where one of one of the Bulldogs freshmen could shine at tailback.

It may sound greedy, but the Bull-dogs would love to get a win here without emptying the tank, as de-fending SEC champion Auburn awaits.

November 15AuburnSanford Stadium

This is the type of thing that could only happen to Georgia. The Bull-dogs have won six of the last eight in the series with Auburn. It’s the south’s oldest continuous rivalry. So which team has twice played for the national championship in that stretch? The team that won only once. Auburn dominated Georgia for three quarters a year ago. Then Georgia controlled the fourth. Then came history and the biggest play in Auburn football annals (remember, the Alabama

-turn for a touchdown, so overtime was on deck), as two dogs tipped the pigskin infamously thrown by former Bulldog Nick Marshall – who was dismissed from Athens – into the hands of Ricardo Louis for an incredibly improbable, his-tory-making fourth-and-18 touch-down. The two years prior, Geor-

and 38-0. Auburn is talented, but must replace a lot of talent, most

back Tre Mason, mammoth offen-sive tackle Greg Robinson, who was the second pick in the draft, and pass rushing specialist Dee Ford. Unfortunately when you look at Auburn’s defensive line, it is

are a lot of Peach state products who were elite recruits, playing the Tigers, picking Auburn to win.

-ures to put up a lot of points and yards. Ideally, this is one where that second straight quarterback should be able to get a wealth of game experience be-tween the hedges. Same goes for those highly touted young backs and young defenders. Georgia should be able to cruise here and turn all attention to the biggest game of them all.

November 29TechSanford Stadium

When looking at Mark Richt’s re-sume, what stands out at the top of his list of accomplishments

straight over the Yellow Jackets

would have been Georgia’s eighth straight in the series, matching the

overtime. Todd Gur-

ing to cause problems. Jer-

emy Pruitt will get

triple option as Georgia’s defensive coordinator. When theoffense gets rolling, it is extreme-

thing to keep in mind with Tech, no matter the score, it is important to keep the offense revved up. Youcan’t score enough against theYellow Jackets with that explosive offense. Perhaps Gurley, who has twice ripped through the Yellow Jackets, will have a monster after-

By Murray Poole Bulldawg Illustrated

A rash broke out around the University of Georgia athletic complex this spring. In fact, the buzz, excitement and anticipation that Bulldogs’ new defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt and his new assistant staff brought to the UGA program has turned into a full-blown epidemic. Putting his defensive charges through an accelerated, rapid-fire pace on the practice field and giving every single player − from the most seasoned senior to the unknown freshman walk-on − the same number of reps and an equal opportunity to win a starting job, Pruitt has indeed invigorated a Georgia defense that struggled mightily at times over the past two seasons. “Coach Pruitt has won a championship (national title last year at Florida State), he’s coached some of the best and that’s the kind of guy you want to play for,” related Georgia senior safety Damian Swann. “And I was very excited to know he was going to be coaching my position. The competition level,” said Swann, “has made it so great for us to get out here and compete and put an impression on these coaches that guys can play. That’s what it’s all about, competing and earning a job.” Swann said the coaching changes on defense has made for an entirely different practice scenario. “The practice schedule is one of the first things we were able to change and do differently,” he said. “There’s just so much energy going on with running back and forth from drill to drill and everybody getting a lot of reps. And that’s what is going to make a lot of guys great, being able to get those reps and not just sitting back and watching the whole practice. Everybody’s doing something,” Swann said. Going at the fast pace from drill to drill also conditions the players better for Game Day, noted Swann. “Absolutely, and I think that’s going to help us in the long run, too,” he declared. We’re going to hit it running and we’re going to get the new guys coming in acclimated to what we’ve got going on and we’re just going to keep it moving.” And this, from two more members of Pruitt’s Bulldog secondary: “Coach Pruitt came in from day one and he meant what he said, that everybody would get their chance, even walk-ons,” said junior cornerback Kennar Johnson, speaking in the week prior to G-Day. “One walk-on (freshman cornerback Aaron Davis) was with the 1’s today so

Coach Pruitt is going to show everybody he’s a man of his word and he’s going to give everybody a shot.” “Coach Pruitt brings a new energy to the field, most definitely,” offered sophomore safety Quincy Mauger. “He talks about rallying up to the ball, there’s no one-man single tackle so he knows the game of football and I’m here to learn.” Mark Richt says the new defensive staff has brought good competition to the Bulldogs’ practices. “It’s always good to have competition, competition for jobs and competition offense vs. defense,” said UGA’s head coach. “It obviously makes each other better. Sometimes you can get into a scheming contest but I don’t see it happening. I see it more of, ‘Let’s hook it up and see who physically wins the day,’ which I think is really healthy for us.” Pruitt, when asked about the buzz he’s brought to the UGA defense, quickly threw all the credit to his new assistant staff. “You look at Coach Rock (Tracy Rocker), you look at Coach (Kevin) Sherrer, you look at Coach Ek (Mike Ekeler) and you watch those guys coach,” Pruitt said. “They’re flying around the field, they’re getting after their guys (and) they’re very demanding so it’s not me, it’s them.” As to the almost daily depth chart changes this past spring, Pruitt said it all hinges on the most recent practice. “We’re trying to give everybody an opportunity,” he said. “The guys that perform the day before are the guys that get to go with the ones the next day. We

have no starters; we have no depth chart, we’re going off of what kind of production you had the day before and this will continue until the freshmen get here. When they get here, they’ll have an opportunity to compete, just like these other guys. And two weeks into fall camp we’ll get them into spots,” Pruitt said. “Maybe there’ll be some guys this spring that kind of take that step, where you say, ‘Hey I know I can count on him.’ But right now we’re a work in progress and won’t have starters until after the last scrimmage of fall camp. The guys who perform the best get the next opportunity. I don’t think the fans of Georgia care who plays – they just want to win.” “Coach Pruitt is a football coach and loves to do what he does,” said new SAM linebacker and Star position coach Sherrer. “He goes out there and he’s passionate about it and I think the players feed off of that because he demands things be done in the right way and certain ways. Sometimes you can interpret that as being a tough coach but it’s actually an enthusiastic, hard-nosed type coach that wants to demand players do it the right way. So again, they feed off of that.” Pruitt said, with spring practice now in the rearview mirror and fall camp looming in August, he knows what he wants the Georgia fan base to see from his defensive unit. “Well, I hope they see us get lined up, I hope they see us play hard every snap and hope we tackle well,” he said. “I hope we play the ball in the deep part of the field. You know, just fundamental things … striking blockers, keeping the ball leveraged.”

Each year, in Georgia’s spring practice, there are young football players stepping up and beginning to attract the coaches’ attention ... making a move on the depth chart and thereby increasing their opportunity to see the field when the games start counting for real in the fall. The Bulldogs’ 2014 spring drills were no different as a number of freshman and sophomore players showed they could be players the fans will love watching in the coming years. Defensively, drawing accolades from his fellow players and the coaching staff all spring was the newest member of the secondary, J.J. Green. Green, the 5-9, 185-pound former two-way standout at Camden County High, has apparently all but nailed down a starting job at the “Star” position in the Bulldogs’ nickel package, which becomes the “Money” spot in new defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt’s dime alignment. Green, as a freshman tailback last season, ran for 384 yards and three touchdowns while also snaring 12 passes for 104 yards while filling in admirably for the injured Todd Gurley and Keith Marshall. He did miss the recent G-Day game after sustaining a sprained ankle. “J.J. Green at the Star position had a good spring,” said Georgia’s new SAM linebacker and Star position coach, Kevin Sherrer. “Of course, he was an offensive player last year. He’s embraced it. He just enjoys playing the game so he goes out there every day to try to get better. He’s got good short-area quickness, he’s able to blitz. He’s able to fit the runs and things like that.” Also on the defensive side of the ball during the recently-completed spring practice, such names as Reggie Carter, Davin Bellamy, Tramel Terry and Aaron Davis kept popping up. Pruitt also lauded sophomore Brendan Langley this spring after Langley got a look at both corner and safety but then, approximately one month after G-Day, head coach Mark Richt revealed that the former Kell High standout was making the move to wide receiver. And, of course, a player who has already made

his mark in the starting defensive lineup but is still a mere sophomore going into this season. That would be outside linebacker Leonard Floyd. “Davin Bellamy (redshirt freshman OLB) is showing some ability,” Pruitt pointed out. “He’s just got to learn to be consistent.” “Tramel Terry is learning,” Pruitt said. “He’s got a really good attitude. He’s working hard. He’s doing what we ask him to do.” Terry, of course, is the highly-touted recruit from South Carolina who sat out his first season in Athens after suffering a torn ACL in his high school all-star game. Sophomore inside linebacker Carter continued to make plays in the spring drills while keeping the Bulldogs’ veteran starters, Ramik Wilson and Amarlo Herrera, on their toes. “Reggie made some plays (in spring’s second scrimmage),” said Wilson. “He got an interception, too. He’s coming along. Yes, he is,” said Wilson, laughing and responding to a

question if Carter is attempting to take his and Herrera’s job. “He’s going to make us better, push us harder and we like the competition.” Aaron Davis, a 6-1, 190-pound redshirt freshman walk-on from Luella High, raised a lot of eyebrows this spring when he moved ahead of scholarship players and ran with the No. 1’s in Pruett’s secondary. Starting at corner in G-Day, Davis had an interception, forced fumble, pass breakup plus three tackles. “Aaron makes good plays on the ball,” said

junior outside linebacker Jordan Jenkins. “He doesn’t bite the fakes and stuff like that. He’s been playing pretty good. He was working hard during mat (drills). I’m glad to see him get some recognition. … I know he worked his butt off this whole spring.” The 6-4, 220-pound Floyd quickly moved into the Bulldogs’ starting lineup as a freshman outside ‘backer and went on to enjoy a most productive first season, with 55 total tackles, 9.5 tackles-for-loss and a team-leading 6.5 sacks. He was named to the SEC All-Freshman Team. “I think Leonard Floyd is just a great player and he’s going to fit into any defensive scheme that you put him in,” head coach Mark Richt said. Among the sophomore and freshman players on the offensive side of the ball that gained attention this spring were redshirt sophomore offensive guard Greg Pyke, sophomore tailback Brendan Douglas, redshirt freshman tailback A.J. Turman, sophomore wide receiver Reggie Davis, redshirt freshman tight end Jordan Davis, redshirt sophomore wideout Kenneth Towns, redshirt sophomore quarterback Faton Bauta, redshirt freshman quarterback Brice Ramsey and true freshman QB Jacob Park. Brendan Douglas, who rambled for 345 yards as a freshman, continued to punish defenders in spring drills and was G-Day’s leading rusher with 40 yards on 10 carries. According to receivers coach Tony Ball, Reggie Davis − arguably the fastest of Georgia’s receivers − has made considerable improvements, in both using that speed and being able to get open. In G-Day, Davis had three catches for 66 yards including a 10-yard TD reception. Quincy Mauger is high on Bauta and Ramsey, who are battling for the No. 2 quarterback job. “Faton Bauta (who passed for 232 yards and ran for 35 in the G-Day game) is hands-down one of the hardest workers at UGA right now,” said Mauger. “He’s in early and out the latest and is always trying to perfect his craft. And Brice Ramsey, he just has an incredible arm, just throwing it very, very deep. And one of the biggest impact players I’ve seen so far is Jacob Park,” said Mauger. “He has the feet on him and has an incredible arm. He has great speed.”

“That’s easy—the health and well-being of my

—the best environment.”

What is Dad’s #1 priority?

Does it seem hard to believe you’re starting your 14th season at Georgia and any projection of how long you’d like to coach?

I’m not changing. I’ve always tried to be obedient to what God is telling me, and I plan on doing it for a while. In some ways it has seemed like 14 years but it has gone quickly. I think the older you get the faster life goes but also you’re measuring your years in seasons and it seems

coaching too, the days are long but the years go fast.

What do you think are the strengths and weaknesses of your 2014 football team?

Our strength has to be everybody’s ability to do it the way the coaches ask them to do it, buying in and giving their best effort. I think if we do that we have a chance to be pretty good. I’m seeing a lot of good progress in that area. You’ve got to establish that every year, I believe. Obviously, our secondary has some growing up to do. They were very young a year ago and very inexperienced a year ago. We’ve got to become more mature in that area. We’ve got a couple of guys who can rush the passer and our linebacker area has got some experience with some productivity to go along with it. But I don’t want anybody to think they are ready made because they’re all learning to do it the way Coach Pruitt and the staff want it done. Every job is kind of up for grabs still so it’s kind of hard to say what the deal is, but we should be in pretty good shape there. D-line, I think we’ve got some answers there if guys come through but their conditioning and their ability to learn what to do (will decide playing time). Running backs, right this minute we’re not deep but if everybody is healthy and everybody’s here it looks like we’ve got some good quality players, good quality depth. O-line, we don’t have all the pieces together but I think we have enough material to get it done. Tight ends I think could be a question mark for us right now. Our receivers, when healthy we’ve got a chance but if we’re not we’re going to have our work cut out for us.

Sometimes it’s hard to compare a team’s attitude and work ethic from one year to the next but what have you seen from this team?

that the coaches are setting. I think they’re really trying and making progress but we’re not there yet. We’ve got a ways to go.

Does Todd Gurley stack up, talent-wise, with some of the great players you’ve coached through the years and what about this Heisman Trophy talk concerning him?

I think if Todd is in great condition and healthy and if he plays with the kind of energy and effort it takes to be a champion I think he’s going to have a great season. And I think if the team wins, he’ll be a candidate. Not many guys win that award unless their team is winning.

How important are the 2014 season openers with Clemson and South Carolina, coming right out of the chute and what do they mean to the Bulldogs’ overall success this season?

a great opponent on national TV and the whole college football world

they’re all important. One game doesn’t make a season. There are

at least won their division over the years so it’s not life or death but, it feels like it is. I do think it will be good to have the open date between

any opponent, it’s a positive thing.

Page 10: Season preview, 2014

10 • Bulldawg Illustrated

I not only went out on

the proverbial limb

the past two football

seasons in my annual

predictions concerning the

Georgia Bulldogs but, I

went a little crazy as well.

For in both our 2012 and 2013 Bull-

dawg Illustrated season preview issues, I

firmly stated that Mark Richt’s football

team would make it to the BCS National

Championship game. Truth be told, season

before last, that prediction wasn’t that far off

.... five yards to be exact. That was the five

yards the Bulldogs couldn’t negotiate in the

SEC championship game against Alabama.

The painful 32-28 loss to the Crimson Tide

in the Georgia Dome sent ‘Bama, rather

than Georgia, on to rout an outmanned

Notre Dame team in the title game at South

Beach.

But when I also opined that the 2013

Bulldogs would make it back to the Georgia

Dome, win the SEC crown by this time

whipping Alabama and earning a trip to the

BCS championship game at Pasadena’s Rose

Bowl, boy, was I a million miles off with

that prediction.

As we all know, last year’s Georgia team

not only failed to make it to Atlanta for a

third consecutive season but the 2013 Bull-

dogs also stumbled to an 8-5 record which

included a disappointing loss to Nebraska in

the Jan. 1 Gator Bowl. But again, who could

have envisioned Georgia being decimated

by injuries like it was .... Malcolm Mitchell,

Keith Marshall, Justin Scott-Wesley and Jay

Rome being lost for the season at different

junctures of the schedule and Todd Gurley,

Michael Bennett, Chris Conley and, at the

end, Aaron Murray also having to sit out

key contests. Likewise, who could have fore-

seen the 2013 Bulldog defense struggling

mightily, like it did nearly the season long?

So now, as Georgia looks to the summer

workouts, preseason camp in August and

then the arrival of the 2014 campaign −

which will be kicked off Aug. 30 when the

Clemson Tigers prowl between the hedges

− I’m going to quickly make it clear that this

writer isn’t about to forecast another nation-

al championship game appearance for the

Bulldogs. For one thing, we’re finally rid of

the BCS and about to enter a long-awaited

collegiate playoff, something many college

football fans have been anticipating for a

number of years now. Although this first

NCAA playoff season won’t include but

four teams, at least it’s the start of us finally

deciding a real champion on the field itself,

as is the case in all of the other collegiate

sports.

So, for the Bulldogs to even think na-

tional championship, they would first have

to be chosen as one of the four teams in

the playoff setup. Then, of course, Georgia

would have to win two consecutive games to

clinch its first national crown since way back

in 1980.

But, all that said, I do see Richt’s 2014

Dawgs − assuming they avoid the cata-

strophic injuries of last fall − climbing back

to the SEC Championship Game after last

year’s absence. Then, what the Bulldogs do

from that date on, well, is your guess as well

as mine.

Here though, as we go game-by-game of the ‘14 schedule, is how Georgia will recapture the SEC East.

Here we go, Georgia meeting the potent Tigers right out of the season gate while at-tempting to avenge last year’s 38-35 setback at Death Valley. Clemson, with its entire defensive front return-ing, including All-American Vic Beas-ley, looks formidable again on defense but what about the offense, which lost All-Americans Tajh Boyd and Sammy Watkins as well as leading rusher Rod-erick McDowell.? In a lower-scoring game than last year’s battle, the Bull-dogs repay the Tigers by 24-17.

After having a much-needed open date following the hard-fought win over Clemson, Georgia heads for Colum-bia and the initial big SEC counter with the Gamecocks. South Carolina graduated quarterback Connor Shaw and of course lost defensive behe-moth Jadeveon Clowney to the NFL but Steve Spurrier still returns eight offensive starters and six defensive regulars from last year’s 11-win team. At Williams Brice, I have to rate the ‘Cocks a slight favorite to handle Jer-emy Pruitt’s rebuilt UGA defense. In a close one, Carolina avenges last year’s lost to the Dogs with a 31-28 triumph.

Bulldogs return to Athens and bounce back mightily from the loss to SC, by 42-17.

-teers, entering their second season under Butch Jones, should be much

but not enough to stop the Bulldogs at home. Dogs roll UT, 38-21.

Third straight game between the hedges as Georgia faces a Commodore team no longer under James Franklin (now at Penn State) but Derek Mason. Now, can the new Vandy boss continue the success Franklin enjoyed in Nashville? Not right off, I’d say. Dogs smash Dores, 41-21.

I earlier thought this might turn into Georgia’s second straight loss to the Tigers but with the defending SEC East champs losing such stalwarts as James Franklin, Mar-cus Lucas, Michael Sam, Kony Ealy, E.J. Gaines and Dorial Green-Beckham (for now, anyway), Missouri simply can’t be as strong as it was in 2013. Georgia gets it done in the other Co-lumbia, say by 28-21.

Heading west for a second straight week, the Bull-dogs will likely have their hands full with Bret Bielema’s second Hogs edi-

there’s supposed to be a rejuvenation of sorts in Fayetteville this autumn. The Dogs have a mild letdown here but still win, 24-17.

Will the Bulldogs be able to push their win string against the hated Gators

his coaching life in Gainesville after

another potent defense but will the Florida offense make the improve-ment it needs under new coordinator Kurt Roper? .... Not enough to mas-ter a Georgia defense that should be peaking under Pruitt about this time. The Bulldogs do bark to their fourth straight win over the Gators, by 31-21.

after the win over Florida, the Bull-dogs as they’ve done numerous times in Lexington - stumble a bit and fall behind the upset-minded Cats. But then Hutson Mason, Todd Gurley and the Bulldogs come alive after halftime and declaw the Wildcats by 44-24.

After two consec-

has the Tigers back between the hedg-es and, without question, the Bulldogs will be primed sky-high to avenge the

loss last season to the eventual SEC champs. Auburn lost record-breaking tailback Tre Mason and other stand-outs on both sides of the ball from the team that won 12 games and lost to

-onship but with eight offensive regu-lars - including multi-talented QB Nick Marshall - and seven defensive starters back, the Tigers are bound to be very explosive once again. I want to call it Georgia in this one but thinking that Auburn will be pumped to show the miracle win over the Dogs last season

the Tigers get a slight nod, by 35-31.

Snooze control here as Dogs snap back and rip the Buccaneers, 52-14.

We all know Mark Richt simply owns the state rival Jackets. The UGA coach is going for the 13th win over Tech, in 14 seasons in Athens. He’ll get it, this time by 38-24.

So, there you have it - the Bulldogs pro-jecting to go 10-2 during the regular season of 2014, with the only setbacks being at South Carolina and at home vs. Auburn. But, here’s the thing: Those two defeats won’t derail Georgia’s chances of making it back to the SEC title game. That’s because I see South Carolina, Missouri and Florida all dropping at least two games each in East Division counters this coming fall. All that said, how does a Georgia-Auburn rematch in early December in the Georgia Dome sound to you? Or would you rather have a 2012 SEC title game rematch with Georgia vs. ‘Bama? I’m really thinking one of these scenarios will become reality in this much-anticipated 2014 football season.

By Murray Poole Bulldawg Illustrated

Take a look back on the national championship teams of recent years. A huge reason why the Alabama Crimson Tide and Florida State Seminoles were able to bring the BCS Championship Trophy to their respective campuses is because they were football teams that did the little things right. Superb execution on both offense and defense, great efficiency in the kicking game and the other special team areas, all of that came into play for those two teams who ascended to the top of the college football world. There’s no question Georgia head coach Mark Richt and his assistant coaching staff have hammered the concept of doing the little things right, of going over every minute detail of the game, into the heads of their players but, for some reason, the Bulldogs of 2013 weren’t able to transfer those teachings from the practice field to the games itself. As evident by shoddy special teams play and other team breakdowns while finishing 8-5. Thus, it goes without saying, if Georgia is to once again reach the Southeastern Conference championship game this coming autumn and then become a participant in the first-ever collegiate national playoff, the

2014 Bulldogs are going to have to prove they can be in sync in all phases of the game, not only on the Woodruff Practice Fields but when the folks are in the stands at Sanford Stadium and the opponents’ stadiums the team will visit. “It’s true in all areas,” said Richt. “That’s why Game 1 is a little more anxiety, anticipation and curiosity of what’s going to happen with your team because you just don’t know how they’re going to react under that type of stress, that type of pressure and that type of … whatever you want to call it. “It’s the moment of truth and the time when it truly counts,” Richt said. “You can get DBs out there covering everybody and jumping routes and getting a pick every once in a while and celebrating, but they know in practice if a guy runs by them and catches the ball it’s not that big of a deal – it’s a big deal but it’s not as big a deal as when it happens on national TV. So that’s why you’ve got to develop those habits in practice. You can’t be reckless in practice and then say all of a sudden in the game, ‘I’m going to be more disciplined.’ You’ve got to do it in practice every day.” Richt said the players who master the little things in practice and perform exceptionally well but then play the exact opposite on Game Day, is something the

coaches can’t really ever get a

handle on.

“Some guys quite frankly

freeze up a little bit mentally

and if you think about it, it’s not

easy to go out there in front of

everybody and do it and do it

at the pace it’s got to be done,”

he said. “There’s no such thing

as a gamer because if you think

you’re a gamer but you’re not a

practicer, we’ll never find out if

you’re a gamer. You got to do it in

practice.”

“You know what,” offered Georgia tight ends coach and offensive special teams coordinator John Lilly, “there’s always a coach I respected a lot when I first got in this thing. He always

talked about when you get in the stadium everybody is subject to the quote, unquote ‘choke factor.’ ... and it’s just different when you get in a big stadium.”

Georgia’s new inside linebackers coach and defensive special teams coordinator, Mike Ekeler, knows what he wants to see from his players this coming season. “I want to see effort, I want to see execution,” Ekeler said. “I want them to take what we’re teaching them in the classroom and apply it all on the field. And I want to see leadership. I want to see the whole package. I want to coach guys with passion, guys who want to get better and want to be great. When they look at the film, I want them to be critical of themselves.” The little things − if the Georgia players can carry the basic fundamentals and detailed concepts of the game they’ve mastered in practice into the arena itself, when the fans are filing in and the bands are playing, everything about the Bulldogs’ approaching 2014 season could be good.

He’s unquestionably one of the very top running backs in the collegiate football world entering the 2014 season. And, barring the injuries that forced him to miss three Georgia games and parts of others last season, the Bulldogs’ junior tailback, Todd Gurley, should find himself right in the thick of things in the race for the coveted Heisman Trophy and first-team All-America honors. That said, the question is this: With senior Hutson Mason beginning his first season as Georgia’s full-time starting quarterback, should the Bulldogs lean on Gurley early and often to carry the offensive load, thereby allowing Mason to develop at his own pace without having to try to win the games with his passing arm?The answer to this, according to head coach Mark Richt, offensive coordinator Mike Bobo and running backs coach Bryan McClendon, is an emphatic “No.” They say the Bulldogs’ game plan will always include a balanced attack and, good as Todd Gurley is, if Mason and the other Georgia quarterbacks aren’t throwing the ball efficiently, the defenses of today will shut down your run game in a heartbeat. “We’ve got to have balance,” said Bobo, who watched his star back run for 1,385 yards and 17 touchdowns in a splendid freshman season and then still 989 yards and 10 touchdowns last season, despite missing all that playing time in 2013 due to an ankle injury. “The days of just turning around and handing it to a guy 40 times, you don’t see that anymore,” Bobo said. “You’ve got to have balance. The defenses are too good, they do too much and if we’re just relying on Todd to win every game for us, we’re going to be in trouble. We’ve got to do a better job in the passing game, we’ve got to continue to develop depth with the backs that are here and the backs we’ve signed. We’ve just got to get better in a lot of areas. We have a long way to go to from what I think we’re going to do in the fall against Clemson because right now, we’re kind of struggling to execute.” Richt emphasized that in Georgia’s pro set offense, which relies heavily on play-action, it’s essential the Bulldogs have a potent passing game to complement the running attack. “You hope for balance because if you can’t throw worth a lick, your quarterback had better be a dynamic runner,” he said. “You better be running triple-option football or running the ball like Auburn does with a QB who can really run. If your QB can’t run and be like a running back, then the defense can outnumber you in the running game. And when they do that,” said Richt, “you’re going to be pounding your head against the wall unless you can make them pay with play-action passes and a guy who can put the ball on the money and receivers that can make plays and get open and beat man coverage and

things like that. So that’s why you’ve got to have balance because if they ever load you, you better be able to throw and if they say, ‘we’ve got to stop the pass’ then you better be able to run it. And again, if you say ‘we’re gonna run the ball, no matter what,’ the teams that are running the ball for a lot of yards no matter what and are rarely throwing it are triple-option football teams just like Auburn with a lot of QB runs. “Our QBs are dependent on backs that can run and receivers, tight ends that can run routes and catch the ball. But when you do it right it’s pretty darn good,” Richt said. Gurley’s position coach, Bryan McClendon, heartily concurs with Richt and Bobo on the Bulldogs fielding a balanced offense. “I think to be honest with you we’re still going to have to make a point to be balanced,” McClendon said. “I think it’s kind of hard to do one (running or passing) over the other, to be honest with you, and people not kind of try to make you plan to your weakness, so to speak. So I think it’s got to be a focus of ours to try to be good at both, no matter how many times Todd gets the ball.” Gurley, himself, is aware what a strong, Mason-led passing game can mean for his success in the upcoming season. In fact, he doesn’t want to be a one-man show back there, carrying the ball 30 times or more like the Bulldogs’ all-time greatest tailback once did. “I ain’t trying to carry the ball no 30 times,” Gurley smiled, slowly shaking his head. “That might be like three or four times, at that, during the season but just balance it out, man. Get in the passing game and all. If we can get that running game going on then we can start passing the ball and that would be a lot of pressure off of me. Twenty times now, that’ s cool.”Gurley knows, however, that his teammates will be depending heavily on him this season, both with his powerful runs and his stepped-up leadership, on and off the field. “Yeah man, it’s an exciting year,” he said. “We’ve got basically everybody back and it’s exciting, even for the defense because everybody is so pumped up with the new coaching staff. Everybody just wants to compete harder. If I’m competing hard, it’s not going to do anything but make those guys better,” Gurley said. “We’re just tired of being mediocre, just going to SEC Championship games, going to a bowl game and losing. We’re trying to start something new. “I’ve had talks with coaches,” he said. “Me and coach Richt and B-Mac. They just want me to go out there and practice hard and give it my all. Just don’t cut myself short. Just try to get better.” Bobo has seen renewed leadership from Gurley in the way he’s gone about his daily practice habits. “Todd has done a good job,” Bobo said. “He’s been practicing like a great

player should. When he practices hard, it does a lot for our football team. It shows leadership and he’s been doing a really good job of that this spring. He wants to be one of the best players in the country and we want to be one of the best teams in the country, and for that we need him to be at his best. He can’t do that without practicing and I’m proud of him. “For the most part,” added Bobo, “he’s more of a leader by example but Todd does good when he’s excited and riled up and I actually heard him encouraging some guys (in spring drills), which was good. But when he practices 100 percent and gives it his all, that really speaks for itself. So that’s what we’re trying to get out of him and that’s what he wants to try to do. He battled a little fatigue issues a little bit early in camp just because he didn’t have an off-season and he’s fighting through that. But if he’ll continue to work, he’ll get where he wants to go and we’ll get where we want to go.” Georgia senior inside linebacker Ramik Wilson, an All-SEC first-team selection last season, perhaps summed it up best when talking about the ability of Todd Gurley. “He’s the best running back in the nation,” said Wilson.”You can’t really hold him back for that long. He’s a big boy. He’s probably about 240 and about the fastest person on the field right now. He’s hard to match up with.” As expected, Gurley was used sparingly in the recent G-Day game but he still ran for 32 yards and a touchdown on six carries while also catching three passes for 38 more yards. You can bet his touches will go up considerably when the Clemson Tigers come calling on Aug. 30 although, as both Bobo and Gurley emphasized, No. 3 won’t be carrying the ball some 30 to 35 times. But how does 22 totes for 165 yards sound to you? Enough to make the Bulldogs a winner, I’d say.

I am really excited to bring a spotlight on the Women of UGA through a new series featuring Q&As with University graduates, Georgia fans’ tailgate recipes and you know I can’t resist sharing some red & black fashion ... it’s all part of the lifestyle of being a Bulldog belle.

O F F T H E F I E L D Vance threw me the ball and I can catch this one easily ... it’s about socializing. Bulldawg Illustrated has always been part sports and part social — the fanfare and lifestyle of being a Bulldog. But we are taking it up a notch this season. We know how much you love the photos and faces of the Bulldawg nation so we will be doing more and more to show off the fans. Our opening kickoff is with our series of Coast2ClassicCity Characters in this issue. What better way to show off some of our favorite businesses in the Golden Isles and Athens than to let the owners show off their personalities. So we have some folks giving you their Top 5 such as ... Southern Soul owners Harrison Sapp and Griffin Bufkin share their Top 5 dining destinations across Southeast Coastal Georgia (yes, yum!) — Petite Maison’s chic owner Julie Singleton Willis shares her Top 5 picks this summer — The Yellow Canary owner Sandra Delaney’s daughter that is headed to UGA next year as a freshman tells the Top 5 things she will bring from the shop — restaurateur Chris Lloyd shares the Top 5 reasons he opened Marker 7 on a corner of Five Points Athens — Rusty Heery gives the Top 5 fashion trends for summer from his beloved Athens institution of style Heery’s Clothes Closet. You will enjoy them all on the following pages. Let’s get ready for the 2014 season. We will continue to have tons of photo pages from University of Georgia events and we hope to score big with you by having more and more fan coverage. Go Dawgs - Sic’Em! Woof, Woof. Can’t wait.

reasons to be pumped about UGA’s 2014 season

Returning to Athens for “Saturday between the hedges” and tailgating on Lumpkin Street for 40 years with family, friends and others. Eating and drinking our favorite tailgate food and beverages. Cheering the team as they bus down Lumpkin to the “Dawg” Walk. If playing Clemson and tailgat-ing on opening day won’t pump you up, nothing will. Watching our Heisman trophy candidate, Todd Gurley, leading our potent scoring machine on offense along with a new quarterback throwing to a talented crowd of receivers in Kris Durham, Chris Conley and Malcolm Mitchell should again make us an offensive powerhouse. New Defensive Coordinator Jeremy Pruitt and staff have inherited a battle tested but young defense. That excuse is now over and this defense must regroup and bring back the enthusiasm to the game and regain the distinction of being known as the “Junkyard Dawgs.” 40 years celebrating the Georgia-Florida game with fans, friends, alumni at Maggie’s, the Lady Dawgs Headquarters on St. Simons Island. All week prior to the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party in Jacksonville on Nov. 1st, fans

practice and what better place to be in the Golden Isles and shopping at Maggie’s Boutique.

reasons to choose Athens as your home

Living in Athens is like “a step back in time.” Whether with a family, single, newlywed or retiring, Athens retains much of the character of an older quaint Southern town…sidewalks, children walking to school, and neighborhood shopping. Athens is consistently quoted as one of the most desirable places to live in Georgia. Every day is different…an electric atmosphere permeates Athens with a broad range of events almost every day in our Classic City: cultural, musical, athletic—there’s no excuse for boredom. Music feeds the soul, and Athens has plenty of it to offer, including “tried-and-true” favorites as well as fresh local artists from all around the south…from a picnic at the Terrapin Brewery to watching the Red Coat Band practice to enjoying Widespread Panic’s revisit to the Georgia Theatre. Excellent schools, both public and private, and

Georgia, make Athens a great place for educational opportunities for all ages. Athens is a CLASSIC, your home should be too! Whether you prefer suburban subdivisions, mid century modern, or classic downtown neigh-borhoods, Athens offers architecture of all ages and types. From historic neoclassical and

reasons fall can’t get here fast enough

Reign’s

Early fall in Athens, Ga...there’s nothing like the vibe of downtown on game weekends. Undergrads, alums, and the rest of the DawgNation descend on America’s best college town! Road Trips! Following the Dawgs into the heart of the lion spikes the adrenaline for us die hards. You’re never alone in a small sea of red in the SEC! Family and Friends reunite to tailgate. At every home game someone asks me, “Reign, what’s it like to be around Athens full-time?” and I respond, “It’s frickin’ awesome!” On average, at least one or two people I know move back to Athens each year or at least buy a weekend getaway place to take in all that there is to do around here.Win the Clemson game. My wife grew up in Clemson and my in-laws still live there. It’s been a tough year. Enough said. My awesome daughter, Gabby, starts high school! Wow, that makes me feel old, but I’m a proud papa nonetheless!

TIPS for Gameday Dressing

Dress to impress! - Here in the Classic City, the game day dress code calls for a little more than a t-shirt, so thrown on your Saturday best! We love wide-leg print pants paired with a tunic or even a sundress and sandals! Don’t be afraid of all black...with a little red. - There’s nothing more chic than all black—especially with Georgia red for game day. The best part is, your classic all-black pieces can be worn any other day of the week too. Dress for style AND comfort. - Remember that game day in Athens is a marathon, not a sprint—it’s an all-day thing. That means wearing shoes you can walk in (like our comfortable but stylish Gentle Souls) and comfy-chic clothes like our favorite Sympli jersey knits! Never, ever wear the opposing team’s colors. - You never want to end up on the wrong side of the hedges! Last but not least...accessories, accessories, accessories!!make it, and you’re never game-ready until you’ve got on your best Georgia jewels! So stop by Sonia Says on your way to Sanford Stadium because we’ve got all your game day goodies!

ingredients I like to use

Jeff Brzezinski’s

Seafood - Freshly caught grouper, Georgia white shrimp, oysters, scallops and crab are on our menu nightly and I prepare them piccata, scampi, berardi, grilled, fried, meuniere and parmesan crusted. Risotto - I love coming up with new twists on this Italian rice dish…imagine a wild mushroom and parmesan cream risotto or a roasted red pepper and andouille sausage risotto. Chocolate - Our toasted coconut chocolate silk pie is a house hit but I even drizzle chocolate cognac sauce on our pecan pie. And we have a few chocolate martinis on the menu. Lemons - I use them to bring out

dishes. They work so well with seafood and added to butter and wine creates a beautiful sauce. Cheeses - One of our popular appetizers is the baked feta with toast points topped with an olive tapenade and balsamic reduction. I make a mean swiss cheddar mornay for our seafood gratin. Parmesan. Blue Cheese. Flavorful cheeses are used throughout our menu.

University of Georgia Graduates

Coming from South Georgia, I particularly

loved experiencing four seasons.

Current Town: Thomasville, GA

Years at UGA: 1990-95

Family: Mom of two boys, wife

Profession: “jill” of trades!

Describe Athens in three words:Diverse, Accepting,

Creative

Share a favorite memory from your time at UGA: Wow, too many wonderful memories… I loved going to the Student Union and watching movies. Profes-sor Jim Herbert was a fixture there, and so was I. The Georgia Museum of Art was/is a treasure too. Coming from South Georgia, I par-ticularly loved experiencing four seasons. Fall and spring in Athens on your mountain bike are tough to beat.

Band you heard while living in Athens:The Jody Grind, Chickesaw Mudpuppies, Opal Foxx Quartet, Daisy, and Down-right!

A favorite shop in Athens: On Memory Lane, it was the original Frontier by Nancy Lendved on Jackson by Toppers (a strip joint). Currently, I love my friend Kristen Bach’s Treehouse. It just makes you smile when you are in there.

A favorite Athensrestaurant:Well, back in the day… I was very partial to the Old Bluebird in the Old Morton Theatre, as I “gophered” and then wait-ed tables. Gary was an amazing cook. She made this barbecue shrimp with black beans on a bed of brown rice topped off with honey jalapeño sauce

that was seriously amazing. Bulldog Tofu was also a favorite!

Now, Athens has so many top restaurants, but this past summer Peter Dale blew me away at The National. I could eat him up too. I am dying to try Chef Whit-ney’s new digs with Hugh at Cinco y Diez. She was our first chef featured at our Shotgun Supper Club at Pebble Hill Plantation. It was like watching an artist work; The evening and her food were magical. I think Mimi over at Home-made is doing some bright food too and I am looking forward to working with her this spring for a wedding event that I am doing. Just FYI, this was the first question that I answered, as I am a fan of

food and Athens delivers.

One thing few people know about you: That I would love to be on Wheel of Fortune! Seriously, I would.

Describe your typical Bulldog game day:I can count on one hand how many games I have been to. Sorry, I was an art major. Curiously enough though, I enjoyed Bulldog Basketball and would buy student season tickets to that. Now I live in a household of boys, who LOVE football so payback for my college apathy. Of course, I will bark like a DAWG, if the spirit

moves me.

Even “Island Time” stops at game time – every bar, restaurant, hotel lobby, car radio and home television on St. Simons Island is tuned to the Dawgs. The McGladrey Classic – during UGA’s second bye week on October 25, St. Simons Island will be hosting a PGA TOUR event. The annual event is held at the beautiful Seaside Course and historically has perfect weather. Fill the football void with golf! The weather – after long, hot summers, fall temperatures are ideal on the Island. Paired with an ocean breeze, you simply cannot beat the weather in September, October and November. This is Dawg Country – 285 miles separate St. Simons Island from Athens. But make no mistake, the Island is Dawg Country. Though Gainesville is 100 miles closer, you won’t see a Gator hat in these parts. Georgia/Florida – need I say more?
