Kwanzaa is celebrated from December 26 to January 1. We

dress in special clothes, decorate our homes with fruits and vegetables, and light a candleholder called a kinara.-Susan (Uganda)

Each year on the fourth Thursday in November,

Americans gather for a day of feasting, football and family. There is usually roast turkey with gravy, stuffing, mashed potatoes, green beans, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie on Thanksgiving dinner.

Christmas is a time for joy with family and friends over a

big dinner and sharing good thoughts and exchanging gifts with each other and watching the little ones open their gifts with high expectations. Then when it’s all over say your blessings and go home with a full stomach and lots of leftovers and happy memories. - David R

Santa in Different Countries

Pere Noel - France. This is also his name in

Belgium

Santa No Ojisan - Japan [Uncle Santa]

Nino Jesus - Costa Rica. He

is also referred to Nino Jesus in Columbia and parts of Mexico as well.

Father Christmas - England. In Victorian times, Father

Christmas wore a green suit, not the red of today.

Ded Moroz - Russia [Grandfather Frost]Papai Noel - Brazil [Father Christmas] Julenissen - Norway [Christmas Gnome]Gwiazdor - Poland [Star Man]

Viejo Pascuero - Chile [Old Man Christmas]Jultomten - Sweden [Christmas Brownie]

The Feast of the Epiphany (January 6th) was also celebrated

in some towns in Ireland as ‘Nollaig na mBean’ or Women’s Christmas. Traditionally the women got the day off and the men do the housework and cooking! The women met in each other’s homes to sew and chat.

Christmas in Mexico is a festive time. Families sing Christmas carols

and create “Nacimiento” or Nativity scene in their home. On December 24th, “El Nino Dios” or Baby Jesus is passed to everyone to kiss before putting him on the Nativity scene.- Ricardo R (Mexico)

Christmas was a special holiday with family. We

always had a live tree. We would go out in the woods and cut it down ourselves. For dinner we would have turkey. Uncle Howard would ship us a turkey and my Dad would slaughter it and mom would prepare it. Mom would always make a sour cream and raisin pie for Dad. - Carolyn B

When visiting my German Grandma around the holiday,

they would sprinkle sugar on lettuce and role it out like a cigar to eat. -Mabel L (Germany)

We have traditional holiday celebrations with food and

presents, but we celebrate Boxing Day following Christmas. This is to give gifts to the service people in our lives, such as postman, delivery person, tradesman and servants.- Bert & Mary W (South Wales)

Italians love their chestnuts; roasting them, boiling them,

pureeing them to use in sweets. Our family would boil Castanea (Chestnuts). They were supposed to come out white and fluffy but most of them ended up rotten.- Virginia V (Italy)

For eight days we light a special candleholder called a menorah.

Children play a Hanukkah game with a spinning top called a dreidel.-Rachel (Israel)

Girls dress up as “Lucia brides” in long white gowns

with red sashes, and a wreath of burning candles on their heads on December 13th, St. Lucia Day. -Elsa (Sweden)

The Philippines has the longest Christmas season in the

world - from September to January. It is marked by traditional masses, light displays and family gatherings. Paper and bamboo lanterns known as ‘parols’ light up the homes. Christmas Eve, or Noche Buena, is when families come together to host a large festive meal that includes Filipino-Style Ham among others.

Fi l ipino-Style Pineapple Glazed Hol iday Ham Ingredients

1 (about 7 to 8 pounds) fully •cooked, bone-in ham6 cups pineapple juice•3 cups Sprite or 7-up•2 cups dark beer•1 cup brown sugar•2 tablespoons salt•20 to 30 whole cloves•

For the Pineapple Glaze2 cups poaching liquid (from •boiling the ham)¾ cup brown sugar•¼ cup yellow mustard•1 cup crushed pineapple•

Instruct ionsIn a deep pot, combine pineapple juice, beer, Sprite, sugar and salt. Stir until dissolved. Add ham and about 6 to 8 pieces of the cloves, making sure ham is fully submerged in the liquid. Over medium heat, bring to a boil. Cover, lower heat and continue to cook for about 1 hour. Allow to slightly cool and refrigerate overnight.Drain ham, reserving about 2 cups of the poaching liquid. Allow meat to stand for about 1 hour or until it reaches room temperature. With a knife, score the surface fat in a diamond pattern at about ¼-inch deep and 1-inch apart. Place cloves at the intersection points of the cuts to form a nice pattern around the top and sides of ham. With a pastry brush, liberally brush ham with ¾ of the pineapple glaze. Arrange ham in a roasting rack and bake in a 325 F oven for about 1 hour to 1-1/2 hours or until internal temperature reaches 140 F. While baking, continue to baste ham every 15 to 20 minutes with the remaining glaze. At the last 5 minutes of cooking, increase temperature to 400 F and bake until nicely browned.Remove from oven and brush liberally with the pan juices. Cover with foil and let rest for about 10 to 15 minutes before slicing.

For the Pineapple GlazeIn a sauce pan over medium heat, combine reserved poaching liquid, sugar, mustard and crushed pineapples. Stir until sugar is dissolved. Cook, stirring occasionally, until liquid is reduced and thickened.

November is American Diabetes Month

Diabetes is one of the leading causes of disability and death in the United States. One in 11 Americans have diabetes — that’s more than 29 million people. And another 86 million adults in the United States are at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

To raise awareness about diabetes and healthy living, Caring Hands is proudly participating in American Diabetes Month. In Illinois, approximately 800,000 people 18 years of age and older have diagnosed diabetes, with another 500,000 people who are not aware that they have the disease.

If you are overweight, have high blood pressure, or are age 45 or older, you are at higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes. The good news is that making healthy changes can greatly lower your risk. To help prevent type 2 diabetes:

Watch your weight•Eat healthy•Get more physical activity•

Stress Bust ing Tips For Caregivers* When a loved one is sick, caregivers are often so busy providing care that they forget to take care of themselves! Consider the tips below, and take care of yourself! If you’re feeling exhausted or overwhelmed, call us and ask about our caregiver respite services. When you need a rest, we’re here to help!

VolunteerThis may seem counter-intuitive when you are already doing so much to help your family member. But keep in mind that helping out in other ways can be very gratifying and therapeutic. Barry J. Jacobs, Psy.D., author of The Emotional Survival Guide for Caregivers says: “One woman told me she volunteers weekly at an animal shelter because the pets are so responsive.” Plus, volunteers live longer than nonvolunteers, a University of Michigan study found last year.

Improve Your Sleep HabitsDisrupted sleep saps your energy for dealing with the demands of caregiving, says Cleveland Clinic geriatrician Ronan Factora, M.D. Brain scans of sleep-deprived patients in the University of California, Berkeley’s sleep lab also found that brain measures of anxiety shot up by more than 60 percent in those who were the most fatigued. So adopt good sleep habits – a dark room, fewer distractions in the bedroom – for more restful sleep.
