As hunter-gatherers, early human beings covered long distances

each day to search for food. It was only when humans started

to become more sedentary that the history of the seat as we

know it today began. People began to submit to a spiritual

leader – a "king", the only member of the community who no

longer had to find sustenance by means of his own physical

exertion but was looked after by the community. He was the only

one allowed to sit on a chair-like object as a sign of his power –

this object was the throne. It is the symbol of the renunciation

of physical activity in favour of seated, intellectual work within

a limited area.

The importance of sitting as we now know it was shaped by

Christianity, as church elders and bishops won the right to

rule and also adopted a seated position. Af ter them, priests

and monks were given the right to sit, followed by influential

citizens and the leaders of guilds and trade associations.

The development of seating was then influenced by two civil

revolutions in Europe – the Reformation in 1517 and the French

Revolution in 1789. Af ter the Reformation, the chair forced

its way out of the palaces and churches into the houses of

noblemen and the upper classes – sitting down therefore

finally became established as a posture for all people. It then

came to represent the station of a person and fur thered the

to explore their surroundings, their upright posture became the key feature of moving from A to B. After many thousands of years of

evolution, we raised our heads, lifted our arms off the ground and straightened our knees in order to finally be able to stride through

the world in an upright position. It then only took 200 years of sitting to force half of the human race back into a bent posture.

development of merchants and retailers, whose work increasingly

involved administrative and planning tasks. The concentrated,

stationary posture integrates thinking and acting into logical

and targeted sequences. As soon as you start school you are

required to sit still in order to make progress with other things –

with reading, writing and thinking.

Today, the car is a very convenient way to shorten the distance

between two seats. You no longer have to abandon your seated

position in order to get from one place to another. Modern

people are viewed as mobile – but actually they hardly ever go

by foot but carry out their work and spend their leisure time in

a seated position. Sitting is an indication of what we today call

"quality of life".

Therefore a modern vehicle seat has to be more than just a

chair on a moveable mount. A car seat is an incisive symbol

of modern society and has an influence on how the people in

the car act, think , feel and behave. The ancient throne has

developed into a modern, high-tech seat.

What exactly makes a car seat a genuine RECARO, a modern, high-tech seat? It is the experience gained over more than 100 years

of company history, the knowledge, the technology and the special philosophy integrated into every RECARO. Our products may

be more exclusive and expensive than others, but in the design and manufacturing process we will not make economies that can

affect safety, ergonomics and the comfort of the seat. Therefore, sitting in a genuine RECARO is a very special feeling.

Due to our company history which stretches back more than

100 years, we know how to make sitting in a vehicle a pleasant

experience. The evolution of our company is just as unique as

the development of seating itself.

It all began in the year 1906 with the production of car bodies.

Af ter successful years as a producer of vehicle bodies – did you

know that Reutter produced the first bodies for the Volkswagen

(later VW Beetle) and the Porsche 356? – RECARO specialised

in the development and production of vehicle seats from 1963

onwards. Above all, it is the special innovative spirit, the out-

standing creativity and the of ten quoted aim "We want to be

better" from the company's founder, Wilhelm Reutter, that

stil l prevail in the company and that have made RECARO the

premium brand that it is today.

Safety, ergonomics, design, comfort and quality – these are

the keywords that we emphasised in the specifications for our

designers, draughtsmen and engineers. Considering current

ecological issues, feel-good factors and a deeply-rooted ethical

responsibil i ty, products have been created that are second to

none. They are packed with state-of-the-ar t technology such

as the weight-saving hybrid construction principle*, which

decreases the total weight of the vehicle and therefore reduces

emissions. All products comply with the extremely stringent

requirements that renowned vehicle manufacturers have to fulfil.

Our knowledge is learnt through our "non-road" divisions – you

have no doubt already sat in a RECARO airline passenger seat –

and our genuine craf tsmanship is coupled with top quality

materials.

We have adopted nature as our role model, thus we always

ensure efficiency and sustainability, as well as production which

is based on strict ecological considerations in order to provide

future-proof mobility. All this is integrated into a RECARO.

AN AUTOMOTIVE HISTORY

Reutter builds a Volkswagen prototypes for Porsche (later known as the “Beetle”).

Construction of the first low-volume series of 40 Volkswagen. Reutter has 800 employees.

Introduction of the patented “Reutters

Reform Coach”, a predecessor of today’s cabriolets.

After the war, Reutter and 94 employees produce hand carts and small ovens.

Production of 500 bodies for the new 356 sports car made by Porsche.

Production of seat recline mechanism for various automotive

producers (Mercedes-Benz, Opel etc.).50-year company anniversary.

The early years – the birth of a legend.

Wilhelm Reutter (1874 – 1939) founds the "Wilhelm Reutter

Automobil Carrosserien" company in Stuttgart's Schlossstrasse in October 1906.

Porsche takes over the Reutter body plant with 1,000 employees. Reutter Carosserien becomes

RECARO. With 250 employees, the new company produces vehicle seats for Porsche.

The first seat in the world with an adjustable shoulder support is launched

on the market. The first light-weight sport seat for Porsche is developed.

The 1960s – impetus created by the economic boom.

Reutter develops and produces the body of the Porsche 901 prototype

(later Porsche 911). Introduction at the IAA in November 1963.

At the IAA, RECARO introduces the world’s first seat with side bolsters (first retrofit sport seat)

under the name “RECARO Idealsitz S”.

Development and productionof the first RECARO motorsport seat –

the „RECARO Profi“ full shell.

RECARO is the first manufacturer to develop the anti-submarining seat cushion design.

Plant moves to Kirchheim/Teck. Establishment of the first international plant (USA).

Groundbreaking innovations in ergonomics – RECARO Airmatic system (pneumatic lumbar supports),

extendable seat cushion, adjustable side bolsters on seat cushion and backrest (electrically adjustable).

The 1970s – fashions become colourful, as do car interiors.

Equipping the entire sports series for the AUdI S3, S4 and S6 models.

Market launch of the first child seat from RECARO – the “RECARO Start”

(„growing“ child seat).

Market launch of a new retrofit seat genera- tion: RECARO “Trend”, “Style”, “Sport”. RECARO

revolutionises the safety standards in professional motorsport. Launch of the world’s first racing shell

with head protection („RECARO Pro Racer“).

In terms of original equipment, RECARO focuses on premium

vehicles. Due to numerous innovations, this business sector has grown to 75% of

the total sales.

The 1990s – borders open up and new product ranges also open up for RECARO.

Opening of the new RECARO Centre in Kirchheim/Teck. Development of the RECARO

Vent system (seat ventilation system). First vehicle seat with asymmetrical adjustment

options (“RECARO Variomed”).

In 2006, RECARO celebrates its 100-year company anniversary. The “RECARO Pole Position (ABE)” is the

first racing shell with road approval. Market launch of the „RECARO Sportster CS“ with resource-saving hybrid construction.

World’s first retrofit seat with side airbag. Lightest standard seat – the carbon bucket seat for

the Porsche Carrera GT. New – the first office chairs from RECARO go into production. Establishment of the

RECARO Competence Centre Child Safety in Marktleugast.

The lightest retrofit seat in the world – the “RECARO Pole Position Carbon (ABE)”

club sport racing shell, weighing only 4.5kg, in full carbon. RECARO equips the 50th football

stadium with players’ benches.

The new millennium – challenge accepted.

RECARO is the first manufacturer to offer a racing shell for the HANS

system. The new hybrid light-weight seating concept is introduced at the IAA.

The first seat specially designed for taxi drivers – the “RECARO

T-Line“ with breathable upholstery.

First vehicle seat in the world with recline mechanism on both sides. The „RECARO

CSE” comfort seat is supplied with a memory function.

Introduction of the new “RECARO A8” sport seat at the IAA. It is the first hybrid seat made from metal components and

high-strength, glass fibre reinforced polyamide.

The 1980s – the Walkman, and RECARO, make music.

RECARO builds the first JIT plant in Bremen and supplies entire seat mountings for the

new Mercedes 190. First seat with stereo loudspeakers in the headrest.

World’s first: the “RECARO safety seat concept” (first vehicle seat with

integrated belt system). RECARO produces its first “airline passenger seat”.

During the seat development phase, ergonomics, comfort and

quality are our top priorities. We can rely on comprehensive

expertise from the various different corporate divisions – including

the airline passenger seat sector – and many years of experience

in producing of high-quality seating systems for the automotive

industry.

Dynamic sitting is generally beneficial as it relieves the strain on

muscles and spinal discs. As the driver's seat is a place of work,

changes in position should be avoided as much as possible as

they could have a negative influence on driving. The seat must

provide as much support as possible and the sitting position must

be so ergonomic and comfortable that a change of position

is hardly ever needed. In order to achieve this, RECARO has

introduced a unique process for analysing the comfort of vehicle

seats, which makes it possible to objectively measure the long-

term comfort. Previously this could only be assessed subjectively.

Using ultrasound sensors, posture and physical movements

can be accurately recorded and documented.Therefore the actual

ergonomic quality can be determined. The objective of this test

must be that the person makes as few conscious and unconscious

posture changes as possible – as these changes indicate

discomfort and inadequate support for the body. Among other

findings recent tests have shown that RECARO seats, in the

EXCELLENT POSTURE

We already know that the physical build of modern man has not been developed primarily for sitting down. But why exactly does

sitting cause so many problems? The main issue is maintaining the supply of fluid to the individual discs in the spine, which is not

ensured when a person is sitting down. In a sitting position, the discs lose more than 70% of the stored fluid in less than 20 minutes.

This results in a lack of nutrients and can cause long term damage. Preventing this from happening is one of our main objectives.

majority of cases, are considerably better than standard seat

systems. An evaluation of ten criteria for the seat cushion has

shown that RECARO seats are 60% better than a standard seat

and 45% better with the eleven backrest criteria. In particular,

the pronounced side bolsters and the individually adjustable

lumbar support on most RECARO seats provide the driver with

more support and hold to facilitate the correct posture in the

vehicle. When driving becomes strenuous work and the driver

needs long-lasting stamina, RECARO seats help take the strain.

After all, RECARO seats are subsidised in many countries for

good reason.

Many manufacturers try to equip their seats with numerous

adjustment options. Our seats do not need them. The

ergonomically shaped seat contour itself provides the

framework for a comfortable sitting experience. Supplemented

by the most important adjustment options – such as adjustable

side bolsters on the backrest and seat cushion, extendable seat

cushion, a lumbar support (depending on version) and comfort

features – such as heating or ventilation – a RECARO, with its

exceptional quality, ensures excellent posture in the car for many

years to come.

We are the only supplier on the market to place significantly

more stringent requirements on the safety of our seats. During

development, we subject the seats to loads that are approximately

20% greater than the statutory requirements for static tests

and loads that are a minimum of 300% greater for dynamic

tests. Consequently, our seats outperform the legal safety

requirements many times over.

Extensive exper tise from the standard seats sector has also

enabled us – as the first and only manufacturer in the world –

to produce seats with a universal side airbag. In combination

with the vehicle-specific baseframe, we are the only system

supplier who of fers all the components – seat, airbag and

baseframe – per fectly coordinated with each other and with

ABE approval. This is required in order that the new seat system

can be entered in your vehicle documentation and that af ter

installation, your vehicle's warranty and insurance cover will

still be valid.

Modern racing shells are a lot more than minimalist, puristic and simple seats for tough racing drivers. They are actually one of

the most important and sophisticated elements in the extremely technically complex vehicle. They are responsible for the drivers'

ability to concentrate and their health and safety. The racing shell is the direct link between person and machine.

THE LINK BETWEEN MAN ANd MACHINE

A RECARO racing shell benefits from expertise gained in more

than 100 years of company history and more than 40 years of

successful participation in motorsport. Two special materials are

used to make the characteristic and often copied shell designs

- high-strength, glass fibre reinforced plastic (GRP) or ultra-light

Carbon-Kevlar® composite (CFK), which, due to its structure,

provides maximum strength. The tried and tested manufacturing

processes in aircraft manufacture are subjected to rigorous

tests, as is the case with all safety-relevant parts, – as well

as thermal treatment in an autoclave. This process ensures

that the extremely high load-bearing capacity of the shells is

achieved at a very low weight. In order to prevent forces being

transmitted unnecessarily early in the manufac-turing process,

the final processing stages use state-of-the-art technology –

such as computer-aided water jet technology.

The latest crash tests have once again provided testimony to the

impressive safety and stability of RECARO racing shells. They

comply with FIA requirements in every respect. Our racing shells

not only withstand the most demanding loads but provide the

driver with almost tailor made excellent support in the seat in a

great variety of driving situations. They ensure a good ergonomic

position for the body. Only if the driver has no pain or symptoms

of tiredness for a long period of time – such as during rallying

or in long-distance races – is he able to drive safely and with

concentration and thus win races. The fastest racing car is no

use if the driver's arms or legs go numb because the seat is

inef fective.

RECARO seat training – eight steps to the correct sitting position

Push your bottom as near as possible to the backrest. The distance from the seat to the pedals is adjusted so that your knee is slightly bent when the pedals are fully depressed.

Set the seat height as high as possible. This ensures an unobstructed view to all sides and all displays on the instrument panel.

Adjust the extendable seat cushion so that the thighs rest on it to just above the knee. A rule of thumb is that there should be two to three fingers clearance between the seat edge and the hollow of the knee.

The seat's side bolsters should fit so snugly to the body that the upper body is supported comfortably at the side without being restricted.

Rest your shoulders as closely as possible on the backrest. Set the backrest tilt so that the steering wheel is easy to reach with slightly bent elbows. The shoulder contact must be maintained when the steering wheel is turned.

Set the seat cushion tilt so that it is easy to fully depress the pedals. The thighs should rest gently on the seat cushion without exerting pressure on it. Check the backrest tilt before starting the engine.

The lumbar support has been adjusted correctly when the lumbar part of the back is supported in its natural shape.

If possible, adjust the upper edge of the headrest to the same height as the top of the head. Tilt: The distance to the head should be approx. 2 cm.
