4 // SEATTLE CHAMBER MUSIC SOCIETY

The recently completed 2013 season was one of high artistic successes, but also great sadness. Seattle Chamber Music Society’s beloved founder Toby Saks passed away shortly after the Summer Festival ended, devastating the musicians, staff, board and entire community. Our hearts go out to Toby’s family, and SCMS is seeking ways to honor Toby’s vision and provide a legacy to commemorate her many contributions to the arts community, not only locally but worldwide.

The year also marked the passage of two other persons who contributed greatly to the success of the Festival: Arlene Wade, who was one of the founding Board members, and long-time Board member Helen Gurvich, who was instrumental in launching SCMS’s Endowment. I am pleased to report that the Endowment now exceeds $1.3 million, with effective leadership contributing to robust financial performance. Happily, SCMS again finished the year in the black.

During this second year of James Ehnes’s programming as Artistic Director, we saw strong attendance at both the Winter Festival (now six concerts, including a special concert that featured all six of Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos), and the Summer Festival, which featured several works

and musicians new to SCMS. The world premiere of Lawrence Dillon’s Sanctuary – described as a “musical musing for piano, horn and strings on the many meanings of the word” – was an especially well-received work, and a tribute to the foresight of the SCMS’s Commissioning Club, now in its eighth year.

SCMS’s community and outreach programs continue to delight and educate our audiences, including free pre-concert recitals and live concert broadcasts, the Classical Conversation series, programs in the schools, family concerts, and the second year of our successful free Volunteer Park Concert. And look for two new commercial recordings next year!

The hard-working staff and Board of SCMS are constantly challenged to help meet the artistic vision of James Ehnes, who is carrying on the high artistic standards set by Toby Saks. None of this would be possible without the ongoing generous support of our patrons, and for that we are most grateful. Your support helps ensure our financial stability long into the future. Our heart-felt thanks to all of you who helped make this a successful year.

2013: SEASON IN REVIEW //

Our second year under the leadership of Artistic Director James Ehnes continued the celebrated level of excellence that audiences have come to expect of performances by the Seattle Chamber Music Society (SCMS).

This excellence is represented in everything SCMS has done over the past year at Benaroya Hall and throughout the community to deepen relationships with attendees of our concerts since Toby Saks founded SCMS in 1982. James Ehnes has carried on the legacy of the late Toby Saks by continuing to program the finest pieces of chamber music. During both Winter and Summer Festivals there was unique programming like the complete Brandenburg Concerti by J.S. Bach this past winter. Several other programs featured the rarely heard harpsichord at SCMS concerts; during the summer concert programs included works by American composers that will lead to the latest SCMS recording for the Onyx Classics label.

Along with a number of returning Festival favorites, this season saw sixteen musicians make their SCMS debuts. A few highlights included Luc Beauséjour, a renowned harpsichordist, joining us for three concerts this winter and Jens Lindemann, former lead trumpet of the Canadian Brass, and Alexander Velinzon, the concertmaster for the Seattle Symphony, making their SCMS debuts this past summer.

Beyond the glorious concerts, SCMS continued to participate in the community by hosting a number of free events. These gave audiences the opportunity to watch how a performance comes together with Open Rehearsals, learn more about individual musicians with the Classical Conversation series and Meet the Artists, and enjoy performances by world-class musicians with Pre-Concert Recitals, Music Under the Stars, and Chamber Music in the Park, our 2nd annual live concert at Volunteer Park. Our emphasis on education took a central role with a Family Concert during each Festival, and Chamber Music in the Classroom, introducing student musicians to chamber music. We also had education programs for adults with our Festival Previews at local libraries and clubs, and special events for the Commissioning Club.

In every regard, SCMS has met our mission statement, all while balancing the budget in challenging economic times. It wouldn’t have been possible without the incredible support from our loyal patrons, the overwhelming generosity of our donors, and the dedication of our hard-working Board and staff. Thank you to everyone who helped make the 2013 Festival Season such a stunning success!

WINTER FESTIVAL: JANUARY 18-26

We expanded the Winter Festival this year from four concerts over a long weekend to six concerts over two weekends and it was a huge success! Nearly 2,900 people attended the main concerts – an increase of more than 800 ticket buyers from the previous year – with an average capacity of 89%. The Festival featured 26 artists, a new record for the Winter Festival, including eight making their debuts, performing works that spanned over 250 years of musical history. Highlights included several works by Benjamin Britten to mark his upcoming centennial; Steve Reich’s musical memoir Different Trains for string quartet and tape; a unique arrangement of Claude Debussy’s Sonata No. 4 by Kenneth Cooper for oboe, French horn, and harpsichord; and a sold-out concert featuring all six of Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos.

SUMMER FESTIVAL: JUNE 29-JULY 26

The 32nd season of the Summer Festival attracted 5,389 people to its 12 main concerts. Audiences filled Illsley Ball Nordstrom Recital Hall, at times to maximum capacity, to experience the talents and incredible music making of 39 of the world’s finest musicians, eight of whom made their SCMS debut. Festival highlights included a world premiere by Lawrence Dillon; works by American composers Barber, Bernstein, Carter, Copland, and Ives , which were recorded for a compact disc project with Onyx Classics; a second recording for the Onyx label featuring the Ehnes Quartet performing two Shostakovich quartets; and a celebration of the 100th anniversary of Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring for Piano, Four Hands.

“The four performers wasted no time getting down to business — the quartet pushed the pedal to the metal in the piece’s opening phrases and rarely looked back, keeping excitement

levels dialed up high for much of the performance.”THE SUNBREAK

COMMISSIONING CLUB

SCMS’s Commissioning Club supported the world premiere of Lawrence Dillon’s Sanctuary for horn, string quintet and piano. This was the seventh new work commissioned by the Club since its establishment in 2006 to support the creation of one new chamber work each year from an established, accomplished composer. In preparation for the premiere of the work the club held several events, including an interview with the composer and a special rehearsal of the septet.

OTHER SPECIAL EVENTS

Patrons enjoyed great chamber music and mingling with Festival musicians on a more intimate level at three Special House Concerts in private residences, with performances by violist Richard O’Neill in November, pianist Jeremy Denk in the spring and violinist Amy Schwartz Moretti and cellist Efe Baltacıgil in late September.

A special patron trip to Los Angeles in March included concerts at Los Angeles Philharmonic and Camerata Pacifica, tours of private art collections, architectural tours, and dinner at the home of Richard O’Neill, with special surprise guests James Ehnes and Robert deMaine.

“I leave a salon with a feeling of expansiveness. By the

time Larry Dillon came to our third and final salon of

the year, we as a group were truly ready and eager to hear what he had created for us.”

COMMISSIONING CLUB MEMBER

“The combination of these excellent musicians, their superb performances, the

variety of music played and the intimacy of a relatively small venue provide one of the best opportunities for

listening to classical music in Seattle.”

ENGAGING THE COMMUNITY //Community Engagement and Education programs help us share chamber music with broader audiences and nurture a life-long love of this great art form. Programs are designed for children, young music students and adults, experienced concert-goers and first-time listeners of chamber music. Many of our programs are free or significantly subsidized to make chamber music accessible for all.

CHAMBER MUSIC IN THE PARKOver 1,200 people enjoyed a live outdoor concert of exceptional chamber music for free at our second annual Chamber Music in the Park in the beautiful setting of Volunteer Park on July 17. An ensemble of our world-class Summer Festival artists performed Dvořák in America; this program featured two of the composer’s most famous chamber pieces: the String Quartet No. 12 and String Quintet, both written during his time in America. The free concert attracted many listeners who were new to chamber music and to our Festival, as well as many who were joining us again after last year’s inaugural event.

PRE-CONCERT RECITALSAt our free Pre-Concert Recitals, audiences heard world-class artists perform in 30-minute recitals that they designed themselves, along with musical commentary to enlighten listeners and enhance their experience. The highly popular recitals before all but one of the Winter and Summer Festival 18 main concerts attracted 6,093 people.

CLASSICAL CONVERSATION SERIESAudiences learned more about our Festival programming and artists through the free hour-long Classical Conversation series hosted by Dave Beck, formerly of KUOW, at Benaroya Hall’s Soundbridge Education Center. Artistic Director James Ehnes kicked off both the Winter and Summer Festival sessions of conversations, providing an overview of the music programmed for the upcoming concerts. Also participating in the informal noon-time chats were pianist Adam Neiman, violist Richard O’Neill, and violinist Amy Schwartz Moretti. Each Classical Conversation is available to listen to on our website or to download through iTunes.

“Not surprisingly, the high-energy finale brought the

listeners to their feet in acknowledgment of

playing that reached the heart of the music — and the

hearts of the audience.”THE SEATTLE TIMES

and performances!” AUDIENCE MEMBER

OPEN REHEARSALSAttendees had five opportunities to join us for our free Open Rehearsals. These events gave audiences a unique, inside view of the collaborative artistic process that makes the magic of our Festival come to life!

MUSIC UNDER THE STARSIn partnership with KING FM and the Seattle Parks Department, we brought free outdoor audio broadcasts of all 12 Summer Festival concerts into several Seattle parks for all to enjoy. Broadcasts rotated among Cascade Playground in South Lake Union, Volunteer Park in Capitol Hill, and Freeway Park near the Convention Center in downtown Seattle. Over 700 people listened to great chamber music while relaxing with family and friends in some of our city’s most beautiful and popular park settings.

MEET THE ARTISTSFree Meet the Artist events followed many of our Winter and Summer Festival concerts, with moderated 15-minute Q&A sessions with two or three Festival artists. Nearly 450 audience members participated in the eight post-concert Q&A sessions.

LIVE RADIO BROADCASTSOver 10,000 listeners in the Puget Sound area and worldwide tuned in each evening to Classic KING-FM to hear live radio broadcasts from Benaroya Hall of all 18 of our Summer and Winter Festival concerts. Rebroadcasts of 2012 and 2013 Festival concert highlights were heard on American Public Media’s Performance Today heard on 300 stations nationwide throughout the year.

FAMILY CONCERTSThis season, 772 children and adults enjoyed our Festival Family Concerts that combined animated storytelling with beautiful chamber music. The Winter Festival Family Concert featured popular children’s stories paired with well-known classical music arranged for string quartet, narrated by Classic KING-FM’s Marta Zekan. The Summer Festival Family Concert featured Festival pianists Jeewon Park and Anton Nel performing with first Children’s US Poet Laureate, Jack Prelutsky, as he read his own humorous verses inspired by Saint-Saëns’ timeless classic, The Carnival of the Animals.

COMMUNITY PREVIEWSDuring the Summer Festival we started a new series of preview lectures at local libraries and for private clubs. A combination of presentation and recorded music, these talks helped introduce the music to audiences. One of the events also included a performance with students from Craig Sheppard’s piano studio from the University of Washington.

“Just returned from a fabulous concert –took our

breath away!”AUDIENCE MEMBER

“The magically innocent and tuneful finale brought the concert to a beautifully

paced and vividly articulated conclusion.”

CHAMBER MUSIC IN THE CLASSROOMThrough our free Chamber Music in the Classroom program, we sent four Seattle-based professional musicians to work with young music students at Hamilton and Madison middle schools and Cleveland and Ballard high schools in the Seattle Public School District. Each school received weekly visits over a two-month period, including individual and small group coaching, and a 45-minute chamber ensemble performance by the musicians.

YOUNG ARTIST AWARDIn partnership with Classic KING-FM, the Seattle Chamber Music Society presented its second annual Young Artist Award competition for young solo and ensemble musicians ages 8-20. This year’s recipients of the Monika Meyer Clowes Memorial Award were cellist Olivia Marckx, and violinist Sarah Hall who, as part of their prize, performed for Summer Festival audiences during the July 15th Pre-Concert Recital. The two winners also had the chance to attend private coaching with Summer Festival musicians.

MASTERCLASSESSCMS’s Artistic Director and violinist James Ehnes and Festival artists violists David Harding and Toby Appel conducted special masterclasses for students at Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestra, Seattle University, University of Washington and the Academy of Music Northwest in January and July.

STUDENT TICKETS THROUGH THE SCHOLARSHIP TICKET FUNDThrough our donor-supported Scholarship Ticket Fund, SCMS provided free Winter Festival tickets to 17 high school and university music students who otherwise would not have been able to experience the Festival’s enriching chamber music performances and world-class artists.

“Our coach helped us realize the most effective way we could play our piece, thought formations, bowings, and help with our intonation”

// 132013 ANNUAL REPORT

Toby was born in New York City on January 8, 1942 and died at her home in Seattle on August 1, 2013. Her family, many friends and colleagues, and the musicians of the Seattle Chamber Music Society were with her during her last weeks. The cause of her death was pancreatic cancer.

Growing up in the Bronx, Toby switched from piano to cello at age 9 and continued her education at the High School of Performing Arts and The Juilliard School under teacher Leonard Rose. She won prizes in New York as a teenager, was first prizewinner at the International Pablo Casals Competition in Israel in 1962, and was a top prizewinner at the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. Toby was the 3rd woman to join the New York Philharmonic, where she played in the cello section from 1971 to 1976.

Toby moved to Seattle in 1976 and joined the music faculty of the University of Washington. As Professor of Music, she loved not only teaching her cello students, but taught music theory and music appreciation courses to thousands of students during her 37 years at the University.

In 1982 Toby and classical music supporters in Seattle founded the Seattle Chamber Music Society. She served as SCMS Artistic Director for 30 years and as Associate Artistic Director for the last two years, bringing more than 450 concerts with more than 300 musicians to audiences at The Lakeside School, The Overlake School, and Benaroya Hall. “Mama Tobs” home was the “clubhouse” for musicians to rehearse, eat and talk during their visits to Seattle, creating a unique and very successful Festival atmosphere.

As our Founder, and the Artistic Director for 30 years, Toby had a profound impact on many musicians, audience members, friends and people in our community.

ENDOWMENT FUND CAMPAIGNSCMS has raised over $1.3 million in gifts and pledges toward a $5 million Endowment Campaign to ensure our organization’s long-term financial health and stability. A separate SCMS Foundation was established to properly manage and dispense Endowment funds.

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR FUNDSeparate from the Endowment Campaign, the Artistic Director Fund supports our organization while we transition to a new Artistic Director and continue to build the Endowment Fund to its full potential. The Artistic Director Fund allows us to provide adequate resources and support for James Ehnes’ artistic vision and initiatives, while minimizing use of our cash reserves.
