Our recently completed 2012 season was the first to be programmed by new Artistic Director James Ehnes, who has continued the high standards set by SCMS founder Toby Saks. Our Winter Festival was a great success with full houses at every concert. More tickets were sold at the Summer Festival in July than have ever been sold in our 31-year history. Our first-ever free outdoor concert in Volunteer Park in July drew an astounding 1,800 people! Concert reviews were uniformly enthusiastic; our performances are now widely recognized as some of the best in the country.

Seattle Chamber Music Society lost a dear friend this year with the untimely passing of board member Max Gellert. Max’s reach in the Seattle arts community was broad and he will be missed. We dedicated our 2012 Summer Festival to Max, whose thoughtful questions and quiet generosity provided support and guidance for many years.

These are trying times for Seattle arts organizations. Once reliable contributions from foundations and corporations have declined, and the poor economy has adversely affected ticket sales for many organizations. Despite this environment, SCMS finished in the black in fiscal 2012, no small accomplishment!

With very strong finances, a talented board of directors, a skilled and dedicated staff, and a brilliant young new Artistic Director, the future of SCMS is indeed bright. We have set up a Foundation for our endowment that will ensure our financial stability long into the future. Winter Festival will expand from four concerts to six in 2013. The Board of Directors has approved a Strategic Plan to help meet the artistic vision of James Ehnes. Of course, none of this would be possible without the ongoing generous support of our enthusiastic patrons, and for that we are most grateful!

2012: SEASON IN REVIEW //

The inaugural season for our new Artistic Director, James Ehnes, ushered in many new beginnings for the Seattle Chamber Music Society (SCMS).

Carrying on with our long-standing tradition of presenting the highest level of artistry and chamber music programming, Mr. Ehnes also expanded into new territory, introducing audiences to chamber music and musicians never heard before at our Festivals and making this great music more widely accessible throughout our community.

Joining the line-up of SCMS stalwarts this season were five artists making their debut with our Festivals: cellists Efe Baltacıgil and Julie Albers, violinist Benjamin Beilman, clarinetist Ricardo Morales, and pianist Marc-André Hamelin. These newcomers shared their amazing talents with our audiences and added freshness and excitement to our Festival concerts.

“One of the great joys of this summer series is seeing and hearing new blends of individual musicians. There are characters like violist Marcus Thompson, who has been around this festival approximately forever, next to relative newcomers like the brilliant cellist Julie Albers, a bow’s length from the young but accomplished artistic director/violinist James Ehnes, all backed by Andrew Armstrong on piano.” –MELINDA BARGREEN The Seattle Times

For each concert at the 2012 Winter and Summer Festivals, Mr. Ehnes programmed at least one work never performed before at our Festivals. Our Community Engagement and Education programs provided more ways to enjoy great chamber music in free and informal formats, including our first-ever live outdoor concert at Volunteer Park.

Thanks to the incredible support from our loyal patrons and dedicated, hard-working Board and staff, SCMS was able to present these concerts and programs with deft fiscal oversight and management to end the year in the black with no accumulated deficit.

WINTER FESTIVAL: FEBRUARY 2-5

The perfect tonic to chase away the winter blues, the 2012 Winter Festival presented a compact week of exhilarating chamber music repertoire performed by 12 world-class musicians, all returning Festival regulars, who brought to the concerts “an exciting level of artistry” full of “focused, assured, and inspiring music making.” (The Seattle Times)

Over 2,000 people attended the first Winter Festival programmed by new Artistic Director James Ehnes who was warmly welcomed opening night with “a jam-packed house and a chorus of hoots, applause and shouts of approval” (Melinda Bargreen). The Festival included three main concerts and a special recital with violinist James Ehnes and pianist Andrew Armstrong. In addition to popular chamber music repertoire and lesser-known gems, audiences were treated to seven masterful works by Shostakovich, Brahms, Strauss, Bartók and Dvořák never before performed at our Festivals.

The Festival was enthusiastically received, with thrilling performances one after another that left audiences “eagerly awaiting the first full month’s festival to be programmed by James Ehnes for this coming summer.” (Seen and Heard International)

SUMMER FESTIVAL: JULY 2-29

The 31st season of the Summer Festival attracted 5,711 people to its 12 main concerts, filling Nordstrom Recital Hall to near full capacity. The Festival featured the talents of 37 exceptional artists—soloists with major orchestras, recitalists in the world’s capitals, principals of leading orchestras, and prizewinners at international competitions.

A “scorching Bartók” opened the Festival with a “smoking hot” performance by violinist James Ehnes and pianist Jon Kimura Parker, who “sounded as if they were inventing the music as they go, so spontaneous is their musical partnership.” (Melinda Bargreen)

Showcasing the vastness and richness of chamber music repertoire, programming included traditional masterpieces, a world premiere commissioned by SCMS’s Commissioning Club, and 20 works never performed before at our Festivals by such great masters as Tchaikovsky, Mozart, Beethoven, Saint-Saëns, Mendelssohn, Brahms, Bartók, Dvořák and Debussy.

Throughout the month of July, Festival concerts “hit one high note after another” and closed with a truly grand performance of a Prokofiev rarity, the recently reconstructed complete ballet music Trapeze, with

“a lineup of artists who expertly plumbed the drama and excitement of this neglected score” to make it an absolute triumph. (Melinda Bargreen)

“It’s a good example of the gratifying novelty Society director James Ehnes is bringing to the summer festival; he’s finding a good balance between familiar fare—the musical equivalent

of beach reading—and intriguing discoveries.”GAVIN BORCHERT

COMMISSIONING CLUB

SCMS’s Commissioning Club presented the world premiere of Quartet for Piano and Strings by Canadian composer and two-time Juno award nominee Gary Kulesha at the 2012 Summer Festival. This was the sixth new work commissioned by the Club, which started in 2006 to support the creation of one new chamber work each year from an established, accomplished composer.

Commissioning Club members were invited to learn more about Kulesha’s compositional process and musical influences through three Commissioning Club Salons held throughout the season by SCMS’s Education Programs Manager Jeremy Jolley, a composer himself with a Masters in Composition from University of Washington. Gary Kulesha joined members for the final salon in May to discuss his commissioned piece with musical examples.

OTHER SPECIAL EVENTS

Patrons enjoyed great chamber music and mingling with Festival musicians on a more intimate level at two House Concerts in private residences, with performances by cellist Edward Arron and pianist Jeewon Park in the fall, and violinist Augustin Hadelich and pianist Andrew Armstrong in the spring.

SCMS’s first-ever auction event was held at Mt. Baker Community Club in June, with 85 friends and supporters raising over $40,000 for our organization. The event included a sit-down buffet dinner, silent and live auction, wine ring toss, dessert dash, and paddle-raising to support our Community Engagement and Education Programs.

“The expectation level is high at this festival, producing

constant gems as they have. But the musicians all seem very comfortable with excellence, which makes the

experience a joy.”JOHN SUTHERLAND

ENGAGING THE COMMUNITY //An important part of our organization’s mission and a focus of new Artistic Director James Ehnes, Community Engagement and Education programs help us share chamber music with broader audiences and nurture a life-long love of this great art form. Programs are designed for young music students and adults, experienced concert-goers and first-time listeners of chamber music. Many of our programs are free or significantly subsidized to make chamber music accessible for all.

PRE-CONCERT RECITALSConsidered one of the Best Bets in Seattle by Seattle Magazine, SMCS’s Pre-Concert Recitals are “worth their weight in gold” (The Seattle Times). Where else can audiences hear world-class artists perform intimately in recital for free, with programs of their own design?

The highly popular 30-minute recitals before each of the Winter and Summer Festival 15 main concerts attracted 5,625 people.

Typically featuring one or two Festival artists in solo repertoire, all three Winter Festival recitals departed from the formula and featured four artists performing Brahms’ complete string quartets. This work is normally too challenging for artists to be able to perform with such little rehearsal time; however, this particular group of stalwart musicians was more than up for the task. James Ehnes, Amy Schwartz Moretti, Richard O’Neill, and Robert deMaine regularly perform together as an ensemble not just at our Festivals, but at other concert venues as well. Their “high-octane, impassioned reading” of the Brahms quartets was a brilliant start to the Festival season. (Seen and Heard International)

The Summer Festival pre-concert recital highlights included Festival debuting artist Marc-André Hamelin’s performance of his own piano compositions, the premiere of a string quartet by composer and Festival artist Adam Neiman, and composer Gary Kulesha’s introduction to his new piece commissioned by the Seattle Chamber Music Society’s Commissioning Club, Quartet for Piano and Strings.

MEET THE ARTISTSSCMS offered a new way for audiences to learn more about our Festival artists, personally and professionally. Free Meet the Artists events followed many of our Winter and Summer Festival concerts, with moderated 15-minute Q&A sessions with two or three Festival artists. Over 80 audience members participated in each of the 10 post-concert Q&A sessions.

“The expectation level is high at this festival, producing

constant gems as they have. But the musicians all seem very comfortable with excellence, which makes the

experience a joy.”JOHN SUTHERLAND

CLASSICAL CONVERSATION AND OPEN REHEARSALSA new program, Classical Conversation is hosted by KUOW’s Dave Beck at Benaroya Hall’s Soundbridge Education Center. The free noon-time event allows audiences to get to know Festival musicians on a more personal level and learn about the music being performed at upcoming concerts. The first Winter Festival conversation drew 50 attendees to hear Mr. Beck talk with new Artistic Director James Ehnes. Nearly 100 people came to the three Summer Festival conversations with James Ehnes, Jeremy Denk and Andrew Armstrong. All conversations were recorded for podcast to reach wider audiences.

Free Open Rehearsals at Nordstrom Recital Hall followed each of the Classical Conversations, and allowed audiences to sit in on working rehearsals and observe the collaborative artistic process as Festival musicians prepare for upcoming concerts.

MUSIC UNDER THE STARSWe expanded our free remote live outdoor broadcasts of all Summer Festival concerts to several Seattle neighborhood parks. Along with Westlake Park in downtown Seattle, this season we presented Music Under the Stars live concert broadcasts at Cascade Playground in South Lake Union and Volunteer Park in Capitol Hill. Concert broadcasts rotated among the three parks each week throughout the month of July and attracted regular crowds.

Despite the rainy start to July, over 630 people enjoyed listening to our Summer Festival live concert broadcasts.

CHAMBER MUSIC IN THE PARK LIVE OUTDOOR CONCERTSCMS was overwhelmed by the community response to our first live outdoor evening concert at Volunteer Park in Capitol Hill on July 25th. Over 1,800 people—many new to SCMS and to chamber music—enjoyed a free concert with Festival artists James Ehnes, Amy Schwartz Moretti, Marcus Thompson, Che-Yen Chen, Andrés Díaz, and Robert deMaine. The 60-minute concert featured Dvořák’s Sextet for Strings in A Major and Tchaikovsky’s Souvenir de Florence for String Sextet. A musical instrument “petting zoo” provided by Music Center of the Northwest was set up beforehand for families to explore. With the concert’s success, we look forward to making this a regular part of our Summer Festival programming.

“I’m impressed by the variety of concert programs.”

LIVE RADIO BROADCASTSOver 25,000 listeners in the Puget Sound area and worldwide tuned in each evening to Classic KING-FM to hear live radio broadcasts from Benaroya Hall of all 16 of our Summer and Winter Festival concerts. Rebroadcasts of 2011 and 2012 Festival concert highlights were heard on American Public Media’s Performance Today heard on 300 stations nationwide throughout the year.

FAMILY CONCERTSFor 14 years, SCMS has included Family Concerts as part of its regular Festival programming to introduce our youngest audiences to chamber music. The 40-minute concerts are designed for children ages 5-10 and affordably priced ($10 general admission) for whole families to experience together.

This season, 513 children and adults enjoyed animated storytelling with beautiful chamber music accompaniment. The Winter Festival Family Concert featured Bryan Johanson’s The Bremen Town Musicians, a whimsical musical adaptation of a tale by the brothers Grimm; and the Summer Festival Family Concert featured Peter Schickele’s delightful and humorous adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s tale, The Emperor’s New Clothes. Music Center of the Northwest provided a “petting zoo” of musical instruments in the lobby before each concert.

STUDENT TICKETS THROUGH THE SCHOLARSHIP TICKET FUNDThrough our donor-supported Scholarship Ticket Fund, SCMS provided free Winter Festival tickets to 23 high school and university music students who otherwise would not have been able to experience the Festival’s enriching chamber music performances and world-class artists.

YOUNG ARTIST COMPETITIONThe Seattle Chamber Music Society partnered with Classic KING-FM to present the first annual Young Artist Award, a competition for young solo and ensemble musicians ages 8-20. Out of more than 200 entrants, this year’s winner was violinist Marié Rossano from Bellevue, Washington, and student of Ida Kavafian at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. Marié earned a Seattle Young Artists Festival Medal in 2005, and since has appeared as guest soloist with many area orchestras, including the Seattle Symphony, Northwest Sinfonietta and Seattle Philharmonic.

As part of her prize, the talented young artist performed for Summer Festival audiences during the July 6th pre-concert recital, along with Festival musicians Jeewon Park and Edward Arron. The Clowes Memorial Endowment Fund provided special support for this recital, plus individual coaching with Festival musicians Augustin Hadelich and Ida Levin.

CHAMBER MUSIC IN THE CLASSROOMTo help promote chamber music in Seattle Public Schools, SCMS provided free Chamber Music in the Classroom visits to four middle and high school music programs. Each week for three to four consecutive weeks, professional string quartet musicians worked with 480 young music students from Hamilton and Madison middle schools and Cleveland and Ballard high schools. Each school received a 45-minute chamber ensemble performance by the quartet; along with individual and small group coaching by musicians to develop technical and performance skills and improve ensemble playing and communication.

MASTER CLASS INSTRUCTIONAs part of our new partnership with Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestra, SCMS Festival artist and cellist Bion Tsang conducted a special master class for 60 of their young orchestra musicians in February.

“This is one of the best there is! I introduce people to you; I believe in what you are doing.”AUDIENCE MEMBER

ENDOWMENT FUND CAMPAIGNSCMS has raised over $1.2 million in gifts and pledges toward a $5 million Endowment Campaign to ensure our organization’s long-term financial health and stability. A separate SCMS Foundation was established to properly manage and dispense Endowment funds.

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR FUNDFor the second year now, SCMS raised funds to support the Artistic Director Fund. Separate from the Endowment Campaign, this interim fund supports our organization while we transition to a new Artistic Director and continue to build the Endowment Fund to its full potential. The Artistic Director Fund allows us to provide adequate resources and support for James Ehnes’ artistic vision and initiatives, while minimizing use of our cash reserves.
