    HOUSTON DYNAMO (9-9-3; 30 pts.) vs. SEATTLE SOUNDERS FC (10-6-5; 35 pts.)MLS REGULAR SEASON - WEEK 21

    Saturday, July 27, 2019 · 7:00 p.m. CDT · BBVA Stadium · Houston, Texas

HOUSTON DYNAMO HOST SEATTLE SOUNDERS FC FOR SPACE CITY NIGHTThe Houston Dynamo returns to league play after hosting a midweek clash with Club America in the quarterfinals of the Leagues Cup. Captain DaMarcus Beasley scored his second goal of the year late in the second half to force penalty kicks at BBVA Stadium. The Dynamo fell in penalty kicks after going toe-for-toe with one of the most suc-cessful clubs in the region.

The Dynamo made 10 lineup changes for Wednesday’s game and six players return to the fold this weekend after missing the midweek clash. A.J. DeLaGarza, Maynor Figueroa and Kiki Struna return to the Dynamo backline. Houston’s Argentine duo – Tomas Martinez and Matias Vera are available to duel with Uruguayan playmaker Nico-las Lodeiro. Tommy McNamara and Houston’s leading goal scorer, Mauro Manotas, also return to the Dynamo frontline. Dynamo forward Alberth Elis returns to league play after serving a one-game suspension. The Honduran international has torched through most of the league but Elis has yet to score on the Sounders. Seattle is one of two Western Conference teams that have managed to evade La Pantera’s tear through MLS.

Houston will aim to go into the All-Star break with a victory – their eighth at BBVA Stadium this season and position themselves in the middle of the playoff race toward the final stretch of the season. Houston will also enjoy a small window to recover after a grueling stretch that saw the Dynamo play 10 games since June 11, including a three-game cross country road trip.

Seattle enters Saturday’s match looking for their first victory in three games after losing to the Portland Timbers last Sunday at CenturyLink Field. The Sounders enter the match with a 2-5-3 record away from the Pacific Northwest but hold a four-game winning streak against the Dynamo. Houston’s last victory over the Sounders came on opening day in 2017 with goals from Erick Torres and Romell Quioto. The Sounders are powered by a South American duo that has combined for 12 goals and 10 assists this season. Raul Ruidiaz leads the team with eight goals and has tallied one assist in 12 matches for Seattle. The Peruvian international has missed time while representing Peru at the 2019 Copa America in Brazil, reaching the final of the tournament for the first time since 1975. Nicolas Lodeiro has tallied nine assists this season, almost a third of the total assists for the Sounders this season.

Houston will aim to limit Lodeiro’s impact after a challenging time containing with the Uruguayan playmaker. The midfielder has tallied four assists against Houston and holds the all-time regular season series record for assists in a single game with three – which came in a 3-2 victory for the Sounders at BBVA Stadium on Oct. 21, 2018, Seattle’s first and only victory over Houston in the Lone Star State. Although Seattle holds a 9-4-6 lead in the series, four of the last five matches have been decided by a single goal, including the last meeting between both clubs on May 11. An early goal from Cristian Roldan gave Seattle three points at CenturyLink Field and gave Houston their second defeat of the season.

JAMES HARDEN JOINS HOUSTON DYNAMO & DASH OWNERSHIP GROUP

HOUSTON (Thursday, July 18, 2019) – Houston basketball superstar James Harden has joined the ownership group of the Houston Dynamo, Houston Dash and BBVA Stadium, Harden and the club announced today.

On the court, Harden was the 2018 NBA Most Valuable Player and has led the United States to gold medals at the 2012 Olympic Games and the 2014 FIBA World Cup. The 29-year-old joined the Houston Rockets ahead of the 2012-13 season and has been named an NBA All-Star in each season while leading the team to the playoffs every year. Harden has earned first-team All-NBA honors in five of the past six seasons.

“I’m very excited about the opportunity to join the ownership group of the Houston Dynamo and Houston Dash and proud to be a part of a club with tremendous history and a great future,” Harden said. “Houston is my home now, and I saw this as a way to invest in my city and expand my business interests at the same time. Soccer in general, and especially MLS, have ex-ploded in this country throughout my lifetime. I’ve been a fan of the game for several years, and I know that Houston has a massive soccer fanbase, so it was an easy decision for me when this opportunity arose.”

Harden joins an ownership group led by Gabriel Brener, who purchased the majority share of the team in December 2015. Born in Mexico City, Brener is the only Mexican-born owner of a major league American professional sports team. He is the CEO of the Brener International Group, a private investment firm and family office with global business and investment in-terests.

“We are thrilled to welcome James into our club. He’s an icon in the Hous-ton community, and not only is he a great basketball player, he has an ex-tremely smart and savvy mind for business,” Brener said. “James will bring a very unique perspective to our ownership group, and I’m looking forward to hearing his thoughts and opinions on the club going forward.”

Major League Soccer has grown from 10 teams in its inaugural season of

1996 to 24 clubs this season and has recently announced its intention to expand to 30 clubs in the coming years. The 25th, 26th and 27th clubs to join MLS have already been announced as Nashville SC, set to join next year, and Inter Miami CF and Austin FC, which are slated to enter the league in 2021.

MLS boasts the youngest fanbase among the major American professional sports leagues to go along with the youngest average player age of any league in the United States. The average MLS club valuation has increased nearly 650 percent over the past decade, and 20 of the league’s 24 clubs have built or renovated their stadiums specifically for soccer matches.

As a native of Los Angeles and a gold medal-winning professional athlete, Harden already has two things in common with another member of the club’s ownership group, Oscar De La Hoya. De La Hoya founded Golden Boy Promotions in 2002 after a legendary career in the ring in which he captured 10 world titles and won gold at the 1992 Olympics.

“James is already at the top of the game in his sport, so it’s only natural to want to take on new challenges beyond the court,” De La Hoya said. “He knows the drive and the determination it takes to be the absolute best, and I’m excited that he’s going to bring that attitude to our club.”

Harden also joins Ben Guill, the Managing Partner of White Deer Energy, a Houston-based energy private equity fund with $2.2 billion in committed capital, and Jake Silverstein, a private investor based in Portland, Oregon. Silverstein leads Stormlight Expeditions, the Silverstein family’s private in-vestment platform.

Harden was represented in this transaction by business manager Loren-zo McCloud along with True Capital management, while the Dynamo and Dash were represented by Brener Group Chief Operating Officer and club Executive Vice President Chris Hopkins.

The shooting guard adds another high-profile investment to his already Im-pressive portfolio, which includes the sports drink BodyArmor, Art of Sport (A.O.S.), a body- and skin-care brand tailored specifically for athletes, and the sock company Stance, among others.

On the field, Harden joins a club with a rich history of competing for and winning championships. Since their inception in 2006, the Dynamo have captured three domestic titles, including winning the MLS Cup in the club’s first two years of existence and the 2018 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The Dynamo have advanced to at least the semifinal round of major domestic tournaments eight times in 13 years, including seven appearances in the Conference Championship round of the Audi MLS Cup playoffs and four trips to the MLS Cup Final. The club has represented Houston in interna-tional competition on seven occasions, including this spring in the Scotia-bank Concacaf Champions League.

The Houston Dash are in their sixth season under the guidance of first-year head coach James Clarkson. Led by stars such as forwards Kealia Ohai and England international Rachel Daly, the Dash are aiming for their first playoff berth this fall.

BBVA COMPASS STADIUM RENAMED BBVA STADIUMHOUSTON (THURSDAY, JUNE 13, 2019) - BBVA, the Houston Dynamo and Dash, and key city leaders gathered at the newly-renamed BBVA Stadium on Thursday to unveil the iconic venue’s new signage in a ceremonial press conference, marking a new beginning for an East End neighborhood staple. The new stadium name and corresponding signage change is part of BBVA’s ongoing brand unification happening across the globe. BBVA Group’s new logo and unified brand signals an advancement in the financial institution’s efforts to become a single, global digital entity in all areas where it oper-ates.

“BBVA Stadium has been a key venue for the bank for multiple reasons,” said BBVA USA President and CEO Javier Rodriguez Soler. “It has hosted various sports, entertainment and charity events, cultivated a solid part-nership between the bank and the Houston Dynamo and Dash, and over the past seven years, has provided an economic boost to the East End neighborhood. By updating the stadium’s name, we are re-establishing our commitment to creating even more opportunities to an up-and-coming area and its residents.”

More than 75 attendees were on-hand to witness the stadium’s name un-veiling, which Rodriguez Soler led with a countdown from a press confer-ence podium in the stadium’s Audi Sport Club.

In addition to the unveiling, Rodriguez Soler also announced the First Annu-al BBVA Classic, which will feature the Dynamo and Mexican powerhouse Club América from Liga BBVA. The match will be held on Wednesday, July 24 at 7:30 p.m. CDT as part of the new Leagues Cup tournament between Major League Soccer and Liga BBVA.

A portion of the proceeds from the game will benefit the Tejano Center for Community Concerns, a neighborhood resource center for families across Houston. The center, originally founded in East End in 1992, strives to de-velop education, social, health and community institutions that empower families to transform their lives.

A dozen students from the Raul Yzaguirre Schools for Success Elite STEM Primary Academy’s girls and boys soccer teams attended the ceremony and were recognized during the press conference. The academy is one of the various programs the center offers to fulfill its mission.

Carlos Torres Vila, BBVA Group Executive Chairman, also made the trip from Madrid, Spain to attend the press conference and took a moment to address the people in attendance on behalf of the bank’s global operations.

“BBVA’s brand name unification and logo change are part of our purpose, to bring the age of opportunity to everyone. In the digital age, customer experience is what matters the most. At BBVA we aim to provide the best products, services, and experiences to all our customers, in every country.” said Torres Vila. “I’m honored to have been in Houston to demonstrate our commitment to the city by unveiling our unified brand name and new logo on one of Houston’s own landmarks, the BBVA Stadium.”

The Thursday press conference also included an array of key Houston lead-ership and figures, including City Councilman Robert Gallegos, represen-tatives from the City of Houston, the East End District, the Harris Coun-ty-Houston Sports Authority, Houston Dynamo Legend Bobby Boswell and Houston Dynamo and Dash President John Walker.

“BBVA Stadium has quickly established itself as a premier sports and enter-tainment venue not only in Houston, but in America,” Walker said. “Along with our partners at BBVA, we look forward to continuing to deliver cham-pionship-level experiences to fans from around the world and showcasing the BBVA brand on a global scale for years to come.”

BBVA Stadium first opened in 2012 and has played host to more than 325 ticketed events including Houston Dynamo and Houston Dash homes games, Texas Southern University home football games, international soc-cer and rugby matches and concerts. The stadium has hosted 19 different international soccer clubs, 29 men’s and women’s national soccer teams and 17 men’s and women’s national rugby teams.

Since the stadium opened its doors, the bank’s commitment to the East End has helped strengthen the area’s economy on multiple fronts. More recently, the BBVA Foundation awarded more than $130,000 to non-profits serving East End neighborhoods in 2018.

BBVA also provided a combined $29.5 million in construction financing and equity investment in the amount of $20.5 million on two multi-family housing developments in East End neighborhoods during 2018. Those af-fordable housing projects include Campanile on Commerce and New Hope Housing Harrisburg.

Further to BBVA’s commitment to the East End, since 2016, the bank has invested $3.25 million to LISC Greater Houston that resulted in the creation of affordable housing in East End neighborhoods.

    HOUSTON DYNAMO TECHNICAL STAFF

HOUSTON DYNAMO HEAD COACH WILMER CABRERA

Wilmer Cabrera is in his third season as the head coach of the Houston Dynamo. He was named to the position on October 28, 2016. Cabrera was previously the first head coach the Rio Grande Valley FC Toros, the Dyna-mo's hybrid USL affiliate. He also served time as a head coach and assistant coach in Major League Soccer and head coach of the United States Un-der-17 Boys National Team.

In his first two years on the Dynamo bench, Cabrera has guided the club to within a game of its fifth MLS Cup appearance and captured the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup championship for the first time in club history. Cabre-ra's sides have been synonymous with fast-paced, attacking soccer and have set club scoring records in each of his two seasons in charge. He has also shepherded in a youth movement that saw an influx of talented rising stars from around the globe, particularly from Central and South America, and he has shown the ability to get the most out of his young charges.

A native of Colombia, Cabrera is bilingual in English and Spanish and was the first Latin American head coach at the helm of a U.S. national team. He served as head coach of the United States Under-17 Boys National Team from October 2007 to January 2012 and compiled a 36-29-15 record, guid-ing the U.S. U-17s through two U-17 World Cup qualifying cycles ahead of the 2009 and 2011 FIFA U-17 FIFA World Cups, including progression to the Round of 16 at both tournaments. Cabrera also led his squad to a first-place finish at the 2011 CONCACAF U-17 Championship.

Cabrera began his MLS coaching career as assistant under current FC Dallas head coach Oscar Pareja for two seasons with the Colorado Rapids (2012-13) before he was head coach of Chivas USA in 2014, the club’s final season in MLS.

As the first head coach of Rio Grande Valley FC, Cabrera guided the expan-sion club to a record of 14-7-9 and second-place finish in the USL’s Western Conference. RGV FC had the best goal difference – plus 23 – in the Western Conference, and allowed just 24 goals, second-fewest in the 29-team USL, and fewest in the West. The Toros also led the conference with 16 shutouts and set a USL-record with a streak of 760 minutes without conceding a goal in July and August.

As a player, the former defender made 48 appearances for the Colombia National Team, including three starts at the 1998 FIFA World Cup, inclusion on the roster at the 1990 FIFA World Cup, and a role at four Copa America tournaments (1989, ’91, ’95 and ’97). His 20-year professional playing ca-reer began at age 17 with Independiente Sante Fe in Colombia and includ-ed spells in Argentina and Costa Rica before a final stop in the United States with the Long Island Rough Riders.

Cabrera’s career in youth development began as an assistant coach with Suffolk (New York) Community College followed by a stint as coach with the BW Gottschee Academy in New York City.

IN ELITE COMPANY LAST 2 YEARSDynamo forward Mauro Manotas enjoyed a breakout season in 2018, with a club-record 19 goals in league play and 25 across all competitions. He's continued that torrid form so far this year, with six goals and four assists through 13 games.

Manotas' 25 goals over the last two seasons are tied for fourth-most in MLS, behind only a trio of world-class stars in 2018 league MVP Josef Mar-tinez, Swedish legend Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Mexican star Carlos Vela.

ELIS & MANOTAS ARE DUAL THREATSDynamo FW Alberth Elis has been virtually unstoppable so far this season, with five goals and six assists through Houston's first 13 games and another four goals that he helped create but wasn't officially credited with (two opponents' own goals, a goal off of a deflected shot and a penalty he won).

Elis established himself as one of the league's most dangerous attacking threats last year, earning his first trip to the MLS All-Star Game in the pro-cess, and has only solidified thata reputation through the first two months of this season.

Despite playing two or even three fewer games than many of his coun-terparts in the league, Elis is tied for sixth in the league with a combined 10 goals and assists. Thanks in part to Elis' assists, his teammate Mauro Manotas is also tied for sixth in the league with six goals and four assists so far this year.

    GAME 22

LAST MATCH vs. CLUB AMERICAHOUSTON (Wednesday, July 24, 2019) – A late goal by defender DaMar-cus Beasley gave the Houston Dynamo a 1-1 draw with reigning Mexican champions Club América tonight at BBVA Stadium in the quarterfinal of the inaugural Leagues Cup, but Las Aguilas prevailed 6-5 on penalties to move on to the semifinals.

Beasley scored his second goal of the year for the club – both in interna-tional competition – when he joined the attack in the 85th minute and ran onto a pass from defender Kevin Garcia inside the penalty area to the left of goal. The American soccer legend took a touch before firing a rocket into the upper right corner of the net, giving América goalkeeper Agustín Marchesín no chance.

Midfielder Nicolás Benedetti gave Club América the lead in the 73rd minute after he controlled a ball from forward Nicolás Castillo at the edge of the box. Benedetti poked the ball past an onrushing effort from Dynamo goal-keeper Joe Willis at the near post to break the gridlock.

In the penalty shootout, Marchesín saved Houston’s first penalty attempt to give América the early advantage and the teams each converted their second, third and fourth kicks. In the fifth round, América forward Roger Martinez’s effort was off target and Houston’s Eric Bird converted to send the shootout into extra frames. Both teams made their sixth attempt and América forward Giovani dos Santos made his shot in Round 7. Houston de-fender Sam Junqua’s shot went over the bar to give the visitors the victory.

The Dynamo outshot América 12-9 in the game and had a number of chanc-es to take the lead prior to Benedetti’s goal, but the hosts were unable to find the opening they needed. Forward Michael Salazar led all players on the night with five shots while fellow striker Alberth Elis had three, but each time the América defense was able to do just enough or Marchesín was there for a save to deny the forwards.

Willis was called into action in the eighth minute after Club América for-ward Roger Martinez cut to his outside foot to create space for a shot that was saved at the near post. He came up big once again in the 67th minute after Dynamo defender Alejandro Fuenmayor conceded a free kick at the edge of the penalty box. Castillo took the free kick and his effort went over the wall but was palmed away by the Dynamo shot stopper at the goal line.

The Dynamo return to MLS action on Saturday as they host Seattle Sound-ers FC for Space City Night presented by Pepsi Zero Sugar. Saturday’s match is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. CDT kickoff, with tickets starting at $15.

    GAME 22

THE LAST TIME THEY METSEATTLE (Saturday, May 11, 2019) – The Houston Dynamo dropped a 1-0 result to Seattle Sounders FC at CenturyLink Field tonight after the Sound-ers capitalized on a moment of individual skill for the match’s only goal.

Although Houston largely controlled the run of play early on, Seattle’s goal came off of a second ball following a corner kick. Dynamo midfielder Matías Vera cleared the initial corner, but the ball fell to Sounders midfield-er Cristian Roldan who finished on the volley to the upper left corner from outside the box in the fifth minute.

Houston almost answered Seattle’s opening goal in the eighth minute when midfielder Memo Rodriguez crossed a ball that was cleared by Sounders defender Brad Smith. The ball fell to Dynamo forward Mauro Manotas in-side the box, but he was tackled off the ball by Sounders defender Román Torres.

Houston had two more golden chances to level things before halftime with back-to-back crosses into the heart of the box intended for forward Alberth Elis. Dynamo defender A.J. DeLaGarza found the Honduran international near the penalty spot in the 23rd minute, but his diving header skipped over the crossbar into the top netting. Two minutes later, defender Adam Lundkvist found Elis unmarked, but his header went over the crossbar.

Seattle, likewise, saw a pair of chances to double their lead go begging late in the half. In the 42nd minute, defender Brad Smith found forward Jordan Morris at the far post, but his header went over the crossbar. A minute later, Seattle captain Nicolás Lodeiro hit the woodwork with a shot from outside the box.

Houston's final opportunity of the first half came seconds before refeere Alex Chilowicz called for halftime. Lundkvist found Manotas, who split the Sounders backline for an uncontested shot, but his effort on the half-volley whistled over the bar.

Seattle midfielder Harry Shipp forced a diving save at the far post from Dynamo goalkeeper Joe Willis to open the second half. Willis finished with three saves against the Sounders.

Houston’s best chance in the second half came late through a pair of sub-stitutes. Forward Romell Quioto, who came on at the 80th minute, worked free down the left flank a minute later and whipped in a low centering ball that found midfielder Tommy McNamara, a 72nd-minute sub, at the pen-alty spot. McNamara’s left-footed effort sailed over the bar as the Dynamo suffered their first shutout of the year in league play.

Tonight’s match was the first of three in an eight-day span for the Dynamo. The club returns to BBVA Compass Stadium on Wednesday, May 15 to host the Portland Timbers, and will welcome in English superstar Wayne Rooney and D.C. United on Saturday, May 18.
