THIS WEEK VS. WEST HAM UNITED

ABOUT WEST HAMFounded in 1885, West Ham United has been a mainstay in top-flight English football for over 100 years. West Ham will move into the new Olympic Stadium for the upcoming campaign after spending 112 years at the historic Boleyn Ground in East London. The club has played in five FA Cup finals, winning three of them along the way. In addition to domestic titles, the Hammers won European Cup Winners Cup in 1965 before finishing second in the 1976 edition.

The current manager is Slaven Bilic, who joined the club in June of 2015 after coaching stints in Croatia, Russia and Turkey. The squad finished the 2015-2016 Premier League campaign in seventh and set a club record in the process by collecting 62 points. West Ham garnered a record of 16-8-14. The club will play the first league match in the Olympic Stadium against Chelsea on August 13, 2016.

WEST HAM CONNECTIONSTYRONE MEARSCurrent Seattle Sounders FC defender Tyrone Mears played for West Ham during the 2006-2007 Barclays Premier League campaign and registered six league appearances. In his second season with Seattle, Mears has amassed 15 starts in MLS for a total of 1350 minutes. Across his two seasons in Rave Green, Mears has appeared for the Sounders in 48 regular season matches.

HARRY REDKNAPPDuring his playing days, Harry Redknapp featured over 150 times for the West Ham first team. The former Tottenham manager then spent two years as a player for the North American Soccer League Sounders from 1977-1979. Redknapp then returned to the Boleyn Ground as the manager and led the club from 1994-2001.

GEOFF HURSTThe West Ham legend handed the English national team their only major tournament trophy with a hat trick in the 1966 World Cup final. After his playing days in East London, he spent a solitary season in Seattle during the 1976 NASL season and made 23 appearances for the club.

BOBBY MOOREThe former West Ham captain spent 15 years with the Hammers and amassed over 500 appearances during that span. After his playing career in England, Moore moved stateside and joined up with the Sounders for the 1978 cam-paign. Moore appeared seven times for Seattle during his solitary season in the northwest.

COACHING CORNERWest Ham United performs under the direction of Manager Slaven Bilic, who accumulated a 22-12-17 record across all competitions in his first year as manager. Now in his second year at the helm, the Croatian looks to build off a successful campaign that saw his club finish seventh in the Premier League. The 47-year-old played professionally from 1988-2000, including a stint with West Ham from 1996-1997. He coach the Croatia National Team from 2006-2012, plus clubs in Croatia, Russia and Turkey before joining the Hammers.

SOUNDERS FC SOUNDBYTESHead Coach Sigi Schmid:

On the current form of the team: “With the win on Tuesday in Salt Lake in the Open Cup, even though it was on PK’s, and getting a point [in Toronto] it is going to help us in terms of growing our confidence.”

On the performance of Tony Alfaro: “He’s just not overwhelmed by the situa-tion. I think you could see that one of his attributes in the back is he’s techni-cally very good. He’s good with the ball and he’s a good passer. His position-ing is also solid, I think he’s going to be a good defender in this league.”

Forward Jordan Morris:

On scoring right after Toronto FC took the lead: “It was good to get a goal back right after they scored, and it was a great ball by Joevin [Jones] so all credit to him. It was a good response to bring some life back into the game.” On the upcoming stretch of games: “We’ve got West Ham first, so that should be fun. Then we’ve got to get back it in training and get ready because these Western Conference games are really important. We’ve got to start climbing the table and beating these teams will hopefully help a lot so we’ve got a good stretch coming up which is exciting because it’s a good opportunity to climb the table.”

SOUNDERS ADD THREE FOR FRIENDLYSounders FC today announced that it has recalled defender Jimmy Ockford from his current loan with NASL side New York Cosmos for tonight’s friendly against West Ham United at CenturyLink Field (7:30 p.m. PT / JOEtv, KIRO Radio 97.3 FM, El Rey 1360 AM). Additionally, Sounders FC 2 defender Mi-chael Nelson and midfielder Zach Mathers have signed short-term agreements with the club and are also available for tonight’s match.

Ockford, 24, was originally drafted by Seattle in the Second Round (21st over-all) in the 2014 MLS SuperDraft. He made one MLS appearance for the Rave Green in 2015, starting and playing all 90 minutes in a road match against the Philadelphia Union. Ockford is set to return to the Cosmos.

Nelson, 21, has 12 appearances for S2, recording one assist as rookie in 2016. He was selected by Sounders FC in the Fourth Round (77th overall) in the 2016 MLS SuperDraft in January. The Old Dominion product earned First Team All-Conference USA and NSCAA First Team All-Southwest Region honors in his senior season in 2015.

This is the third short-term agreement for Mathers, with the S2 rookie having previously been called-up for both Sounders FC Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup matches versus Kitsap on June 15 and Real Salt Lake on June 28. Mathers has appeared in 12 games for S2 this season, recording one goal and two assists. The rookie was selected in the Second Round (35th overall) in the 2016 MLS SuperDraft this January out of Duke University, where he was a three-time All-ACC selection and led the Blue Devils with eight goals and eight assists in in 2015.

MLS clubs may sign players from their USL affiliate to short-term agreements (up to four-day contracts) for CONCACAF Champions League, AMWAY Cana-dian Championship, Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup and exhibition matches. An MLS club may sign a player to a maximum of four short-term agreements each season (maximum of 16 days).

SOUNDERS FC EARNS ROAD POINTJordan Morris scored his team-leading sixth goal of the season with a sec-ond-half equalizer as Sounders FC (5-9-2, 17 points) drew 1-1 with Toronto FC (5-6-5, 20 points) Saturday evening at BMO Field. Moments after the Reds went up 1-0 via a strike from Jordan Hamilton, Morris equalized on a counter-attack sprung by defender Joevin Jones, giving Seattle its second road result of the week across all competitions.

Toronto FC went up 1-0 in the 60th minute courtesy of a goal from Hamilton after Sebastian Giovinco got behind the Seattle defense for a one-on-one opportunity with goalkeeper Stefan Frei. After Frei thwarted Giovinco’s attempt, the ball fell to Hamilton for an easy conversion into the open net. Morris responded moments later for his team-leading sixth goal of the season. Jones sent a long pass from the midfield line into the 18-yard-box that found Morris, who was out-numbered three-to-one by the Toronto defense. The rook-ie turned inside and fired a bending right-footed shot that snuck its way inside the far post to even the match at one goal apiece.

Seattle applied heavy pressure inside Toronto’s area in the waning minutes of the match, including a dangerous cross from Morris that was cleared off the line, but the score-line remained deadlocked at 1-1 to give Seattle its second road draw of the 2016 MLS campaign. Forward Clint Dempsey and defender Brad Evans were absent from Seattle’s matchday 18-man roster Saturday evening. Dempsey was given the week-end off by the technical staff following his Semifinal Round run with the U.S. National Team at the 2016 Copa America Centenario, while Evans remained in Seattle due to a calf strain suffered in last weekend’s match against New York City FC.

SOUNDERS FC HISTORY

HEAD COACH SIGI SCHMIDNamed the first Head Coach of Seattle Sounders FC on December 16, 2008, Sigi Schmid is the winningest coach in MLS history. Since 1999, Schmid’s teams have won nine major titles, including two MLS Cups.

A two-time MLS Coach of the Year, Schmid has led Sounders FC to seven-consecutive appearances in the MLS Cup Playoffs, marking the second-longest active streak while nearing the record for most consecutive postseason appearances by an expansion team.

Schmid also guided Sounders FC to a record three-straight Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup titles, becoming the first team in 42 years to win back-to-back championships.

Schmid joined Sounders FC in its inaugural campaign after leading the Co-lumbus Crew to its first MLS Cup and Supporters’ Shield, earning MLS Coach of the Year honors in 2008. From 1999 through 2004, Schmid’s L.A. Galaxy teams won four major competitions: the 2002 MLS Cup and Supporters’ Shield, the 2001 U.S. Open Cup and the 2001 CONCACAF Champions Cup. He was voted the MLS Coach of the Year in his first season, 1999. Altogether, his Gal-axy teams were 79-53-32 and reached the MLS Cup final four times, winning three division crowns.

Schmid has twice served as the U.S. U-20 National Team head coach, most re-cently in 2005 at the FIFA World Championships. Schmid first forged a winning tradition at his alma mater, UCLA. After serving as an assistant, he was elevat-ed to head coach of the Bruins in 1980, beginning a 19-year run at the helm. He claimed three national titles (1985, 1990, 1997) and was named national coach of the year following the 1997 championship. His UCLA teams accumu-lated a record of 322-64-33. Schmid ranks No. 1 in MLS career victories (227) and games coached (500). Overall, Schmid’s record in MLS is 227-162-113. His combined postseason win total (26) is the second-highest in MLS history.
