SCOUTING UTAH STATE: Utah State comes into Thurs-day’s game with a 10-8 record after defeating Louisi-ana Tech last Saturday, 69-65, to improve its confer-ence record to 2-2. The Aggies are scoring 67.6 points per game and giving up 64.4 points per contest. As a team, Utah State is shooting 47.5 percent from the field, including 38.7 percent from behind the three-point line, and 68.9 percent from the free throw line. Preston Medlin leads the team in scoring, averaging 14.4 points per game as he is shooting 49.7 percent from the field, including 47.7 percent from behind the three-point line. Brockeith Pane is contributing 12.4 points and 3.7 assists per game, while Kyisean Reed is averaging 10.4 points and 4.9 rebounds per game, plus he is shooting 61.5 percent from the field. Morgan Grim leads the team in rebounding with 6.8 boards per game to go along with 9.9 points per con-test.

SEATTLE U VS. UTAH STATE: This is the 29th meeting all-time between Seattle University and Utah State, but only the second game between the two schools in almost 36 years. The first meeting took place Dec. 1, 1956, in the Idaho State College Invitational in Po-catello, Idaho, a 66-59 Seattle U victory. Utah State won the next meeting on Dec. 3, 1959, in Seattle, 85-73. The two schools met twice per season every year from 1965-66 through 1975-76, when Seattle U swept Utah State (75-66 in Seattle, 79-73 in Logan). Utah State’s last victories over Seattle U before this season came in the 1974-75 season (83-72 in Logan, 63-61 in Seattle). Utah State leads the overall se-ries, 15-13, but Seattle U holds an 8-5 advantage in Seattle.

SCANNING THE RADIO DIAL: For the third straight sea-son, Seattle U men’s basketball games will be aired on 710 ESPN Seattle, with Dave Grosby and Gary Hill, Jr., providing the play-by-play descriptions of the ac-tion from courtside.

JOINING THE WAC: Seattle University is in its final year as a Division I independent before officially joining the Western Athletic Conference July 1, 2012. The Red-hawks will be part of the WAC in 17 of the 19 sports offered at Seattle U, with men’s soccer and men’s swimming staying in the Mountain Pacific Sports Fed-eration. As of right now, Seattle U will face the follow-ing schools in conference play beginning next season: Denver, Idaho, Louisiana Tech, New Mexico State, San Jose State, Texas-Arlington, Texas-San Antonio, Texas State, and Utah State. Boise State will be rejoining the WAC as a non-football member in July 2013.

IT STARTS WITH AB: After passing the 1,000-point mark Nov. 22 at Montana State, senior Aaron Brous-sard is working his way up the Seattle U all-time scoring list. He currently has 1,261 career points, currently 18th on the all-time list. He needs eight points to move into 17th place past Jeffrey McDaniel, who scored 1,268 career points from 2002 to 2006. Broussard also has 146 career steals, passing Mike Boxley into fifth place on the career steals list. Brous-sard was named the Jesuit Player of the Week by the Jesuit Basketball Spotlight after his all-tournament performance in the Elgin Baylor Classic. He was also the College Sports Madness Independent Player of the Week after averaging 25.0 points and 9.5 rebounds per game against Nebraska Omaha and San Jose State.

RETURN TO FORM: Two Redhawks who had not played in a collegiate basketball game since the 2009-10 season are having significant impacts on this year’s Seattle U squad. Sophomore Clarence Trent sat out the 2010-11 campaign after transfering from the University of Washington. This season, he is second on the team in scoring with 10.4 points per game and third in rebounding with 4.7 boards per contest. After Seattle U seemingly did not have many dunks last season, Trent has added athleticism and excitement to the program this year. He has reached double figures in scoring nine times, including 16-point efforts at Portland State and at Arkansas State as well as three 15-point performances. Eric Wallace, a senior transfer from DePaul, spent the 2010-11 season rehabbing after suffering a severe leg injury during preseason workouts. Since coming west, Wallace has averaged 9.6 points and a team-high 7.7 rebounds per game. He scored 19 points against Nebraska Omaha and 18 points in games at Montana State and at Utah Valley. Wallace has notched two double-doubles so far this season: 12 points and 15 rebounds against Stanford, and 12 points and 13 rebounds at Arkansas State.

BACK AT JIMMY’S: The Cameron Dollar Coaches Show returns to Jimmy’s on Broadway Monday, Jan. 30, beginning at 9 p.m. Hosted by Dave Grosby and Gary Hill, Jr., the show features interviews with Coach Dol-lar, a selected player, and a selected member of the basketball staff. The show will also be broadcast on 710 ESPN Seattle Monday, Jan. 23, but that will be a taped show as the team travels to California to prepare for its game at UC Irvine the next day.

head coach cameron dollarthird season/ucla ‘97

Cameron Dollar is in his third season as head coach at Seattle University. In just a short span of time, he has shown why many college basketball writers consider him one of the rising stars in the coaching industry.

Seattle U picked up 11 victories during the 2010-11 season, including the team’s second straight victory over Oregon State and a road victory at ACC school Virginia. The Redhawks also played a tight game at Pac-10 school Stanford and put up its best performance against Washington since starting the reclassification process in front of over 11,000 fans at KeyArena. With Dollar at the helm, Seattle U was invited to participate in the 2K Sports

Classic Benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer, opening the season at the University of Maryland. The Redhawks were also chosen for the ESPN BracketBuster series of games, defeating Northern Illinois on the road.

Using an up-tempo style with aggressive defense, Dollar led Seattle U to a 17-14 record in 2009-10, mak-ing the Redhawks the first team to post a winning record playing a full Division I schedule in its first year as a Division I counter. The team started to gain national recognition after a 77-74 victory at Utah, and then made history later in the year with a 99-48 win at Oregon State, the worst home loss ever for the Beavers. Dollar and his squad also defended Elgin Baylor Court at KeyArena during its first year of existance, finishing with a 10-3 record at home, including exciting victories over Fresno State, Weber State, and UC Irvine. Seattle U won eight of its last nine games, posting last-second road wins at Portland State and at San Jose State in the process.

He served seven years as an asssistant coach at the University of Washington before coming to Seattle U. As the top assistant for Lorenzo Romar at Washington, he helped the Huskies win their first Pac-10 outright regu-lar season championship since 1953 in the 2008-09 season. Washington advanced to the semifinals of the Pac-10 Tournament and to the second round of the 2009 NCAA Tournament.

In 2006, Dollar helped guide Washington to a 26-7 record. The Huskies made back-to-back Sweet 16 appear-ances for the first time ever. He was pivotal in the Huskies’ run to their first Pac-10 Tournament championship in 2005 and first ever No. 1 seed into the NCAA Tournament. UW finished with a 29-6 record, tying the school record for wins in a season.

In 2004, the Huskies advanced to the championship game of the Pac-10 Tournament and competed in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1999. UW swept all three meetings with highly ranked Arizona and capped the regular season with a win over No. 1 and undefeated Stanford.

Prior to his arrival at UW, Dollar served three years as an assistant coach on Romar’s Saint Louis University staff. He helped the Billikens to a three-year record of 51-44 (.537), including a 2000 Conference USA Tour-nament championship that secured the league’s automatic NCAA berth.

Dollar began his coaching career as an assistant on the staff of head coach Pat Douglass at UC Irvine in 1997.

He became the nation’s youngest head coach in 1998 when, at age 22, he took the reins of the Southern California College program in Costa Mesa, Calif. The Vanguards, who returned just six players from the previous season, posted an 11-22 record in Dollar’s only season, but recorded wins over NAIA Top 25 teams Westmont and Azusa Pacific.

As a player, Dollar lettered four seasons at UCLA before graduating in 1997. He has chosen to remain in Seat-tle, the site of the Bruins’ 1995 NCAA Championship victory. UCLA defeated Arkansas 89-78 at the Kingdome.

A four-year letterman at UCLA from 1994-97, Dollar achieved national recognition in 1995 as a pivotal player in UCLA’s NCAA championship season when he took over for injured starter Tyus Edney in the title game. In Dollar’s final three collegiate seasons, the Bruins won the NCAA title and reached the Sweet 16 and Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament. Dollar averaged 5.0 points and 3.7 assists per game during his four-year career.

Dollar is a native of Atlanta, where his father, Don, was the long-time coach at Clarkston High School and is now serving as one of his assistant coaches at Seattle U. Cameron and his wife, Maureen, live in Seattle. They have three children: Jalen (born April 26, 2005), Giselle (born Feb. 12, 2007), and Jason (born Dec. 23, 2008).
