GRADE 6 LOCKDOWN HOMEWORK
ENGLISH ACTIVITIES
READING COMPREHENSION – READ THE FOLLOWING FOLKTALE AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS THAT FOLLOW
A water bearer called Tshepiso lived in the village of Osaka. He had the important task of bringing fresh
water to his family. He carried two large pots, on a pole, across his shoulders. One pot had a crack
while the other was a perfect, proud pot. At the end of the walk, the cracked pot arrived with only half the
water. For a full two years this went on every day with Tshepiso bringing fresh water in the pots to his
family. They were not very happy with the half full, cracked pot.
Now the perfect pot was proud of its accomplishments in carrying out the job for which it had been
made. This pot felt as important as a human being and selfishly ignored the other pot. Its boasting made
the cracked pot feel ashamed of its own imperfection and misery, because it leaked half the water from
the stream to the village. The cracked pot asked the perfect pot to help it mend its crack, but the perfect
pot was always too busy.
After two years the cracked pot expressed his feelings of being useless and it spoke to Tshepiso. “I am
ashamed of myself because of the crack in my side; it leaks water all the way to your house. I have no
value and should be thrown away.”
Tshepiso felt sad, he did not know how miserable the cracked pot felt. He smiled and gently said, “Did
you notice that there are pumpkins only on your side of the path, and not on the other pot’s side? I
always knew about your weakness and so I planted pumpkin seeds on your side of the path. You have
been watering the seeds every day. Without your weakness, I could not have grown the pumpkins.”

TERM 2 UNIT 5
The human cost of unfair trade and work and exploitation.
When people are poor, they will work for low wages under poor conditions. Some employers or traders take advantage of this situation in order to make a large
profit. When people take unfair advantage of others in this way, we say that they exploit them. Many poor workers, farmers and children throughout the world are exploited.
When people treat others in a selfish and unfair way, we say they are exploiting people. Below are some of the ways people are exploited in the work place.
They are paid low wagesThey work very long hoursThey work in unhealthy and dangerous conditionsThere are often not enough or no safety equipment for workers. E.g. gloves/masksThere is no paid sick leave for workersWomen are often paid less than men who do the same work.
Child workers
In some countries children work in factories and on farms. Companies pay children lower wages than adults. Employers who use children to work say they are forced to use child workers, because the get very low prices for their goods and child labour is cheap.
Children often work with dangerous tools- which can result in serious injuries. They are sometimes required to work with harmful chemicals. They have to carry heavy loadsThey do not go to school, unable to get an education.Get paid very little money for the work they do.
Case study: Exhausted worker sleeps in her break.
Mae-Ling is a worker in a Chinese Sweatshop. She is so tired every day that she sleeps at her work station during her 10-minute morning break. Many sweatshops are in poor countries. They supply large companies based in rich countries, where many of their goods are sold.
The sleeping Mae-Ling aged 17 had this to say. “I work from 7:45 am to 10:50 Pm. Many of us are crammed into one small, very hot room. We are not allowed to talk or listen to music nor go to the toilet except in or short break. We sleep at the factory in dormitories; there are 14 of us in one room. We wash in a bucket. I have been working since the age of 15. I see my parents every second week, sometimes once a month. As it is costly to travel back and forth.
I could work fewer hours, but if I do not work the overtime, then the basic wage I will earn will not be enough to feed my family. I do not have a choice but to work these long hours so that I can support my family. My parents are farmers without jobs and I have 3 younger siblings. So I do not have a choice but to push myself to continue working long hours, even though I am extremely exhausted.”
Activity 8- Read the above case study and answer the following:
Who is being exploited?_________________________________________________________
How is she being exploited?__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
How does Mae-Ling’s family situation and problems, lead her to be exploited?__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
How would you feel if you were being exploited in this way?___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Exhausted sweatshop workers asleep at their workstations, during their 10 minute morning break.
On the left is what looks like inside a small sweatshop. These women usually work long hours, for a small wage in this small space.
The goods that are made in these sweatshops or factories will be much cheaper than the goods from factories that practice fair trade. Which goods will you buy? (from the sweatshop or fair trade factory) . Why would you buy these goods?
