Sebago Lakes Area Guide 2012-2013
About Sebago LakeThe Native American name Sebago means “great stretch of water,” an apt descrip-tion of Maine’s second largest lake. Sebago Lake is 8 miles wide, 10 miles long, and has 995 million gallons of water! Sebago has excellent water quality and is the source of the City of Portland’s drinking water; therefore, the southernmost part of the lake is restricted from any boating and swimming.
Six towns have shore frontage on Sebago Lake, but Sebago’s watershed extends from Bethel to Standish and covers 436 square miles. It is a 35-mile drive around the lake via Routes 302, 114 and 35.
The lake is known for its great fishing throughout the year. It is home of the land-locked salmon, as well as trout, bass and many other kinds of fish. Ice fishing is popular - there is even a mid-winter ice fishing tournament for hearty souls!
Long Lake, Brandy Pond, Crooked River and the Songo River all flow into Sebago Lake and provide a 43-mile length of continuous waterway for all kinds of water recreation. Outflow is primarily handled through the Presumpscot River, which flows to the Atlantic Ocean. Because of the lake’s size, many large boats cruise the waterway, but there are numerous coves and basins which allow for quieter kinds of activity such as canoeing and kayaking. Among these diverse areas are Sebago Basin, Harmon’s Beach, Wards Cove, North Sebago Shores, Thompson’s Point, Sebago Inlet, Kettle Cove, the Dingley Islands and Jordan Bay.
There is an 8-mile long peninsula known as Raymond Cape, which juts into the lake. From Raymond Cape Road there is access to a ferry (May-October) that ser-vices Frye Island, a large, seasonally-populated island with a golf course, beaches and a restaurant.

The Songo River Queen II
Songo River Queen II offers daily cruises on Long Lake in season; weekend cruises off-season and private charters from Mother’s Day to Halloween. Ticket pricing and cruise schedules are at www.songoriverqueen.net or call 207-693-6861.
Naples is considered the “Heart of the Lakes Region” for its beautiful downtown causeway area which runs between picturesque Long Lake to the east and Brandy Pond to the west. Brandy Pond is connected to Long Lake by the Chute River and to Sebago Lake via the Songo River and the old canal’s last hand-operated lock, circa 1830. This 43-mile continuous waterway provides unparalleled recreation opportunities for residents and visitors alike.

A Year-Round Treasure... Sebago Lake State Park
On the north shore of Sebago Lake, in the towns of Naples and Casco, is beautiful Sebago Lake State Park. Open since 1938, this 1,400 acre park features a sandy beach, woodland walking trails, ponds, bogs, and a river. The diverse habitat allows for a great variety of plant and animal life. These natural features plus well-equipped facilities (including wheelchair-accessible restrooms), 250 campsites, family and large group picnic areas, a playground, concessions and two boat launches make Sebago Lake State Park a popular destination for day visitors and campers.
The park is renowned for swimming, boating, sport fishing, camping and water sports. Power boaters, sailors, kayakers, canoers and anglers enjoy the Songo River and the historic Songo Lock connecting Sebago and Long Lakes. Songo Lock is the last existing lock of 28 built for the Cumberland and Oxford Canal, a 50-mile corridor to the sea. It is still hand-operated and provides a fascinating point of interest for all who come to the Lakes Region.
Wooded areas offer a respite from the sun and activity on the beaches. Whether hiking on marked trails or bicycling on park roads, visitors find many ways to enjoy the outdoors. An active interpretive program in summer enhances enjoy-ment of the park for children and adults through ranger-led activities, programs in the amphithe-ater and guided hikes. The park offers all-season enjoyment for pedestrians. In winter, visitors will discover six miles of groomed trails that provide a peaceful sanctuary for ski touring or long walks and quiet nature observation.
To reach Sebago Lake State Park from Portland and points east and south: turn left onto Songo School Road off Rt. 302 in Casco; follow signs. From Naples, take Rt. 114 and turn left at the State Park sign. One mile up on left.
For camping reservations June 15-Labor Day, call (in Maine) 1-800-332-1501; (outside Maine) 207-287-3824. To reach the park directly, in sea-son, call 693-6231; to inquire about the summer lock schedule call 693-6613.

Remember to check for ticks daily on your-self, your children and pets, especially after outdoor activity in the months of May, June & July.Deer ticks are smaller than dog ticks and the nymph is only about the size of a poppy seed. Pay attention to favorite tick spots – backs of knees, groin, waist, arm-pits and scalp.
To remove a tick, use a pair of fine pointed tweezers, grasp it as close to the skin as possible and pull straight up with a steady motion. For more in-formation and educational links, visit the website above.

Sebago Lakes Area Guide 2012-2013
Let’s Take A Hike! It’s always fun to get out and experience the natural beauty of our Lakes Region on foot. There are hikes for all ages and abilities. Here are a few of our favorites ...
Douglas Mountain 2.3 miles Douglas Mountain in Sebago gives you some aerobic activity and very rewarding views at the top. The path starts up under tall pines, with the scent of their fallen needles crushed underfoot. It then winds over gnarly roots and spongy moss, around ancient glacial boulders and past stands of sprightly wildflowers until you reach the bald granite outcropping at the top. Spread out before you is your reward: the peaks of the White Mountains to the west and the vast, sparkling waters of Sebago Lake to the east. There is even a stone tower with an observation platform where you’ll find a map telling you what you’re looking at. The Nature Conservancy maintains a three-quarter mile nature trail at the summit, with identifying labels for plants and trees.
To get to Douglas Mountain, take Rt. 11 & 114 south from the center of Naples. Drive about 8 miles then turn right onto Long Hill Road, right onto Rt. 107 North, and left onto Douglas Hill Road. There is limited parking at the end of the road by the trailhead.
Bald Pate Mountain 2 milesBald Pate Mountain (about 1,000 feet), an interesting mountain with a double peak, was probably not well known by many hikers until it became the Bald Pate Mountain Preserve. It’s a two-mile round-trip hike on a well-marked trail. On the first peak, you’ll be treated to fine westerly views toward Pleasant Mountain. At the main summit, there is a registration box and a monstrous rock outcrop -- the Bald Pate -- from which there are broad views of Sebago Lake.
To get to the trailhead, take Rt. 302 W from Naples 2.5 miles to Perley Road on the left. Turn right on Fosterville Road to Route 107. Turn left and look for the sign for the Bald Pate Mountain Preserve, with parking on your left.

Rattlesnake MountainThis is an easy 1/2 mile hike from the parking lot to the best view that looks over Panther Pond toward Raymond. This short walk with rewarding views is a good hike for small children. Trail bears left where there appears to be a choice (right is a logging road).
The trail begins on the left side of Route 85 heading north out of Raymond (Bri-Mar Trail). Parking lot is under 2 miles from Crescent Lake boat launch.
Enjoy Windham’s six Nature/Wildlife Preserves. Maps and directions at the Chamber Information Centers.• Claman Bird Sanctuary - Nature trails, best high bush blueberry picking.
• Deer Hollow Sanctuary - Nature trails, mud pond, observation platform, fishing.
• Otterbrook Sanctuary - Nature & hiking trails, observation platform, XC skiing.
• Lowell Preserve - Hiking trails, spring fishing, nearby playground.
• Dundee Park - Swimming, picnic area, volleyball & basketball courts, restrooms.
• Black Brook Preserve - Walking, x-country skiing & snowmobile trails.
Mountain Division Trail Relatively flat, wooded 3.7 mile walk through Windham, Gorham & Standish. Trail is open for hiking, biking, horseback, fishing, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. Dogs are allowed on leash. Quarter-mile markers help you judge distance as this is not a loop trail, but rather a straight out and back.
Standish trailhead is on Rt. 35 between Rts. 237 & 114 at Johnson Field. The Wind-ham trailhead is on Gambo Road, a left turn off River Road. Access road to parking lot is .4 mi. down Gambo.

The Maine Wildlife Park in Gray offers visitors a great opportunity to see many wild animals in a naturalized setting. The park, located on Route 26, is home to a variety of native animals who, for one reason or another, cannot be returned to the wild. Operated by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife,
the park is open to the public from mid-April through Veteran’s Day. An interpretative center offers interactive exhibits and displays to increase public awareness of Maine’s wildlife resources and the Department’s efforts to assist with conservation of our precious wildlife resources.(www.mainewildlifepark.com)

Are you covered with confidence?
Wildlife WatchingMoose are most likely spotted during the late spring to mid-summer and the month of September. Early morning and evening and noon to 2 pm seem to be the best times of day for spotting these large animals, when they come to the edge of lakes and ponds to eat tender woodland and aquatic vegetation - up to 40 to 50 lbs a day! Moose are the tallest land mammal in North America, over seven feet tall.
During your search, keep in mind that moose have poor eyesight, but a very keen sense of hearing and smell. Stay away from females with calves in tow, and males during mating season, mid-September to mid-October. Look for moose tracks on dirt roads - a cloven impression about 5 inches long and a running stride that may be over ten feet.
Drive cautiously in moose country, as these creatures are often seen ambling along roadways. Yes, they have even been seen trying to cross busy Route 302! Keep a sharp eye out for the moose’s cousin, the white-tailed deer, which can be seen in fields and forest clearings, particularly at dawn and dusk. The more elusive wild animals you may encounter in the Sebago Lakes region include fishers, red fox, coyotes, beavers, porcupine and black bear.

Day Trips ‘Round The LakeOne of the most fun things to do when visiting the Sebago Lakes Region is to set out on a day trip to explore the area’s unique features. Here are two trips where you can discover the natural beauty of our region and its unique retail shops and attractions.
Start at our Windham Information Center, corner of Rts. 115, 35 & 302, with a list of member businesses and their locations as well as public attractions.
TRIP I: Naples - Sebago - Limington - Limerick - Newfield - StandishFollow Rt. 302 west to Rts. 11 & 114 south in Naples, winding along the west-ern shore of Sebago Lake, then heading inland to explore the rural treasures of northern York County.
Turn right onto Rts. 11 & 114 from the Cause-way and follow through North and East Sebago. At about 10 miles, Rts. 11 & 114 split. Turn right on Rt. 11. This road joins Rt. 113 after about 7 miles. Turn left here and follow to where Rt. 11 splits with Rt. 113. Turn right on Rt. 11 and go several more miles to junction with Rt. 25 in Limington. Cross Rt. 25 and in 8 miles or so you’ll be in Limerick Village. Turn left onto Main Street at the top of the hill, then right at the other end of Main St., about 1/2 mile, staying on
Rt. 11. In 4 miles you’ll see signs for Willowbrook Village, a right turn on Elm St.
The return trip takes you back on Rt. 11 to the junction with Rt. 25 in Limington. Turn right on Rt. 25 and go about 8 miles to Standish Village. Turn left on Rt. 35. Cross Rt. 114 at Sebago Lake Village and head up the east side of Sebago Lake. Rt. 35 ends at the junction of Rt. 302 in North Windham. Continue across the intersection to Rt. 115 to begin the second trip.
TRIP II: Gray - New Gloucester - Casco - Raymond
Head east on Rt. 115 toward Gray. Turn left on Rt. 100 in center of town and follow to Gloucester Hill Rd (R). Turn right on Penny Rd. and left when it ends at Intervale to view the rural beauty and historic homes of New Gloucester Village. When Intervale comes up to Gloucester Hill, turn left down the hill, then right on Bennett Rd . Follow to its end at Rt. 26, by Sabbathday Pond. Turn right and follow to intersection with Rt. 11 S. Go 10 miles. Turn left at Quaker Ridge Rd. Scenic area at 1/2 mile and at 1 mi. an optional left to the top of Hacker’s Hill. At 4.5 miles, turn left on Rt. 302 in South Casco Village to return to Windham, about 6 miles, or right to go to Naples, about 5 miles.

Pleasant Mountain on Moose Pond in Bridgton is a destination for sports enthusiasts throughout the year. Shawnee Peak is popular with skiers and mountain bikers. You can hike up the mountain on a variety of trails and enjoy spectacular views of the New Hampshire Presidential Range to the west and, on a clear day, Portland’s skyline to the east. Ice fishing on the pond is a fun activity, too!

Babb’s Covered Bridge in Windham is the only covered bridge in Cumberland County. It is in a beautiful location and has long been a favorite subject of artists and photographers. Families enjoy picnics, swimming and fishing by the bridge. Look for Covered Bridge sign on the right, going east on River Road from Rt. 302.
