What is music?

Music is an art form whose medium is

sound. Common elements of music are pitch(which governs melody and harmony),

rhythm (and its associated concepts tempo,meter, and articulation), dynamics, and the

sonic qualities of timbre and texture.

The creation, performance, significance, andeven the definition of music vary according toculture and social context. Music ranges from

strictly organized compositions, throughimprovisational music to aleatoric forms.Music can be divided into genres andsubgenres, although the dividing lines and

relationships between music genres are oftensubtle, sometimes open to individualinterpretation, and occasionally controversial.

To many people in many cultures music is an

important part of their way of life. Greek

philosophers and ancient Indian philosophers

defined music as tones ordered horizontally as

melodies and vertically as harmonies.

Common sayings such as "the harmony of the

spheres" and "it is music to my ears" point tothe notion that music is often ordered and

pleasant to listen to.

Prehistoric eras

-Ancient music can only be imagined by scholars, based onfindings from a range of paleolithic sites, such as bones in

which lateral holes have been pierced; these are usuallyidentified as flutes.

- Music and theatre scholars studying the history and

anthropology of Semitic and early Judeo-Christian culture,have also discovered common links between theatrical andmusical activity in the classical cultures of the Hebrews withthose of the later cultures of the Greeks and Romans.

Indian classical music is one of the oldest musical traditions in

the world. The Indus Valley civilization has sculptures that

show dance and old musical instruments, like the seven holed

flute.

Asian music covers the music cultures of Arabia, Central Asia,

East Asia, South Asia, and Southeast Asia. Chinese classical

music, the traditional art or court music of China, has a history

stretching over around three thousand years.

20th and 21st century music

With 20th century music, there was a vast increase in musiclistening as the radio gained popularity and phonographswere used to replay and distribute music.

Jazz evolved and became a significant genre of music over the

course of the 20th century, and during the second half of thatcentury, rock music did the same.

Jazz is an American musical art form that originated in thebeginning of the 20th century in African Americancommunities from a confluence of African and European

music traditions, while rock music is a genre of popular musicthat developed in the 1960s from 1950s rock and roll, andcountry music.

Singapore has an urban musical scene, and is

a center for rock, punk and other genres in the

region. The 1960s produced bands like The

Crescendos with hit songs like Mr Twister.
