It will be held June 8-12 at the Fontana Village Resort ( http://www.fontanavillage.com/ ) near Rob- binsville, N.C. Calvin Underwood made the announcement on behalf of John, Vic and the team at the ‘COG at 10,000’ Rally on June 5 at Frisco, Colorado. The team appropriately named the rally ‘Shiftin and Grinnin’’. And so it shall be. This is the perfect area to have our Na- tional. If you look at your map of Western North Carolina or click on this link http://home.nps.gov/applications/parks/grsm/ppMaps/ACFA653.pdf and find Hwy 28 and the Fontana Lake dam, you will quickly see that Fontana Village Resort is just south of the dam. Now, while you are looking, see Deals Gap (Tail of the Dragon), Cherohala Skyway, the Blue Ridge Parkway and all those twisty roads in between. Now, imagine you riding those roads, seeing those sights and visiting all the interesting and fun places that are within a 100 mile radius reaching not only into all parts of Western North Caro- lina, but also into Tennessee and Georgia as well. Fontana Village Resort offers accommodations for anyone’s preference and budget in- cluding camping, cabins, houseboats and the lodge. It has two restaurants and banquet facilities to accommodate as many as show up. There are two swimming pools; a game room; disc golf; putt putt; horseback riding; bicycling; a playground; and more for the entire family. There is also a community building which will serve as COG Central during the rally. It’s a great setup for a rally. In addition to the great roads, area attractions include: the Great Smoky Mountain Na- tional Park, the Nantahala Outdoor Center (whitewater rafting); Cherokee; Gatlinburg, TN, the Honda Hoot in Knoxville; Asheville, NC; and much more. Our website will have links to all the attractions. The COG on-line website will have all the details soon. Registration will be handled for the first time on-line by COGMOS. So, stay tuned. The 14th Annual Run with the Wolf Rally was held on April 25-27 at the High

Valley Resort in Suches, GA.

On Friday night, the group got

together to talk about the new COG-Online.com, COGmos mem-

bership systems, and to talk about safety . An open discussion on

tech issues followed.

While the forecast for Saturday was ominous as clouds gathered, it turned out to be a great day

for riding as the showers were few and very scattered.

To go back a bit, Rallymeister

John Carver was informed by High Valley Resort 12 days in ad-

vance of the rally that they no longer did food service. Not to be deterred, John made ar-

rangements to purchase steaks and potatoes. Reid Yeargan, the

S .GA AAD, brought t he beans. Calvin Underwood, Bob

Sherwood and Gary Norton made a special ‘Cole Slaw’ run on

Saturday (which included a ride across the Cherohala Skyway) to bring back the bags of cabbage/

cole slaw. Amy Lane, Lynne Jones, Lucia Perez, and Reid

Yeargan prepared the steaks, baked potatoes, and cole

slaw. Reid Yeargan and John fired up the grill, and ‘everyone’

cooked their own steaks on the grill. This illustrates SECOG team work at its best.

Following the delicious meal, John

distributed a ‘Survey’ to the group to get input about what they

would like to see at fu-ture events. John will be com-

piling the results and a report will be used by the SECOG leader-ship team in planning.

Special Awards were presented,

in adsentia, to David Hicks, Mari-etta, GA, for his services as the

SECOG webmaster and for man-

aging our official e-mail communi-cations and to Larry Buck, Boca

Raton, FL, for his service as the SECOG AD 2004-2007.

Recognitions were given to Tyler

Pigott for the highest COG #7775 and to Ken and Marcia Ford, Bartow, FL, for the lowest

COG #354. Paul Heydemann, Miami, FL and SFL AAD, came the

‘longest distance’. Rich and Dona Riczinger, Richmond, VA and

COG Tech Director, came the longest distance ‘two up’. The

‘youngest’ COG member operator was Jennifer Simons, Augustus, GA. And the Youngest Attendee

was Mathew McClure, grandson of John and Peggy Youhouse,

Clarksville, TN.

The ‘Hard Luck’ award went to Sandi Hodge who tangled with

the ‘Wolf’ at a hairpen turn on Wolf Pen Gap Rd. Sandi, of Yu-lee, FL and her GPZ1000 ran

onto some gravel on a left hand 180 degree hairpin and went

down an embankment. While Sandi was a bit bruised and sore,

she was OK. Her bike was ren-dered un-ridable. A close run-

nerup was Eddie Minter of San-ford, FL., also tangled with a left-hander. Eddie also was a bit

bruised and sore, but declared himself OK. His Concours sus-

tained cosmetic damage but he rode it home.

We had lots of door prizes, in-cluding a Tourmaster jacket, hel-

met, Kawasaki backpack, New Enough gift certificates and many more. Gary Norton, SC AAD,

teamed up with Rallymeister John Carver to give out the door

prizes. McClure Youhouse, the Youhouse granddaughter, pulled

the winning names for John.

The 50/50 was won by Neil and

Jenny Wells, Jamestown, TN. The group unanimously agreed that

house 50% would go to David Hicks, SECOG Webmaster's fa-

vorite charity, Multiple Sclerosis.

Rallymeister John thanked every-one for attending. On Sunday morning, everyone started to

pack up and head back home. With them, they took lots

of good memories of the people and the rides.

Submitted by John Carver and

Calvin Underwood

Special note from ‘Run with the Wolf ’ ral lymeister (John

Carver): The success of Run with the Wolf 2008 is due to the back-

ing of a great bunch of people which I could not have done with-

out: Vic Salisbury provided awards, t-shirts, many of the door prizes, and personal direction,

Bob Sherwood provided door prizes, Calvin Underwood pro-

vided highly valuable direction and assisted with obtaining food,

Gary Norton assisted with obtain-ing food and door prize selec-

tions, Reid Yeargan provided on-site support and assistance in many areas, Lynne Jones, Amy

Lane, and Reid Yeargan for kitchen support, Lucia Perez for

assisting with High Valley Resort, and Rick Ward for correcting of

my forgetting the COG ban-ners. As for my contribution, I just

happen to know a pretty good butcher. :-)

Thanks to all those who helped, I appreciate it greatly. I doubt

that I listed all that contributed, for that I apologize and Thank

You again. John Carver, Rallymeister

“The story behind the forgotten

COG banners. Jeanne, one of the owners of High Valley Resort

was cleaning up just before the church service and noticed them.

She was taking them down when someone coming for the church service noticed her actions and

stated he was my neighbor. The "neighbor" was actually as stated,

Rick Ward lives two doors from me, and he brought me the ban-

ners. Talk about a small world.

Note from the Editor: This newsletter has been sent via e-mail to all COGers with e-mail addresses. Hard copies were mailed to non-e-mail mem-bers only . E-mailed newslet-ters save your volunteer editor time and resources. If you have e-mail, it is important to keep your ‘contact info’, e.g. e-mail address, up-to-date. Please make all corrections on your COGMOS account (see March, 2008 newsletter for instruction) or w i th Car l Met ler [email protected] who maintains the central mem-bership lists. I don’t mind mail-ing a hard copy to e-mail’less members. If you want a hard copy of the newsletter, e-mail Calvin. Thanks for your under-standing and co-operation.

The North Georgia COG Members have a regularly scheduled dinner at

Rocco's Pub in Marietta, GA every third Thursday from about 7:30 till about 9 PM. We can be found at the rear of the restaurant at a long

table or on the deck. We welcome anyone who would like to come so-

cialize and meet some of the local members.

Survery Question: RWTW is scheduled to be April 24 - 26, 2009.

With the National being less than 2 months away, would you prefer: (choose one)

A. To move it earlier in the month? B. To move it to the last of March?

C. To not have it for 2009, skip a year. Please e-mail your response to John Carver at [email protected] .

Thank you for your response.

A big Thank You to Jerry Holland for stepping up to rallymeister

next fall’s ‘Winding Rivers and Roads’ Rally. Details forthcoming.

Special Note from the Editor: I’ve switched to Microsoft Publisher

for this newsletter in order to put active links into the content since

90+% of SECOGers receive the E-version. This saves you from

having to cut and paste URLs. Big thank you to Paulie Heydemann,

Mijami, for asking me to do this. Let me know how it works, or IF it works. Also, SEND STUFF for the newsletter. Thanks. Calvin.
