Background
The fresh and brackish water fish fauna of Africa is highly diversified and comprises over 3000 species belonging to about 90 families. These fishes inhabit a wide variety of habitats ranging from small temporary streams to large and permanently flowing rivers, from shallow marshlands to large deep lakes, in dry and wet climatic zones.
In many African countries, fishes are a major source of protein and income generation. While in many regions capture fisheries are fully exploited, the development of aquaculture in Africa continues to lag behind its predicted potential. Despite its economic and social importance, the African fish fauna is exposed to many threats, most of which are of anthropogenic origin. The major causes of the loss of fish diversity are the fragmentation or destruction of habitats resulting from stream regulation, the introduction of alien species, the overexploitation of fish resources, and pollution.
Much research has been, or is being, conducted on the fish and fisheries of the African continent. In order to access and share this growing body of scientific knowledge it was recognized that an international gathering bringing together scientists from all over the world was required. The first of such meetings took place in 1993 in Dakar, Senegal; the second in Grahamstown, South Africa in 1998; the third in Cotonou, Benin in 2003, the fourth in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in 2008. The fifth is due to take place on 16-20 September 2013 in Bujumbura, Burundi.
This meeting will provide an opportunity for scientists from throughout Africa and around the world to come together, to get to know one another, exchange information and ideas, and to initiate collaborative studies. Several renowned scientists, young researchers and other stakeholders are expected to attend this important meeting.
Representatives of the International Organizing Committee (see members above) met on 4-5 June 2012 in Bujumbura and set up the themes and the necessary dates and requirements for the organization of the meeting.
The International Organizing Committee now seeks contributions to the Conference. Please enclose the title of your paper/poster and suggestions for workshop with your registration form. Abstracts should be sent before 30 April 2013. All abstracts will be refereed before final acceptance. The abstracts need to be in line with the following main themes of the conference.

Format: Font size of 12 points for the title; font size of 11 points for authors name and address (es); font size of 10 for abstract text; the style should be “Times New Roman”. All text must be single spaced, with 2.5 cm left and right margins. Abstract must not exceed 300 words.

Time of presentation: Plenary lectures will take 30 minutes (20 minutes presentation and 10 minutes discussion) and other presentations are limited to 15 minutes (10 minutes presentation and 5 minutes discussion).
Posters:Poster boards will be available at the conference hall. Authors need to install their posters on Sunday 15 September in the afternoon. Posters will remain on display until the end of the conference (Friday afternoon). The maximum dimensions for posters should be 1.20 m (height) x 0.9 m (width).
Technical and scientific workshops:The International and local organizing committees will organize some scientific and technical workshops. Individuals or institutions that have subjects related to the themes and/or sub themes of the conference are requested to contact the committee. Full details of the workshop will be provided in the third announcement.

Contexte
La faune ichtyologique continentale africaine est très diversifiée et comprend plus de 3000 espèces appartenant à près de 90 familles. Les poissons sont présents dans une grande variété d’habitats, depuis les grands fleuves permanents jusqu’aux petites rivières temporaires. Ils peuplent les lacs profonds aussi bien que les zones marécageuses peu profondes et fréquentent les zones climatiques arides et humides.
Le poisson est une source primordiale de protéines dans de nombreux pays africains. La pêche est généralement bien développée alors que l’aquaculture n’a pas donné jusqu’ici tous les résultats escomptés. Malgré son importance économique et sociale, la faune ichtyologique africaine est soumise à divers menaces, principalement d’origine anthropique. Les causes principales de l’érosion de la diversité ichtyologique sont la fragmentation et la destruction des habitats en raison de l’aménagement des bassins versants, l’introduction d’espèces exotiques, la surexploitation des stocks et la pollution.
Plusieurs travaux de recherche ont été réalisés, ou sont en cours, sur la pêche et les poissons en Afrique. Afin de valoriser et de partager cette importante connaissance scientifique, il s’est avéré nécessaire d’organiser une conférence internationale pérenne, associant des chercheurs du monde entier, sensibilisés à l’ichtyologie africaine. La première conférence s’est tenue en 1993 au Sénégal ; la seconde à Grahamstown (Afrique du Sud) en 1998; la troisième à Cotonou (Bénin) en 2003; la quatrième à Addis Abeba (Éthiopie) en 2008. Il est prévu que la cinquième se tienne du 18 au 22 septembre 2013 à Bujumbura (Burundi).
Cette conférence doit permettre aux scientifiques africains ou de différentes régions du monde de se connaître et d’échanger des informations et des connaissances, ainsi que de mettre en place des collaborations. Plusieurs scientifiques confirmés, jeunes chercheurs ou autres intervenants participeront à cette importante réunion.
Des représentants du Comité International d’Organisation (voir la liste ci-dessous) se sont réunis à Bujumbura les 4 et 5 juin 2012. Ils ont établi la liste des thèmes et l’agenda pour l’organisation de la prochaine conférence.
Le Comité d’organisation international attend maintenant les contributions des participants. Vous êtes invités à transmettre le titre de votre présentation orale ou de votre poster, ainsi que les suggestions concernant les groupes de travail avec votre bulletin d’enregistrement. Les résumés doivent être envoyés avant le 30 avril 2013. Tous les résumés seront soumis à arbitrage avant d’être définitivement acceptés.

Durée de présentation: Les lectures plénières dureront 30 minutes (20 minutes de présentation et 10 minutes de discussion). Les autres présentations sont limitées à 15 minutes (10 minutes de présentation et 5 minutes de discussion).
Posters:Des tableaux d’affichage seront disponibles dans le hall de la conférence. Les auteurs installeront leurs posters le dimanche 15 septembre (après-midi). Les affiches seront exposées jusqu’à la clôture de la Conférence (vendredi après-midi). Les dimensions maximum d’une affiche sont : 1,20m de hauteur et 0,9m de largeur.
Ateliers techniques / ScientifiquesLe Comité d’Organisation local et le Comité Scientifique International vont organiser des ateliers techniques et scientifiques. Les personnes ou institutions disposant des sujets relatifs aux thèmes et/ou sous-thèmes de

la conférence sont priées de prendre contact avec le comité. Les informations concernant les ateliers seront fournies dans la troisième annonce.

Excursion de mi-conférence (compris dans les frais d’inscription):
Une excursion à mi-conférence sera organisée le mercredi 18 septembre 2013 le long de la très diversifiée côte du lac Tanganyika, le plus vieux, le plus long et le plus profond des grands lacs africains; sa faune diversifié de poissons est pour un grande partie endémique. Certaines de ces espèces seront disponibles au déjeuner.

Des excursions post-conférences peuvent être organisées en contactant soit le Comité d’organisation local, soit des agences de voyage locales.
