Second Grade January 2020 Readers Workshop In this unit, “Studying Characters and Their Stories”, second grade students will study characters in books they read. They will learn about characters by paying close attention to the character’s motivation, problems, and how characters change and grow. Students will learn strategies for figuring out unknown vocabulary words and phrases. Students will learn to make inferences and understand the bigger meaning of stories they read. The priority standards that will be addressed during this unit are: Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text. Recount stories, including fables and folktales from diverse cultures, and determine their central message, lesson, or moral. Describe how characters in a story respond to major events and challenges. Use information gained from the illustrations and words in a print or digital text to demonstrate understanding of its characters, setting, or plot. Writers Workshop In this unit, “Writing Gripping Fictional Stories” second graders will write fictional stories that have detail and suspense. Students will learn to write these stories by making a movie in their mind and by envisioning what will happen in each scene. Students will create tension in their stories by creating problems in which characters must overcome. Students will revise their story by developing characters, adding details, and adding dialogue to highlight important character traits. Students will study mentor authors in order to make their stories better. The priority standards that will be addressed during this unit are: Write narratives in which they recount a well-elaborated event or short sequence of events, include details to describe actions, thoughts, and feelings, use temporal words to signal event order, and provide a sense of closure. With guidance and support from adults and peers, focus on a topic and strengthen writing as needed by revising and editing. In the Envision math program, second grade students will be learning how to fluently add and subtract within 100. In this unit, students will learn strategies to add and subtract within 100. They will learn how to break apart numbers and regroup numbers in order to subtract. They will solve these problems using math manipulatives such as base-10 blocks, pictures, and number sentences. The priority standards that will be addressed during this unit are: Represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction. Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one - and two - step word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting

Readers Workshop

In this unit, “Studying Characters and Their Stories”, second grade students will study characters in books they read. They will learn about characters by paying close attention to the character’s motivation, problems, and how characters change and grow. Students will learn strategies for figuring out unknown vocabulary words and phrases. Students will learn to make inferences and understand the bigger meaning of stories they read. The priority standards that will be addressed during this unit are:

• Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text.

• Recount stories, including fables and folktales from diverse cultures, and determine their central message, lesson, or moral.

• Describe how characters in a story respond to major events and challenges.

• Use information gained from the illustrations and words in a print or digital text to demonstrate understanding of its characters, setting, or plot.

The priority standards that will be addressed during this unit are:

• Write narratives in which they recount a well-elaborated event or short sequence of events, include details to describe actions, thoughts, and feelings, use temporal words to signal event order, and provide a sense of closure.

• With guidance and support from adults and peers, focus on a topic and strengthen writing as needed by revising and editing.

The priority standards that will be addressed during this unit are:

• Represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction. Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one - and two - step word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting

together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.

• Use place value understanding and properties of operations to add and subtract. Fluently add and subtract within 100 using strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction.

In the unit: “Properties of Materials”, students will answer the question: Can heating an ingredient help to make better glue? Students will be observing a glue ingredient before and after heating and make predictions about what will happen. Students will continue to conduct sticky tests. Students will apply the concept of cause and effect by explaining the effects they are observing.

In this unit titled: “New York City Over Time”, students will evaluate how New York City has changed over time. They will learn about change, by exploring categories such as population, changing communities, homes and buildings, transportation, jobs and industry, technology, and communication throughout the 1600s, 1700s, 1800s, and 1900s.
