• reprinted by perrnission of the author from: Ohio Bicycle Communicator, published by Ohio Bicycle Federation, Cleveland, Ohio)
Most people find it hard to argue with the environmentalist case for biking to work, and harder still to fit commuting into their daily routine. From what I have seen, biking to work is rare, even among people who consider themselves ardent cyclists-they enjoy bicycling recreationally, but they are weekend warriors.
I have bicycled to work for 14 years, riding to work because I was too poor to afford a car, and I got hooked. I have commuted in Boston; Ithaca, New York; and Cleveland, over (round trip) distances of 4 to 22 miles. I am committed to bicycle commuting as I am committed to ice cream-I do it because I want to, not because I should.
I feel I am privy to a great secret that has been concealed from the general public: bicycle commuting is economical, time-effective, manageable, safe, enjoyable, and healthy. I have compared notes enough with other bicycle commuters to know that my experience is typical. By seeing how it works for me, you may be convinced to give it a serious try.
My current commute is 11 miles (22 round trip) from Lakewood to (Clevelands)
Case Western Reserve University.
Economical: The cost of running an automobile averages $.30 a mile. Think about it: that would be $6.60 a day, just to drive to work! Parking would cost an additional $2.00 a day At those rates, I could buy a whole new bicycle every time my old one had a flat tire.
Time-Effective: It takes me 25-45 minutes to drive (depending on traffic and where I find a parking
· space), 40-50 minutes to ride the Rapid (depending on how long I have to wait at the station), and 40-55 minutes to bike (depending on how hard I pedal) to work. I find the physical and psychological benefits of cycling worth the extra 20-30 minutes a day.
Manageable: I work in an academic environment that does not require pressed shirts or three-piece suits. I wear riding clothes on the bike, and then change to street clothes at the office. I bring two changes of clothes to the office per week in the winter, and one extra change of underwear per week in the summer. A touch of deodorant and clean underwear is all I have ever needed to be
sweet-smelling, and perma- I act like the vehicles they nent press outer wear is are used to. presentable enough. The need for a shower after a ride to work is a myth. Even in the middle of summer it is usually cool enough in the early morning in Cleveland that I do not get sweaty enough to need a shower. On really hot days, I ride to work more slowly ..
Safe: In 14 years of biking to work I have never been hit by another vehicle. This aspect of my riding is also apparently typical. Bicycle commuting has the lowest accident rate of any f om1 of cycling (See John F arrester's Effective Cycling for complete data on the incidence of various types of accidents by various types of cyclists.) I attribute my record to a combination of the relative safety of the modern urban traffic system and my own behavior. The urban traffic system was designed for and works well for vehicles traveling at 15-35 mph, be they motorized or humanpowered. I use a highly-def ensive, vehicular riding style. I drive my bike as I would drive a car, only more slowly and defensively. I obey the rules of the road. Other drivers are much safer, more courteous, and more predictable if
Enjoyable: The enjoyment of bicycle commuting is different from the enjoyment of recreational cycling; it requires a completely cliff erent mind set. In urban traffic, I can never let down my guard. At all times, I must know the location and relative speeds of all vehicles around me, I must be thinking of what I will encounter a half-block ahead, and I must be alert for unexpected changes in the traffic situation. I can never spin meditatively or admire the scenery as I . could on a lonely rural road. Bicycle commuting is more like criterium racing than rural touring. The enjoyment lies in doing a complex task well, in being so on top of a situation you seem to flow with it.
Healthy: I hate exercise. I like couches and ice cream. Health spas are fine for people with character, but I do not have the requisite discipli!)-e to stick to any regimen requiring physical effort and/or pain. Nonetheless, the enjoyment of bike commuting has proven so compelling that I am, in fact, in very good physical condition. I guess it is also a health benefit to have one less car polluting our air ..
