After one month of summer here at Second Church I am pleased to report some exciting happenings in, around, and through our church.

1. We have completed another wonderful Vacation Bible School under the leadership of our Director of Children’s Ministry Missy Wallace. Eighty (80) elementary age children attended VBS and 55 adults and youth volunteered to create a four-day experience of faith formation for our children. 2. Nineteen (19) high school youth and 5 adult advisors traveled to Clinton, TN to help repair the homes of low income elderly people through the REACH youth work camp ministry. Our Associate Pastor for Youth and Mission Barrett Milner said that it was another terrific faith-and-service experience for our youth. The youth will report on their mission trip in worship on July 8. 3. We held our first annual Families Picnic sponsored by the Families adult Sunday school class with leadership from elder Eddie Mesta and our Associate Pastor for Adult Ministry and Fellowship Karen Hartsfield. Susan and Lee Abner hosted the picnic at which 40 were in attendance for good food and fellowship. 4. On a personal note, on the last weekend in May, my daughter was married here at Second Church. Our family and friends enjoyed the beautiful sanctuary while Beth and I appreciated the assistance of organist Martha Anderson and wedding coordinator Shawn Ray. I had the unique opportunity to walk my daughter down the aisle and then perform the wedding ceremony. Blessings, Dan

SECOND SHARING . . . 2012 VBS PAGE 3 We had a fabulous time at our “Sky” VBS this month. Together with pilot Flash Skyrunner, we soared into an adventure where we learned that no matter what to trust God. Approximately 80 children enjoyed a week filled with bible memory buddies, cool science experiments, out of this world snacks and games. For our mission project during the week, the children brought in over $100 in change to purchase mosquito nets for children in Mali, Africa. The Children’s Ministry Council would like to say a special thank you to our 58 volunteers who made Vacation Bible school an outstanding experience for our children. VBS continued to make an impact after the week was over. After learning about the malaria epidemic in Africa, two of our children went home and held a lemonade stand and raised $28 to contribute to our mission project.

Hello, friends! In May, we met to have lunch together and hear a program by Pastor Dan on Abraham Lincoln’s faith. Wonderful food and fascinating presentation. Then, in June, the congregation celebrated our veterans who attended a luncheon in their honor. The next luncheon specifically for Second Seniors will be October 9 at 12:00 noon with a program to be determined. In addition, Hendy Seelbach has the yearly October trip organized and ready for you to sign up and head to Virginia. . .please do! Occasionally, people query in regard to fun ideas for local Senior trips. Anyone submitting ideas, please follow up: 1) plan which day/time you intend to go, 2) inform Karen Hartsfield of the details regarding where, and whether or not you will need the church bus, far enough in advance for her to find a driver, coordinate with other users of the bus, and publicize the event in Second Sharing (which is published monthly). The bus holds 14 persons. More than five participants are advisable for using the bus. One participant (not the bus driver) needs to be willing to stay with any participant who becomes ill. 3) plan to contribute to gas, and to pay for food and entrance fees. Fees for anyone wishing to go, yet unable to pay, may be covered by participants, in the event any are willing to donate. Personal vehicles will need to be used for trips to gambling or alcohol-related venues. In addition, four or five individuals are needed who will serve as Activities Task Force for our 400-plus Second Seniors. Please submit your names to Karen Hartsfield (254-7768) by June 30. (No names submitted? Translation: no one is interested in fun!)

CARRY ME BACK TO OLD VIRGINNY All adult members and guests are invited to join us October 25-28, 2012 on this wonderful adventure. We are on our way to Central Virginia and the Shenandoah Valley to explore this very historic area. Day One will find us in Beckley, WV where we will visit Tamarack for lunch and

then onto the Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine at the New River Park area. Day Two we will explore Lexington, Virginia touring Stonewall Jackson’s home, Lee Chapel and Museum and the Marshall Museum. This day will end with a Cadet Parade at VMI. Day Three, we will travel to Natural Bridge and then onto Appomattox Court House National Park. Day Four, we will worship at Old Stone Presbyterian Church in Lewisburg, WV. This unique church was erected in 1796 and is the oldest active Presbyterian Church west of the Allegany’s.

Registration forms are available in the church office. Please complete and send to Second Church with your non-refundable deposit of $75 to reserve your place. Deadline on reservations is September 10 with final payment due on September 30. If you have any questions, please call Hendy Seelbach (859-276-3358 or 859-351-5133)

FINANCE UPDATE

Please remember to support the church through the summer months, as we continue to maintain our ongoing service to our community and each other. Mid-year contribution statement will be mailed in mid July. Contact Mollie Sawyer, Director of Finance and Operations (254-7768 or [email protected]) if you have questions. As of the end of May, our total pledges received to the church was 39% of our yearly goal and we should be at 42%.

End of May (year to date) 2012 Receipts: $542,363 2012 Expenses: $462,409

Surplus $ 61,954 Note: Mission giving is sent out at the end of each quarter; $51,000 will be disbursed at the end of June.

If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me , as the Scripture

has said, streams of living water will flow from within him. John 7:37

It's time to rethink your drink. Many sweetened drinks are high in calories and are associated with the current national epidemic of obesity. In 2010 38 states had obesity rates over 25%. The obesity problem is closely associated with diabetes and heart disease. Since the 1960's there has been a considerable increase in

carbohydrates, sugar, and high fructose corn syrup consumption. Both sucrose and high fructose corn syrup are in processed foods, especially soft drinks and fruit drinks. We have increased our intake of regular sodas fourfold since 1957. They have gone from being a treat to a regular part of every day. For example, a 20 ounce can of soda contains 240 calories, a 16 ounce Hawaiian Punch has 240, and a 16 ounce sport drink has 140 calories. Read the labels and beware of ingredients named corn syrup, dextrose, fructose, syrup, or high fructose corn syrup. Even though fruit juice has nutritional value, they are also high in calories. Coffee drinks have become so popular, but can cause weight gain if you buy ones with flavored syrups, whipped cream, or half and half. Consider the mocha with whole milk and whipped cream at 400 calories! To decrease your total caloric intake eliminate regular sodas and fruit drinks. If you stop for coffee, order the smallest size or just drink regular. Skip the whipped cream and flavorings. Choose drinks with 5 calories or fewer, like sparkling water with natural flavors or just plain water! It's what your body needs in these hot days.

There’s still time to join us on July 8-13 , led by M i s s i o n C o m m i t t e e chairperson, Ray Davis, as we embark upon our first-annua l m iss ion t r ip excursion to the Buckhorn

Children’s Center in Buckhorn, KY. Founded in 1902 with support of numerous Presbyterian congregations, Buckhorn Children’s Center currently provides residential treatment and special education programs for 28 youth from 12-17 years of age. As many of you are aware, Second church has been a long-time mission partner and financial supporter of the Buckhorn Children’s Center ministry, and in our continued efforts to engage in the “hands-on” work of the Church’s call for service and mission. This year’s Buckhorn Mission Trip experience will be open to any and all who wis h to serve. Work projects will be varied and will require the gifts and skills of all ability levels. Should you be interested in learning more about this exciting and life-changing opportunity, please contact Ray Davis (272-1389 or [email protected]) or Barrett Milner (254-7768 or [email protected]) for more details and registration information.

Answer: Any woman who attends or is a member of a Presbyterian Church! So that includes ALL women! ! Here is an example of what one group of Presbyterian Women is doing at Second Presbyterian Church.

At each monthly gathering, the Monday Beth Wachs Circle studied The Beatitudes– and learned they are a “call to action” for us to honor, stand with and care for the poor, the meek, the hungry, and others. Next year we will use the PW study of the Books of 1, 2 Peter, 1, 2, 3 John, and Jude in “Dispatches to God’s Household.” Our mission giving this year has totaled over $1500 (!), including a $300 gift to Camp Burnamwood; $200 each to the work and mission of PW at the Presbytery, Synod and Churchwide levels; $238 to the special PW offerings (Thank and Birthday) to improve the health and economic situations of women and children – and men – around the world; $384 to shop for Christmas gifts for a Westminster Village family; and $22.67 to the Fellowship of the Least Coin (a worldwide ecumenical offering to assist women and children). Whew! That is a good chunk of mission! Being connected with PW’s everywhere can get a lot of good work done in the name of Jesus Christ. A small stained glass window in memory of Beth Wachs is being planned for the Forum Room using the contributions made to the church in her memory. We will keep the congregation informed as plans move along, especially the time of the dedication. We’ll begin our “next” year on Monday, September 10 at 1:00 p.m. in the Forum Room. We’ll have a light snack, do a little business and then get into the Bible study. There is wonderful fellowship, new friends to make, challenging Bible study, opportunities for mission work, and the chance to join the thousands and thousands of women across the world who “are” Presbyterian Women. Come be part of this dynamic endeavor!! For more info contact Karen May (223-5434).

The next All-Church Blood Drive will be held on Sunday, July 15 in the room next to the Gathering Place (9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.). Look for the sign up sheet on the “sign post” across from the church office.
