We are generally positive thinking folks, and we tend to feel good about ourselves. Yet this journey that we take toward the cross of Good Friday is proclaimed in the face of death. But all too frequently, few people attend Ash Wednesday services. We don’t like to be reminded of our sin, our finiteness, dust and ashes. However, if you do miss the Ash Wednesday service, there are six opportunities during this season to face head on our sinfulness and finiteness. Each week during Lent we are given the opportunity to ask God to forgive us and we are pardoned of that sin. We are assured each and every week that, “In Jesus Christ we are forgiven.” While the season of Lent does not come naturally to us, as we journey closer to the Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, it is that joy that we celebrate on Easter Sunday. The hope and joy of that day does come naturally to us. But before we can celebrate the Resurrection, we must journey through the season of Lent. See you in church and bring a friend, Tom

On February 14 we begin the Lenten journey with the imposition of ashes known as Ash Wednesday. Will Willimon writes, “Lent tells the church that any journey toward life, toward rebirth, toward God makes its way through forlorn regions of darkness, honesty and hopelessness.” Lent is a journey that doesn’t come naturally for many of us. We are generally positive thinking folks, and we tend to feel good about ourselves. Yet this journey that we take toward the cross of Good Friday is proclaimed in the face of death. The ashes we receive on our foreheads on Ash Wednesday remind us that we are finite creatures. We all have a beginning and an end. “From dust you were formed and to dust you shall return,” are the words said as the ashes are imposed.

Since colonial times, so-called “mainline Protestants,” including Presbyterians, had a major role in defining how the general public should perceive the Christian faith. That role now belongs to groups of Christians who understand the faith very differently. One result has been that many Americans have grown suspicious of faith itself. Why? The Lenten series will explore questions like this: Is it possible to have faith in God when so many who claim faith do it aggressively, immodestly, and with apparently little respect for those who do not share it? Or should we hand Jesus Christ over to the fundamentalists?

• What is faith anyway? • How does one “get” it? • Does it make any sense, or is it completely irrational?

Rev. Byars looks forward to seeing folks he knows, and folks he doesn’t know yet!

The McGaha Lectures honor the legacy of Chuck McGaha of Second Presbyterian Church who was an avid participant in the congregation’s Adult Educational program.

BLANKETS OF HOPE

To do what is right and just is more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice. Proverbs 21:3

Ninety-eight (13 from Second Church) attended BUILD's Research to Action Kickoff held at Second on December 11th. Rev. Tom welcomed all and opened with prayer. Rev. David gave BUILD's vision statement. To date, and many more planned over the next several weeks, six 'Drug' research meetings have been held with directors, researchers, counselors and supervisors from Chrysalis House, SAVI (Substance Abuse and Violence Intervention), Drug Court, Probation and Parole, UK Behavioral Health and Fay. Co. Public Health. The information we've heard about the worsening opioid/heroin crisis throughout our city is overwhelming and distressing. The experts shared many barriers they face in 'trying to get a hold on this problem'. Thanks to Rev. David for serving on the Drug Steering Committee. Any Justice Ministry Network Member interested in participating in any upcoming DRUG and/or GUN/VIOLENCE research meeting is invited to join are welcome to call the BUILD's office (859-367-0152 or email [email protected]). You can choose which specific day(s) and time(s) that work for you to serve. Second’s Justice Ministry Team and Rev. David are planning an all church event, Community Justice Conversations, to be held mid-February. Our current focus is: what does the PCUSA 'say' about doing justice and advocacy work? We will announce date and time next week. All Justice Ministry Network Members please note—our annual congregational meeting has been rescheduled to Sunday, March 11th from 12:00 noon-1:30 p.m., (box lunch provided). Your Team is working diligently to revise and revitalize the agenda for this meeting. Your presence and participation are essential to plan for the Rally, April 16th and Nehemiah Action, May 8th. Thank You! Fredda, Bill, Teresa, Jim and Judy

FOR THE HEALTH OF IT

• Children’s Choir Director - Jessica Bailey I am currently in my junior year at the University of Kentucky, majoring in Vocal Performance and Choral Music Education with a minor in Theatre. I have a breadth of Choral and Music Education experience, starting a

children's choir at my home parish in Madison, Georgia and directing a number of Musical Theatre summer programs. I am thrilled to begin my journey as your new Children's Choir Director. I hope to provide a fun and safe environment for the kids to explore their spirituality through music, singing your favorite children's Christian songs and introducing the musical components of the service. I look forward to meeting everyone and getting involved in this wonderful church family, and I hope to see many new faces in our children's choir in the upcoming weeks! Welcome, Jessica!

• Communication Coordinator - Chloe Specht Chloe grew up in the foothills of western North Carolina and attended college at Mid-America Christian University where she studied Christian Ministries and English. She is now a student at Asbury Theological Seminary working towards a Master of Divinity. In her spare time, she likes to crochet, watch documentaries, and travel to National Parks. Welcome, Chloe!

• Part-Time Security/Set Up - W.C. Corbin W.C. is a life-long resident of Fayette County. He attended UK with a degree in Business Administration and has wife, Chris, and two daughters, Leah (Andrew) and Carlisle (Brent), and two sons, Lane and Bo. Both of his daughters are expecting his first grandkids this summer. He enjoys providing help to seniors, and providing transportation for those that are not able to drive themselves. He loves dogs and has a French Bulldog (Roosevelt) and an Australian Shepherd (Lola), along with a grand-dog (Olive). He truly enjoys meeting all the people of the congregation. But he always gets asked the same question - What does W.C. stand for? And the answer is William Carlisle.

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28

Healthy sleep habits determine how our days play out, and affect many areas of our health. Scientists who study sleep offer suggestions for how well and when we sleep--called sleep hygiene:

⇒ avoid caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol--all stimulants

⇒ set the mood--quiet, dark , cool

⇒ set a pre-sleep routine to trigger your brain that it is time to rest

⇒ sleep when you are tired. If not asleep after 20 minutes, get up and do something relaxing

⇒ keep a consistent schedule. You can't bank sleep!

⇒ don't eat right before bed. Your body will be busy digesting, not resting

⇒ exercise early rather than before sleep so you are ready to relax.

If not sleeping is a chronic issue, consult with your health care provider.
