Reflections that I Shared at the Memorial for Bob Destefano on July 2, 2011 I once heard someone say: Life is good but living is hard. From conversations with Bob and from my knowledge of him, I would say that saying was true for him. For Bob, life was good but living was hard. Like all of us, Bob’s life had its highs and lows. Maybe his ups and downs exceeded our own a bit. Those of us who worked with him were glad that recently his life was rising out of a deep valley. Although he died suddenly and tragically, he seemed to be as happy and peaceful as we have seen him in a long time. I suspect that as he crested that hill out on Winchester Road one week ago last evening, possibly feeding his motorcycle with a little extra gas, he had a big smile on his face, thinking about how good life can be, just before colliding with how hard and unpredictable living can be. Even though Bob is no longer with us in this life, we can continue to experience for ourselves that life is good and living is hard and hope is eternal as is the God from whom life comes and to whom life ultimately returns. The Honduras Medical and Dental Mission Trip took place June 20-25 in San Luis de Santa Barbara in the mountains of north central Honduras. Almost 3000 medical and dental patients were treated and almost 800 school children were given fluoride treatments and dental education. Those from Second Church participating in the trip were Jim and Becky Drahovzal, Bill Maloney, Jeanie Price-Kagan and Dan Hans (Mission Co-Director who made his 14th trip to Honduras.) HONDURAS MEDICAL/DENTAL MISSION TRIP

MISSION AND ADVOCACY WORK CAMP This was the seventh year that Second Church has sent a team to West Virginia to work with MAW (Mission and Advocacy Work Camps). A Christian Ministry supported by the Presbyterian Church (USA). Those attending this year were Shirley Caldwell, Anne Atcher, Bruce Wilson, Tambu Chirwa, Larry Jackson and Ray Davis . The residents were a father and two children. We worked on a bathroom and insulated and dry walled their living room. The roof had been repaired the week before by another volunteer group. We left knowing that the House would be warmer, dry when it rained and the family would have the proper bath facilities. If interested in joining us next year, contact Ray Davis (272-1389 or [email protected]).

SECOND BOOK CORNER is a new addition to Second Sharing focusing on our church l ibrary, new acquisitions, book reviews, favorite reading lists of church staff and members, and other new ideas for our church library. Reading has

never been more popular because of Kindles, Nooks, IPads, Oprah Book Club Selections, beach books, or school reading requirements! While I like eBooks, I still love to hold and read a “real book”. Three of our newest church library books are The Omnivore’s Dilemma by Michael Pollan (2006), The Lacuna by Kentucky author Barbara Kingsolver (2009), and In A Time of War: the Proud and Perilous Journey of West Point’s Class of 2002 by Bill Murphy Jr. (2008). Karen Hartsfield, our Associate Pastor of Adult Ministry and Fellowship, recently shared with me a list of many Christian education resources. We are hopeful to acquire new Christian library materials in areas such as being a disciple, raising children, and learning about Spirit and prayer. Keep a lookout for new items in Christian education! I hope to feature each month a “2011 Best Sellers List” by a different Christian publisher. Here is the list of Best Sellers (2011) by InterVarsity Press: (1) The Good and Beautiful Community: Following the Spirit, Extending Grace, Demonstrating Love by James Bryan Smith; (2) The Language of Science and Faith: Straight Answers to Genuine Questions by Karl Giberson and Francis S. Collins; (3) A Place for Truth: Leading Thinkers Explore Life’s Hardest Questions , ed. Dallas Willard; (4) Small Faith – Great God: Biblical Faith for Today’s Christians by NT Wright; and (5) After Shock: Searching for Honest Faith When Your World is Shaken by Kent Annan. Check out the new SECOND BOOK CORNER bulletin boards in the Gathering Place! One board will have a sheet for you to let us know your favorite books for acquisition by our library. I hope you will enjoy this monthly addition and let me know any ideas you have for improving our church library. Please remember we have a two week check out policy. If you have any books overdue, please kindly return them for use by other members. Have a great August reading your favorite book or eBook! By Sarah Orrahood Hall

SECOND CHURCH MISSION SUPPORT TO BELLEWOOD HOME FOR CHILDREN IN LOUISVILLE

Bellewood Presbyterian Home for Children is a nonprofit ministry serving abused, neglected and homeless youth

throughout Kentucky since 1849. We reclaim, educate and empower struggling children and families so they may lead

healthy, independent lives.

‘Grow to Go’ Garden‘Grow to Go’ Garden‘Grow to Go’ Garden‘Grow to Go’ Garden

What makes Bellewood unique from other child and family services is our dedication to connecting youth with supportive adults who can offer friendship, guidance and inspiration. Through the help of devoted, enthusiastic volunteers, a transformation is taking place at Bellewood with youth learning the value behind wholesome food and hard work as they develop vegetable gardens across the campus. We’re calling it the ’Grow to Go’ Garden - with every seed our youth sow, they learn a little more about the earth, about healthy choices and about themselves as they grow to go into the community as educated, well-rooted adults. This summer Bellewood youth will take their project one step further as they go out into the community and sell the first fruits of their labor. From tilling to harvest, Bellewood’s young people are gaining the self-confidence, through this therapeutic outlet, they need in order to grow into independent adults. The experiences our youth get in this garden are immeasurably impactful, and we hope our garden story can inspire you to share your life with us too.

THANKS TO VBS VOLUNTEERS! PARENT’S MORNING OUT NOW HIRING!

While the summer months may be spent outside of school, it remains a very busy time for children. From family vacations to sports activities, children stay on the go, often as much as they are during the school year. Here at Second, we look forward to our Vacation Bible School each year Not only does VBS serve as an outreach event, it connects members of our church family together who would otherwise not be involved in children’s ministry.

This year 62 children passed through the doors at Second to attend our “Shake It Up” café. Together, we learned how to be ready for God, celebrate God, and remember what Jesus did forever. The children played games, prepared meals and learned the value of sharing. In just three days our children collected 422 lbs. of food for God’s pantry ! Volunteers took off time from work to share their talents and give of their time. We would like to say a BIG children’s ministry thank you to the fabulous volunteer staff we had running VBS this year:

HOW HAS SECOND PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH MADE A DIFFERENCE IN YOUR LIFE?

(A cross section of our members has been asked to reply to this question. Throughout the summer and fall, culminating with our late fall stewardship campaign, personal responses to this question will appear in Second Sharing.)

We waited until Second Church chose a pastor to join the church in 2008. It was not because of the pastor’s charisma, but the environment that he would bring to the church’s direction and vision. The environment of Second Presbyterian is the biggest impact the church has made in my life. The environment of Second Church has enabled my faith to evolve and allowed it to unfold in my life. The reason environment is important is that it makes room for searching and reflecting on my vision of God which stimulates growth in service, worship, and fellowship which keeps my faith relevant to the world in which I live. Glenn Raile y (Note : Glenn has been a key player in coordinating our current Habitat for Humanity build project.)

SECOND SENIORS TRIP 2011

Discretion will protect you, and understanding will guard you. Proverbs 1:11

It's hard to believe, but we are looking at the start of another school year just around the corner! For many children that means back into sports and sports practices. While the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that every child participate in sports or

recreational activities, precautions need to be taken to prevent sports injuries. Brain injury is of utmost concern, with the most common injury being sprains, muscle strains, bone or growth plate injuries, repetitive motion injuries, and heat-related illness. Each year, more than 3.5 million children ages 14 and under receive medical treatment for sports injury. Most organized sports issues arise during practice rather than during games, and a national survey shows that 33% of parents don't take the same precautions during practice as they would for a game. What can be done? Recommendations include :

►Always insist that children have access to and CONSISTENTLY use appropriate gear and protection equipment. ►Organized sports through schools, clubs, and recreation areas should monitor and instruct on injury prevention. ►Be sure coaches are First Aid and CPR trained, and that there is a plan for responding to emergencies. Coaches should know the proper use of equipment and enforce rules on equipment use. ►Sports programs that are staffed with Certified Athletic Trainers are ideal because they are trained to prevent or provide immediate care for athletic injuries. ►Be a strong respecter of the heat! Heat advisories are serious business and a child can become seriously dehydrated very quickly. Water before, during, and after an activity is vital.

Participating in regular physical activity is wonderful for our health, and making it safe keeps it fun. For more information go to ukhealthcare.uky.edu/safekids. Jackie Graves, Parish Nurse

Backpack Buddies

Second is once again partnering with God's Pantry to be Backpack Buddies and this year we have been assigned to Cardinal Valley Elementary School. The school is located at 218 Mandalay Road,

off Versailles Road. We will be working with the Family Resource Center's director, Carmen Cotto. Volunteers are needed to pick up the nonperishable food items at God's Pantry, separate and pack the food items into 50 Kroger plastic bags and deliver the bags on Thursday to Ms. Cotto between the hours of 9:00 am to 3:00 p.m. Items may be picked up at God's Pantry Monday through Friday, packed at your convenience but must be delivered to the school on Thursday; Ms. Cotto operates her office out of a temporary trailer so she does not have much storage area for the bags to be dropped off earlier in the week. Deliveries to the school will begin on September 2. You may pack as a family, with a friend, by yourself or with a group that you are a member of! If you are interested in signing up to pack for this program, please contact Evelyn Kramer (873-4700 or [email protected]).

HOPE CENTER In addition to the many programs that are offered at the Men's Hope Center, another way that the center helps to rebuild lives of those who are homeless is by providing free clothing. The center is in dire need of men's new white socks and underwear and shower flip flops; shirts, slacks, shorts and tee-shirts a re also needed. Please place any donations in the blue bin marked HOPE CENTER found in the closet of the Gathering Place. Note: Please do not give money on Sunday to anyone who comes in the sanctuary off the street. Direct them to one of the following pastors, Dan Hans, Karen Hartsfield or Barrett Milner. Thank you!

HELP FOR A RECENT ARRIVAL FROM BOSNIA The 32-year-old godson of Second Presbyterian Church member Stojanka Simic has just come to Lexington to live. He is staying with Stojanka who, along with her family, was resettled in Lexington by Second Church during the Bosnian War in the early 1990s. Her godson has a Bachelors degree in music and teaches piano and is available for piano lessons. He is in need of an old yet useable car. If you have a car you would consider giving to this young man so that he can get around to provide piano lessons, please call the church office (254-7768). (Since the car will be given to an individual, the donation would not qualify as an IRS tax deduction but it might count for “brownie points” in heaven.)

Dave and Polly Johnson are friends of Second Church members Jim and Becky Drahovzal and very experienced travelers with the Israel/Palestine Mission Network for PCUSA. They are leading a trip to Israel/Palestine to experience the Orthodox Church celebration of Christmas, visit with Israeli and Palestinian peace groups

and spend time in Nazareth, Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Hebron and on the Mediterranean, January 2-10, 2012. The cost of the trip from Louisville, KY will be approximately $2500, which includes lodging, 2 meals a day, entrance fees and gratuities, flying from Newark to Tel Aviv. If you would like more information about the trip, please contact them below: Dave and Polly Johnson 3111 Hendon Rd. Louisville, KY 40220 502-473-8435 [email protected]

Studying the Whole Bible for the First Time (or Maybe the Second Time)

Starting August 28 on Sunday mornings from 9:45–10:45 a.m., in the Best Friends room (next to the Gathering Place). Dan Hans will teach a class called Studying the Whole Bible for the First Time (or Maybe the Second Time). The class is designed to help people who have never studied the Bible to get a sense of what the whole Bible’s story is all about. Also a focus will be placed on how to interpret different parts of the Bible that seem confusing. There will be homework – reading some chapters in the Bible each week. Like so many important things in life, with this class: You will only get out of it what you put into it. That is why there will be a little homework in preparation for each class. Below is the class schedule for the first two months to give an idea of what will be covered in the class.
