    THE GATHERING OF THE PEOPLE

PRELUDE "Ring Out, Wild Bells" Mike Carson

    Jill Z. Truax, organ

BRINGING IN THE LIGHT Rev. Dr. Anna V. Copeland

    COMMUNITY WORDS

    THE CHIMING OF THE HOUR

CALL TO WORSHIP AND OPENING PRAYER

*OPENING HYMN "Arise, Your Light is Come!" FESTAL SONG

    *LITANY Sue Wimpy

One: At the dawn of creation, God said, "Let there be light!" All: And the glory of God shone throughout the universe. One: At Christmas, the Light of the World was born. All: And darkness no longer governed the world. One: At the end of days, when the sun and moon no longer shed their light, All: God's light will still shine brightly. One: Let us pray...

  • *UNISON PRAYER OF CONFESSION Sue Wimpy

Creator God, you have made us to be creatures of light rather than darkness, people of open rather than closed hearts, people of hope rather than despair. We confess that sometimes we choose darkness instead of light. Sometimes we close off our hearts and give in to despair. Forgive us, we pray, and turn us back to your light, that we might be people of joy. Amen

    *WORDS OF ASSURANCE

*CHRISTMAS GLORIA Gloria, in excelsis deo, Gloria, in excelsis deo.

    GLORIA

*PASSING OF THE PEACE Rev. Joshua J. Longbottom

    ATTENDING TO GOD'S WORD

    ANTIPHONAL READING FROM THE PSALTER

    Psalm 30: 4-5, 11-12 JILL Z. TRUAX

    Cantor

Sing praises to the Lord, O you God's faithful ones, And give thanks to God's holy name. For God's anger is but for a moment; God's favor is for a lifetime. Weeping may linger for the night, but joy comes with the morning

    Cantor

You have turned my mourning into dancing; You have taken off my sackcloth and clothed me with joy, So that my soul may praise you and not be silent. O Lord my God, I will give thanks to you forever.

    Cantor

  • READING FROM THE GOSPEL OF JOHN Rev. Dr. Anna V. Copeland

One: The Gospels tell the Good News of God's love for all creation. All: God's love shines into the shadows of our world.

John 1:1-5, 1-14 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. God was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through God, and without God not one thing came into being. What has come into being in God was life, and the life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness and the darkness did not overcome it. God was in the world, and the world came into being through God; yet the world did not know God. God came to what was God's own, and God's own people did not accept God. But to all who received God, who believed in God's name, God gave power to become children of God, who were born, not of blood or of the will of the flesh or of the will of man, but of God. And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen God's glory, the glory as of a father's only son, full of grace and truth.

    RESPONSE

One: In Jesus, we see the glory of God. All: In Jesus, we receive grace, truth, and light.

ANTHEM "Light of a Clear Blue Morning" Dolly Parton

    Rachel E. Carter, soprano

It's been a long dark night, and I've been a-waitin' for the morning. It's been a long hard fight, but I see a brand new day a-dawning.

I've been looking for the sunshine, I ain't seen it in so long. And everything's gonna workout just fine,

and everything's gonna be alright, that's been all wrong.

(Refrain) 'Cause I can see the light of a clear blue morning, I can see the light of a brand new day,

I can see the light of a clear blue morning. Oh, and everything's gonna be alright, it's gonna be okay.

It's been a long, long, time, since I've known the taste of freedom. Those clinging vines, that had me bound, well I don't need them,

Oh I've been like a captured eagle, you know, and eagle's born to fly. Now that I have won my freedom, like an eagle, I'm eager for the sky. (Refrain)

SERMON "A Light Shines in the Darkness" Rev. Joshua J. Longbottom

"Weeping may linger for the night, but joy comes with the morning." Psalm 30: 15b

  • THE GREAT THANKSGIVING

    INVITATION TO OFFERING Sue Wimpy

OFFERTORY "The Lord is My Light" Frances Allitsen

    Rachel E. Carter, soprano

The Lord is my light and my salvation, Whom, then, shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life, of whom then shall I be afraid?

    Though an host of men were laid against me, yet shall not my heart be afraid;

And tho' there rose up war against me, Yet will I put my trust in Him.

For, in the time of trouble, He shall hide me in His tabernacle, Yea, in the secret places of His dwelling shall He hide me, and set me up upon a rock of stone.

The Lord is my light and my salvation, Whom, then, shall I fear?

The Lord is the strength of my life, of whom then shall I be afraid?

    UNISON OFFERTORY PRAYER

We thank you God for filling our world with more than enough for everyone. Through Christmas, you gifted us with Christ who declared all your people worthy of life and love. Guide us in this season of Christmas and Epiphany to shine your light brightly with whatever resources you have entrusted to our care. Amen
