Tomorrow, December 12, is the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe and our parish along with Our Lady of Mercy-Sacred Heart has been preparing in a special way during the past nine days, with the Mañanitas (a good morning song greeting Our Lady for her feast) in each of the Church and our Vigil Procession this evening. We welcome Bishop Hector Guerrero, SDB of Oaxaca who is here to celebrate the feast with us! Sometimes we can think of this day as merely a “Mexican” celebration and miss the significance and importance of it. Saint Pope John Paul II declared Our Lady of Guadalupe as patroness of all of American North America, Central America and South America. Mary appeared to a poor, simple Indian—Juan Diego in 1531—just 39 years after Columbus discovered America! The Church was finding little success in bringing the faith to the native peoples of Mexico because they feared the anger of their violent false “gods”. Our Lady appeared to Juan Diego—leaving her image on his tilma for all to see and all did see it, so that rapidly the whole country of Mexico came to the faith! Indeed, before the secularization of that country, Our Lady of Guadalupe's image was at the center of the flag of Mexico. And, just as rapidly, devotion to our Lady of Guadalupe began to spread throughout all of America. Celebrating the First appearance of Mary in the new world. Today, the Shrine at Guadalupe is the most visited Marian Shrine in the world! Many go to pray and beg Mary’s intercession. Some go just out of curiosity to see the tilma– which scientists tell us should be rotted after so many centuries. Scientist go to study the image which is so beautiful and vibrant in color: no paint used! It is so real that we can see reflected in the eyes of Mary the surprised and awed faces of Bishop Zumarraga, and the others with him when the roses fell from the tilma and they saw the magnificent “self portrait” of Our Lady for the first time! Mary appeared to Juan Diego for the first time on December 9 and the miracle of the tilma took place on December 12—it was the Advent Season. Mary appears pregnant - she carries the unborn Jesus in her womb and so, Pope John Paul II declared her the “Protector of Unborn Children” - Our Lady of Guadalupe stands for Life in a culture of death! Saint John Paul II had a great love for Our Lady of Guadalupe. It was the first Marian Shrine he visited as Pope in 1979 and the one he returned to the most in his years as Pope. A few years ago Pope Francis, sent a message to all of America reminding us of the importance of this day for our times. Today, I think it is important to share his message with each of us. Tomorrow is the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the Patroness of the Americas I would like to greet all my brothers and sisters on that continent and I do so thinking of the Virgin of Tepeyac. When Our Lady appeared to Saint Juan Diego, her face was that of a women of mixed blood, a mestiza, and her garments bore many symbols of the native culture. Like Jesus, Mary is close to all her sons an daughters; as a concerned mother, she accompanies them on their way through life. She shares all the joys and hopes, the sorrows and troubles of God’s people, which is made up of men and women of every race and nation. When the image of the Virgin appeared on the tilma of Juan Diego, it was the prophecy of an embrace: Mary’s embrace of all the peoples of the vast expanses of America —the peoples who already lived there, and those who were yet to come. Mary’s embrace showed what America– North and South—is called to be: a land where different people come together; a land prepared to accept human life at every stage, from the mother's womb to old age; a land which welcomes immigrants, and the poor and the marginalized, in every age. A land of generosity. That is the message of Our Lady of Guadalupe and it is also my message, the message of the Church. I ask all the people of the Americas to open wide their arms, like the Virgin, with love and tenderness. May we open wide our arms, especially to the young and the poor of Port Chester/Rye Brook in this year of our final merger! God bless you!
