Since 1951, the Cardinal McIntyre Fund for Charity has offered hope for those in crisis situations throughout the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. On May 3-4, all parishes in the Archdiocese will take up this Annual Collection. Your contribution goes directly toward emergency needs for children, adults and families and provides one-time emergency help for food, utilities, medical, housing or funeral expenses. The goal of the Fund is service to the "neediest of the needy," those for whom no other resources exist. Please be as generous as possible. Special envelopes are in the pews.

Stewardship . . . moving us closer to GodOnce again it seems like the calendar year and the liturgical year are flying by. We began the new liturgical year on the First Sunday of Advent, December 1st. Following Christmas we celebrated the Feast of the Holy Family, the Epiphany, and the Baptism of the Lord. Then we had several Sundays of Ordinary Time. Lent was next and now Easter is a week behind us. But Easter is not over. The next Sundays will be joyful celebrations of the Lord's Resurrection and his sending forth of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost. Please keep the Easter Spirit alive for as long as you can.By my count, we are about 17 weeks into the Liturgical year. The "big" Holydays are behind us and we are experiencing longer and warmer days and possibly a more secular way of life. As a result we may find

ourselves putting our spiritual life on the back burner because of all the family activities happening in the spring and summer. The Lord gave us so much during the days leading up to His Passion and Resurrection. As stewards we recognize and embrace His gifts. Think of every Mass as a mini-Easter. The words at the Consecration

evoke images of the Last Supper so that even in Ordinary Time we are always celebrating the Resurrection. And so, Happy Easter!

stephen ministry …now for a little while, you may have to suffer through various trials…When we’re faced with life’s trials, we sometimes experience doubts about ourselves and about God, as Thomas does in today’s gospel. Having someone as your partner during the hard times can help to lift you through them and see you back to a better place. A Stephen Minister can be that confidential partner. If you are hurting, leave a message on our confidential phone line, 310-545-8244. Deacon Dick and Patti Williams will meet with you to explore whether a Stephen Minister may be a good fit for you.

The vision of American Martyrs as a parish is to be "a Welcoming Community."

This calls all of us, as parishioners, to take part in making our community

a "welcoming place."We ask you to please take one weekend

and model this spirit by serving as a Greeter at Mass.

Our parishioners are of all ages so we would like greeters

of all ages on our front steps. Whether you are a long-time parishioner

or new to the parish, young or old, single, a couple or a family with young

children, you arrive at the Mass of your choosing 15 minutes early and model the

welcoming attitude that Pope Francis has called us to.

Go to the AM website, see our Orientation notes and video and schedule your Mass. It's that

The ArT of SpiriTuAl DirecTionSpiritual direction is an ancient ministry, a unique one-to-one relationship in which a trained person assists another person in the search for an ever closer union of love with God. Directors listen carefully to the unfolding of directees' lives to help them discern the ways in which God is leading them. The practice of spiritual direction consists much more of "holy listening" rather than direction in the sense of offering guidance or direct advice.American Martyrs Church maintains a list of Certified Spiritual Directors who have received training, formation, and are members of Spiritual Directors International. They are committed to spiritual growth, both personally and with those they accompany on their journey. For more information and help finding a Certified Spiritual Director, contact Jenny Attanasio, 310-545-5651.

“Lord, you have passed over into new life, and you now invite us to pass over also. We pray that as we turn to you, our faces will never look back. Instead, like you, let us make heaven on earth in our hearts.” -- St. Bernard of Clairvaux 12th c.

The effect of God’s grace is to bring us back to our original and intended course, with a yearning for increased holiness and infinite goodness. God’s grace is experienced in many ways and times, and particularly in prayer. It is our experience of God’s grace that can then be reflected back to all of life. Please join us in prayer for this Easter season. We begin with a brief reading, followed by two periods of silent prayer, closing with “Our Father” Newcomers are always welcome. Please join us once, often or always, for the Love of it! SAFEGUARD THE CHILDRENRecognizing signs of child abuse and neglect

A key to reporting child abuse and neglect is being able to recognize common indicators. In children, the following signs may signal the presence of child abuse or neglect: Shows sudden changes in behavior or school performance. Has not received help for physical or medical problems brought to the parents’ attention. Is always watchful, as though preparing for something bad to happen. Is overly compliant, passive, or

withdrawn. Comes to school or other activities early, stays late, and does not want to go home.To learn more about child abuse prevention, visit: h t t p : / / w w w.l a - a r c h d i o c e s e . o r g / o r g / p r o t e c t i n g / Pa g e s / d e f a u l t . a s p x . Celebrate the Feast of Divine Mercy TODAYSunday, April 27 - 11:30aM Mass

Holy Mass – Chaplet – Adoration – Benediction“It is important that we accept the whole message that comes to us from the Word of God on this Second Sunday of Easter,

which from now on throughout the Church will be called “Divine Mercy Sunday.” Homily of Pope John Paul II – April 30, 2000

In observing The Feast of Divine Mercy we should:• Celebrate the Feast of Divine Mercy Sunday• Sincerely repent of all our sins• Place our complete trust in Jesus• Go to confession before the feast day• Receive Holy Eucharist on the feast day• Venerate the Image of the Divine Mercy• Be merciful to others in word, action, and prayerIn St. Faustina’s vision Jesus said: “My image already is in your soul. I desire that there be a Feast of Mercy. I want this image, which you will paint with a brush, to be solemnly blessed on the first Sunday after Easter; that Sunday is to be the Feast of Mercy. I desire that priests proclaim this great mercy of Mine towards souls of sinners. Let the sinner not be afraid to approach Me. The flames of mercy are burning Me - clamoring to be spent; I want to pour them out upon these souls.”

To ensure that the faithful would observe this special day with intense devotion, Pope John Paul II established that Mercy Sunday be enriched by a PLENARY INDULGENCE under the usual conditions.

Contact Bardy Ryan, 310-796-1594, for more information.
