FROM THE DESK OF THE PASTOR Dear Parishioners, On October 22, 2018 my six-year assignment as pastor of St. Eulalia was completed. At
the time, I did not request from the Cardinal another six-year term knowing that in April,
2019, I would be turning seventy-five years old. At the age of seventy-five, pastors are
asked by Canon Law to submit their resignation to their bishop. Cardinal O’Malley has
officially accepted my resignation and granted me senior priest/retirement status. This
does not mean that I am retiring from priestly ministry but from holding pastoral office
(example: pastor, parochial vicar). This action takes effect on July 1, 2019.
At the same time, the Cardinal is appointing Rev. John G. Kiley who is, at present, pastor
of St. Ann Parish in Salem, MA, to be Temporary Administrator of St. Eulalia Parish.
(Parishes in the Archdiocese of Boston are assigned administrators and not pastors until
the parish enters into an actual collaborative process or is declared to be a “stand alone”
parish.)
As of July 1, I will not be completely disappearing from the scene. St. Eulalia will con-
tinue to be my official residence for the coming year and during the year I will be in, out
and about. However, it is important that Fr. Kiley be seen and recognized as the “new
boss.”
One of the blessings of St. Eulalia Parish is that its pastoral life is not invested exclusive-
ly in the pastor. There are many activities that take place in the parish which are initiated
by the laity and sustained through the laity’s efforts, and this is a good thing. Pastors
come and go, but the people who live in this area and who worship and fellowship at St.
Eulalia are the heart of the parish. No question the pastor can set the tone, and I trust that
the tone I have set has been helpful, at least to some.
In the meanwhile, I will continue to pull together a few loose ends here at the parish be-
fore I hand over the reins so as to make the administrative tasks as easy as I can for Fr.
Kiley. I ask that you continue to support the parish through your prayers, efforts, and par-
ticipation in the OSR.
Many Blessings,
![Page 3: Second Sunday of Lent...Responsorial Psalm 27:1, 7–8, 8–9, 13–14 The Lord is my light and my salvation. Second Reading Philippians 3:17-4:1 or 3:20-4:1 Paul urged the Philippians](https://reader035.vdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022071017/5fd0f504d1546910d149de6e/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)

SCRIPTURE FOR MARCH 17
First Reading Genesis 15:5–12, 17–18 (27C) God appeared to Abram and made a covenant to his faith-ful servant, promising many descendants and much land. Abram put faith in the Lord, who credited it to him as righteousness. Responsorial Psalm 27:1, 7–8, 8–9, 13–14 The Lord is my light and my salvation. Second Reading Philippians 3:17- 4:1 or 3:20-4:1 Paul urged the Philippians to follow his example: “Therefore, my brothers and sisters, whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, in this way stand firm in the Lord.” Gospel Luke 9:28b–36 Jesus took Peter, James, and John up a mountain to pray. There he was transfigured before their eyes. A cloud over-shadowed them, and a voice said, “This is my chosen Son; listen to him.”

CRS RICE BOWL This Lent, CRS (Catholic Relief Services) Rice Bowl invites you, your family and community to journey alongside the Good Samaritan, to reflect on the ques-tion: Who is my neighbor? So many of our neighbors are on the move: migrants, refugees, internally dis-placed persons, travelers. The Good Samaritan, a trav-eler himself once on the move, shows us what it means to encounter the stranger, to accompany one in need and to become a companion on the journey. Pope Francis has invited Catholics to build bridges of understanding and hospitality with migrants and refu-gees through “Share the Journey” campaign. Rice bowls are available in the foyer and at each entrance.

THE IMMIGRANT EXPERIENCE
A special performance of “The Immigrant Experi-ence”, a cantata by John Kramer, will be presented on Sunday, March 24, 4:00PM at St. Mary, 158 Wash-ington St., Winchester.
The piece will be performed by a coalition choir of local congregations including St. Eulalia and St. Mary, among others.
This timely and topical piece, which will be conducted by Mr. Kramer, reflects the issues surrounding immi-gration, and features texts by founding fathers that es-tablished the United States as a welcoming place.
The suggested donation is $20, the proceeds of which will benefit the International Institute of New England, a non-profit organization that has been serving refu-gees and immigrants since 1918.
PRO-LIFE THOUGHTS

THE UNBROKEN WORD………………………..……...……….……..by Michael J. Cunningham
Lent is a great time to reflect. We often look at how we are doing in our own spiritual life and how best we
might be able to improve ourselves and our relationship with Christ. Noble goals and efforts. Some of you
may have attended the Lenten retreat this week, led by Fr. Paul Fagan. Others may be on your own Lenten
journey, perhaps helped by some written materials, or practices to help stimulate our active participation in
this season.
My own season has started out with a slightly different bent than in previous years. I also have felt that I am
in the driving seat as to what is on my “Lenten Bucket List” for the year. As a child, it might have been
chocolate, which made Easter Sunday all the sweeter. Excuse the pun. In adulthood, I have tried to focus on
issues which are character flaws, or a propensity to sin or deviate from the Word in some way or others.
This year was different.
Instead of looking inward, which has been my wont in the past; I am being drawn to look at something dif-
ferent? How others see me, and my actions in the world? The cause and effect of my work in the Church,
and my work as a manager in a retreat ministry setting? I must admit, after decades of managing projects
and people, I have often relied on others being focused on the same goals, creating a good work ethic and a
positive (but truth filled) atmosphere as being enough. Now I am beginning to see that perhaps it is not.
While we all look for affirmation that our work is appreciated and understood, we sometimes don’t do that
second “mirror check” to see if the traffic is still following us before we make the maneuver into the next
lane. There may be someone in our blind spot who is not in the place we expected them to be.
While it can be simpler just to tell someone whether they are wrong, and not following the instructions, di-
rections or guidance we give them, it may not be enough. Perhaps there have been years of practice in place
which are now been put into question. Maybe some of the practices are there for a reason. And even if they
are not, we should respect them for what they were at the time.
So, Lent this year will be a seri-
ous gaze into the lives of others
around me; to see how I might
appear to them if I was on the
receiving end of my behavior,
not just trying to correct what I
think might need fixing.
St. Theresa of Avilia, the great
mystic noted that God is pre-
sent “in the pots and pans” of
our lives, not just the special
prayer times. It is there we of-
ten have the most encounters
with others, so let’s ask our-
selves the questions of how are
we doing from the perspective
of those around us. We might
have a very different response
than our own answer to this
question. Copyright 2019 Reflection and Photography, Michael J. Cunningham O.F.S.
