The Sevententh Sunday after Pentecost and theSecond Sunday of Luke

FOR NON-ORTHODOX CHRISTIANS We welcome all people across all religions to pray with us. However, it is an unfortunate consequence that there are divisions in Christianity, and therefore, we cannot extend to you a general invitation to receive the Eucharist (Holy Communion). Orthodox Christians believe that the Eucharist is an action of the celebrating community, signifying a oneness in faith, life, and worship. Reception of the Eucharist by Christians not fully united with the Orthodox Church would imply a oneness, which does not yet exist, and for which we must all pray. We invite you to receive the blessed and holy bread that is given out to all at the end of the service, and are very pleased that you are with us this morning.

THE SYNAXARION On October 1 in the Holy Orthodox Church we commemorate the holy Apostle Ananias of the Seventy, first bishop of Damascus. Ananias is the Greek form of Hananiah, which is Hebrew for Yahweh [God] is gracious. In accordance with to Gods revelation (Acts 9:10-17), he baptized Saul (the Apostle Paul). Because of his courageous preaching of the Gospel, Ananias was stoned to death in the town of Eleutheropolis. His holy relics were taken to Damascus and later to Constantinople. Ananias famous house still exists today, located about one mile from the Cathedral of the Dormition of the Theotokos (al-Mariamiyeh) and the headquarters of the Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch in Damascus, Syria. The house is now the Chapel of Saint Ananias, located on the Street Called Straight, resting 16 feet below ground at the level of the Roman street in the first century. On October 1, we also commemorate the Martyr Domninos of Thessalonica; Venerable John Koukouzelis and Gregory the Domestikos of the Great Lavra on Athos; and Venerable Sabbas of Vishera of Russia. By their intercessions, O Christ God, have mercy upon us. Amen.

  • Troparion of Resurrection (Tone Eight) From the heights Thou didst descend, O compassionate One, and Thou didst submit to the three-day burial, that Thou might deliver us from passion; Thou art our life and our Resurrection, O Lord, glory to Thee.

Troparion of St. Ananias (Tone Three) O holy Apostle Ananias, intercede with our merciful God to grant our souls forgiveness of sins.

Troparion of St. Romanos (Tone Eight) Through thee, the divine likeness was securely preserved, O father Romanos; for thou didst carry the cross and follow Christ. By example and precept thou didst teach us to ignore the body, because it is perishable, and to attend to the concerns of the undying soul. Therefore, doth thy soul rejoice with the angels.

  • Troparion of St. George the Great Martyr (Tone 4)

As deliverer of captives, and defender of the poor, healer of the infirm, champion of kings: Victorious Great Martyr George, intercede with Christ our God for our souls salvation.

Kontakion of the Theotokos (Tone Two) O protection of Christians that cannot be put to shame, mediation unto the Creator most constant, O despise not the suppliant voices of those who have sinned; but be thou quick, O good one, to come unto our aid, who in faith cry unto thee: Hasten to intercession, and speed thou to make supplication, thou who dost ever protect, O Theotokos, them that honor thee.

    ( ) . . . . : . .

For Our Lady of Cicero - Only at St George in Cicero (Tone 8) To thee the champion leader, I thy city ascribe thank-offerings of victory. For thou hast delivered me from terrors O Theotokos. But as thou hast that power which is invincible. From all dangers set me free that I may cry out unto thee: Hail, O Bride without Bridegroom.

  • Epistle Reading for the Seventeenth Sunday after Pentecost

Make your vows to the Lord our God and perform them. God is known in Judah; His Name is great in Israel. The Reading from the Second Epistle of St. Paul to the Corinthians. (6:16-7:1) Brethren, we are the temple of the living God; as God said, I will live in them and move among them, and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. Therefore, come out from them, and be separate from them, says the Lord, and touch nothing unclean; then I will welcome you, and I will be a father to you, and you shall be My sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty. Since we have these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and spirit, and make holiness perfect in the fear of God.

Gospel for theSecond Sunday of Luke The Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Luke. (6:31-36) The Lord said: As you wish that men would do to you, do so to them. If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to receive as much again. But love your enemies , and do good, and lend,
