Lenten Order of Penitents

L ent has undergone many changes during the past two thousand years

of feasts and seasons. In addition to a period of personal penance and spiritual renewal, it has a strong communal di-mension as expressed in the concept that we are “Companions to one anoth-

er on the life’s Journey.” It is also a time of final prepa-ration for those who seek to enter the Church through the Easter Sacraments. In both cases, we realize that we are members of a larger church than just our local parish.

By joining the Order of Penitents 2014, you ex-press your desire to take this season seriously and in-vite the Church to accompany you through the support of our prayers and works of charity. There is NO dead-line to enroll. Cards are available in the church Com-mons or on the parish website. Names are placed upon the altar throughout this holy season.

LENTEN PRAYER POT

Directions: Mold and form clay (available at craft stores) into a shallow bowl or pot. The pot will air-dry in 24 hours then can be painted. Optional: Use a toothpick to make designs or write the year.

Each week during Lent, read the scripture, and work together to find the symbol of the prayer for that week Week I - A red heart to remind of God's love for us

and that nothing can separate us from his love. Ro-mans 8: 38 & 39

Week II - A small bean to remind us that we are growing in our relationship with God and that we should tend to it the way we would a growing plant. Colossians 1: 10-12

Week III - An almond, an ancient symbol of patience, to remind us that God is patient with us and that we should be patient with others. Ephesians 4: 2

Week IV - A piece of bread to remind us to share with others. Hebrews 13: 16

Week V - A band aid to remind us to help those who are hurt or sad. I Thessalonians 5: 13b

Holy Week - A piece of purple felt to remind us that Jesus is our King. Colossians 1: 15-20

Easter - A small stone to remind us of the empty tomb and that Jesus is with us. Matthew 28: 1-8; 18-20

A NOTE OF THANKS Thanks to everyone who helped with the Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper in order to make it such a great night! We had a wonderful turnout and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves, especially the chil-dren. We would like to thank the Hospitality Team, Event Team, Women’s Club and several other Minis-tries and volunteers that made this event possible. Sincere THANKS to parishioners and friends for joining in our Mardi Gras celebration!

LENTEN REMINDER OLD PALMS may be deposited in the box found at the bell tower entrance to the church Commons. These will be burned and used for Ashes next year.

Our Best Lent

T he best Lent is one in which we enter the season wholeheartedly. All too often, people either take

on too much or don’t take on enough. The solution is to simplify our disciplines, focus our intentions and concen-trate more clearly on our spiritual goals. To keep it sim-ple this Lent, try the “1-1-1 Plan”: one sin, one add-in, one give-up:

Concentrate or focus on one sin or fault that is getting in the way of your relationship with God and with others. If you need help in identifying which sin to concentrate on this year, ask God in prayer to reveal it to you. Also consider the 7 deadly sins which engender other sins or other vices. They are pride, greed, envy, wrath (anger), lust, gluttony and sloth (laziness).

Add one positive activity that will deepen your prayer and spiritual life (especially if you think you are too busy to put anything more into an impossibly busy schedule!). Because we are all so busy, it’s a good idea to not just pick an add in, but to schedule a regular time when you put it on your calendar so you don’t forget. Some ideas include attend Mass in the middle of the week, spend an hour in adoration, read the bible, and/or get up early to pray.

Deny yourself something you really like or are attached to. Just make sure it is something that lets you feel the deprivation and is at least a little bit challenging. Make it difficult but doable.
