Eco Week

Introduction Eco Week 2018 was held from 15th – 19th January. It was highly successful and students got in-volved in a variety of different activities. During the first part of the week, students presented their student led eco projects to one another. Each year group researched a specific issue related to the environment and taught other students about this issue and what they can do to help reduce it. All students did a great job but 9A2 were the group which stood out and they won a prize for their ef-forts. Their video and activities on ocean acidification and plastic pollution were sobering and in-teractive. Well done 9A2! On Thursday 18th January, an activity day was held for all students and the purpose of the activity day was for students to reconnect with their environment and for them to think of creative and practical ways in which they can be more environmentally conscious individuals. The activities in-cluded were : Inya Lake Paddle Boarding, Sailing & Trash Hero Trip On Thursday 18th January 35 students arrived at Yangon Sailing Club ready to take part in the Dis-cover Sailing Programme. After being introduced to the history of the sailing club, a fun packed morning was spent trying out stand up paddle boarding, dinghy sailing and viewing Inya lake from a motorboat ride. The students threw themselves in to all of the activities, and some even managed to throw themselves in to the lake! After a well earned lunch break, the students split in to Team Aqua and Team Earth and started out with Trash Hero to clean up the lake and the surrounding area. Team Earth set out on foot and Team Aqua took paddle boards, motor boats, nets and buckets and got out on the water again. After an hour and a half, a massive 110 kg of trash had been collect-ed from the area and sent for proper disposal. The students worked really hard to make the trip rewarding, and very successful!

Kalitaw School Kalitaw School is a small school of about 50 students and two teachers located in Hlegu Township.

There is no government school in the area so the school relies on donations. The school was initial-

ly built of bamboo until it was rebuilt in 2016 by Jeff Parry, owner of Bike World Myanmar. One of

the main aims of the school for the 2017/18 year was to ‘enhance garden space with knowledge to

feed students and offer improved nutrition’. The 21 students from Network who visited the school

donated 110, 000 Kyat towards buying seeds, fertiliser and plant pots. Whilst at the school the stu-

dents created three large garden beds planting pumpkin, rock melon and beans. They also planted

5 mango trees, about 15 lychee trees and a handful of papaya and grapefruit. Some of the students

presented a wonderful English lesson to the local students for an hour, fun was had by all. The stu-

dents walked 15km in total over the day, which was tough for some of younger ones. The Network

students were a credit to their school, their hard work has provided plants, trees and seeds that

will give a nutritious diet for the students of the school for many years to come.

Bike Word Trip A mountain bike trip took place in the same area as the Kalitaw School. The bike trip was run with Jeff Parry, owner of Bike World Myanmar. A group of 13 students were equipped with state of the art Trek mountain bikes and helmets and they set out an white knuckle ride through the Myanmar countryside. They cycled around 30km in total, which is a massive achievement. The students had a chance to interact with local villagers on the route and admire the beautiful scenery. Overall, a fantastic day and the students should be really proud of their determination and hard work! Other activities The rest of the students did activities in school which included creating a beautiful mural design from recycled items, survival skills, cooking class, programming vegetables to make music, eco fashion design and upcycling. All the students had great fun and had the opportunity to learn some new skills and think of ways in which they can be creative with their waste. Eco Club students and Year 11 students had the opportunity to carry out a beach clean up to Ngwe

Saung which ran Friday – Sunday. More information about this is on the following page.

Eco Week

Ngwe Saung Trip After meeting with Phone Kyaw Moe Myint (the head of Trash Hero Myanmar) in December the Eco-Club decided to organise a trip to Ngwe Saung to investigate the environmental issues affect-ing the local area. The students in Eco-Club and year 11 created a presentation, involving video and stop-motion, telling the story of a straw and a fish. The tale of ‘Stan the Straw’ and ‘Fin the Fish’ begins with Stan being thrown into the ocean, meanwhile Fin is an orphan as his family have been killed by destructive fishing practices. At the end of the story Stan and Fin cross paths, lead-ing to a tragic ending. Fin eats Stan then dies due to the toxic levels of micro-plastics in his body. The story highlights environmental issues in the area including; trawler fishing, cyanide fishing, ghost fishing, blast fishing and the increasing levels of plastics in the ocean (currently a third of fish are found to have micro-plastics in their stomachs). The students presented to 25 local stu-dents and their teachers, then organised an activity to draw attention to the increasing levels of toxicity in the food chain. Late in the afternoon the students enjoyed surf lessons on the beach. The next day involved a Trash Hero beach clean-up with the 25 local students who attended the

presentation the previous day. By lunchtime we had collected 110kg of rubbish along a 2km

stretch of beach. The waste situation in Ngwe Saung is getting worse, but there are ways to com-

bat the issue. The students, both local and international, had a brainstorming session and have

come up with solutions to the plastic pollution problem. These have been forwarded to the head of

Trash Hero and if all goes well a bigger event will be organised later in the year. The students met

a Brazilian couple writing a travel blog about good deeds being done around the world. If you

would like to read the article, then go to http://petecar.com.br/en/blog-de-viagens-trash-hero/.

The Year 10 global perspectives group wanted to highlight the need for a healthy diet and exercise

to give a healthy body and mind. The group conducted their own research about diet and exercise

practices across the school and from the results decided to hold an assembly to try and change the

schools ways and become healthier. We learnt a great deal from the assembly, such as, apples

wake us up better than coffee does and eating a variety of fruits and vegetables helps to boost our

minds as well as making our bodies healthier. We learnt some easy exercises, which can be done at

home as well as in the gym and learnt about the importance of exercise. Year 10 are hoping to con-

duct a follow up survey to find out the results – let’s see if we are a fitter healthier school!

Spelling Bee

Network Students Compete At The Annual BISA Spelling Bee For the third year running Network International School sent a strong team to the annual Spelling Bee Competition at BISA. The purpose of the contest is to help students improve their spelling, in-crease their vocabulary, learn concepts and develop correct English usage that will help them through their lives. After a hard fought competition and a tough first round between as many as 300 students per section, two Network students made it through to the final round which consisted of just 20 students. We are very proud of all our students who participated in the Spelling Bee and we look forward to competing strongly again next year.

Shakespeare Theatre Group

On Tuesday 13th February, The HandleBards visited Network International School to perform Shakespeare's ‘As You Like It’. The HandleBards are a wildly entertaining, hilarious and envi-ronmentally friendly theatre troupe from the UK, who cycle to different venues around the world performing various Shakespearean plays. The all-female troupe started with a quick summary of the play so that students could keep track of the story. The performance was outrageously funny with some hilarious audience participation by Tr Stephen and Tr Will. It was an energetic, excit-ing and engaging performance thoroughly enjoyed by students and teachers.

Book Week A student’s reading skills are very important to their success in school as it allows them to access the full school curriculum while also improving their communication and language skills. Reading can also be fun and imaginative and opens doors to all kinds of new worlds for students. But it is important to recognise that there are two sides to reading. One side is skill and the other side is will. It is a skill to be able to recognise words and comprehend meaning but it is an entirely different thing to have the will to read. A good reader has both skill and will! And here at Network International School, Book Week is all about motivating our students to read more. This year’s Book Week was full of interesting and engaging activities which we hope have inspired our students to read more and share in the joy of reading with others. Some of the key events that took place were: Story Telling: During SSR time teachers read to their tutor groups. This proved a really enjoyable experience for students with Tr Kate’s reading of The Twits being a huge hit! Paired Reading: Year 7 students went to Bahan Campus for a paired reading activity with the primary stu-dents. Studies show that paired reading programs are an excellent way to address the learning needs of both younger and older students. Such activities help students improve their reading and fluency skills and gain broader literacy and social benefits. This was a truly worthwhile and enriching experience for all students involved. Author Visit: It was a great pleasure to welcome Hein Latt into the school on Friday afternoon as our guest inspirational speaker. Hein Latt is a local author and translator who talked to the students about how to be the best students. He spoke passionately about how hard work and dedication are the key to success. Dress up: The highlight of the week was dressing up as some well known characters from literature, with some great costumes on display!

On Tuesday the 27th February a number of students travelled to MISY for the very first annual Inter-national Schools Poetry Slam Competition in Yangon. A poetry slam is a competition in which poets read or recite their own original work. It was a truly wonderful day with an amazing showcase of talent across all schools on display. We had 21 students participating from Network. We are ex-tremely proud of all our students for the courage they showed in putting themselves forward and sharing their creative pieces with so many people. It was a truly enriching and worthwhile experi-ence for both teachers and students. During this week the students had a little break from normal routine studies from time to time and were engaged in other educational activities. One of the activities they were encouraged to play was the online ‘Worldmathsday’ challenge. This activity will allow the student to challenge other students from the same class, school or from another country at different levels. The students enjoyed this activity. 14th March was International Pi day which was celebrated all over the world. We celebrated by do-ing activities in the classroom organised by their respective maths teachers. We had our annual ‘Maths Quiz’ house competition on Friday (16th). This was organised by the teachers in the maths department. Sapphire house came first. Ruby came second. Diamond and Em-erald came third in a tie. Year 9 War Cemetary Visit

On Wednesday 28th February the year 9 students took a trip to Tuakkyan cemetery as an education-

al visit and to pay their respects to those who served in Myanmar during World War Two. Year 9 are

currently studying the events of the second world war and have just begun to look at all the differ-

ent nationalities that lost their lives fighting here. Visiting the immaculately well kept cemetery real-

ly made the reality of the consequences of war vividly apparent to the students. The students were

asked to write an epitaph for the unknown soldiers buried at Tuakkyan cemetery. Shwe Yee Pwint

wrote a particularly powerful piece which she read out at the memorial; Gone, but never forgotten.

Your sacrifice has been noticed. Your bravery has been recognised. Your courage has been proven. It

takes a man of the strongest will to be able to step onto a battlefield where you might not make it back.

The world and your country will always remember you. Your services have been proven to be worthy.

U Thant House School Visit

On Wednesday 21st the year 10s enjoyed an educational trip to U Thant's house in Yangon. U Thant was the General Secretary of the United Nations from 1961-1971. He was notably instru-mental in defusing the Cuban Missile crisis and averting a full scale nuclear war. Born January 22, 1909, in Pantanaw, Myanmar, U Thant was the third General Secretary and the first non- Europe-an to be bestowed the role. The trip complimented perfectly the international relations unit that the year ten students are currently studying. It even inspired two year ten girls, Yu Waddy Aung and Han Yin Win Lett to join the model united nations committee that will be debating next month. Fellow impressed year 10s shared their opinions; "It was an interesting experience to find out what U Thant has done for the world." Thyn Syt Nyein, "He was a great man" Joshua Tangi-ataua.

U19 Football - Galilee orphanage

On Monday 19th February Network invited Galilee orphanage to play an U19’s boys friendly foot-ball fixture. The game was played in great spirit with both teams displaying excellent skill and great sportsmanship. The game was well matched but came to a close with Network winning 7-5. Man of the match went to the Galilee goal keeper who had cat like reactions to save some impressive shots. Both teams enjoyed a match dinner after the game and we look forward to seeing these two teams play together again.

U19 Girls Basketball

The Girls have continued their unbeaten season seeing spectacular victories against MISY, MIS, ISM & YA. The whole team performance has shown accuracy in attack and their resilience in defence to keep out their opponents and secure their healthy score line in these matches. This momentum Principal Carl and his team are building put them in a strong position for the up and coming MISAC tournament and we look forward to seeing them develop further with each game that they play.

The boys’ team have seen success and defeat this season but have developed as a team. A highlight of the season was a ‘nail biting’ finish again YIS seeing Network behind by 6 points into the closing moments of the 4th quarter. With precision 3 point shots from Henry Lin and Khant Naing brought us level at the buzzer of full time. This brought us into extra time. This was quite possibly the most physical match to date with both teams hungry for the victory. With the closing seconds of the game Frank found Josh open in the key to set him up for the lay-up that won Network the game.

With Narrow losses against MIS and YA the team look forward to getting back to winning ways for the up and coming tournament this weekend.

U14 Football The U14 Girls and Boys teams continue to show their natural ability and talent on the football pitch adding to their unbeaten seasons with superb wins against ISM, MISY & MIS. This year there has been an excellent commitment from Year 7 students in both girls and boys’ teams showing their skill and potential for the future. Namely Jimmy, Chris, MKK, MKT, View, Albert, Noel and for the girls Sophie, Thitsar, Rebecca, Ting Ting & Kalila. All results were true team performances and they are really putting what they have put into practice during training session thanks to Tr Owen, Tr Simon & Tr Ji Eun. 7-5 boys MISY 3-0 girls MISY MIS girls 6-1

Sports Events Track & Field Event

Track & field - ISM ISM hosted a track and field event at Kyaikkasan Grounds and this was Network's first event of the season. For the majority of students this was their first experience in this competitive environment and the first time competing in certain events. Despite this Network demonstrated what excellent athletic ability they have with their strength as individuals and as a team to get the results. Below is a list of performers with their places. Out of the 7 schools that competed that day we finished 4th overall which is not bad considering the small squad size we had that day. We look forward to their next event as we have no doubt Network will continue to impress.

Volleyball Both Girls and Boys teams finished 2nd place in the MISAC U14 Volleyball tournament. This was both the first year in Network history a U14 team has been entered into the tournament. With train-ing and games being the a first time for all players I am very impressed with how well we have done in this competition. With this foundation set, I look to seeing these players progress with the skills learnt into the U19 team and for the younger players in the team to continue their success in next years U14 competition. Big thanks for Tr Ji Eun who has done an incredible job with the girls Vol-leyball team.

On Saturday 17 March 2018 the Girls basketball team won the MISAC Under 19 basketball tourna-ment for the third year running. On Thursday the girls won all their groups games to finish top of Pool B and then defeated MIS 33 - 8 in the semi final on Saturday morning and they then followed this up by beating ISM 30 - 9 in the final. In the last three years this team has played in five MISAC basketball tournaments at Under 15 and Under 19 level and won all of them which is an incredible achievement.

MOUSTACHES FOR MOVEMBER

Teachers Brad, Stephen Holmes & John from the secondary school together with Teachers Craig, Stephen Salter & Jamie from the primary school spent the month of November growing out their moustaches for "Movember". This event was to raise awareness and help dontate to a fantastic cause which has effected many of us. Money raised by parents and students went towards U Hla Tun Hospice Cancer Foundation. The total amount raised came to 423,300 MMK. A very big "Thank You" for all those who donated.
