Wilson’s Fourteen Points• Wilson had a vision of a just & lasting peace
• Believed all people had the right to national self-determination (people have the right to decide how they should be governed)
Fourteen Points Highlights
• Created new nations• Free trade• Freedom of seas• End to secret treaties• Limit on arms (weapons)• Peaceful settlement of disputes over colonies• Creation of the League of Nations (International
that would preserve peace & prevent war)
European Allies disagree• Didn’t invite Germany or Russia to peace talks
• Didn’t support Wilson’s Fourteen Points
• European Allies wanted REVENGE for WWI
• Wanted to break up Germany
Treaty of Versailles• Germany must accept full responsibility for the war• Germany must pay 32 billion dollars in reparations. • Germany had to disarm completely• Germany lost its colonies• Broke up Austro-Hungarian Empire• Took land away from Russia• Created the League of Nations
