Joints for Polymeric Insulated Cables 72 kV
Designed for easy jointingThe Raychem joint design comprisesof a connector that allows even largecross-sections to be jointed and twodual-wall, heat-shrinkable sleeves. A heavy-walled co-extrusion of twolayers of red insulation forms theinner sleeve. The outer sleeve con-sists of a thick layer of red insulationco-extruded under a black outer con-ductive layer which acts as the jointscreen.
Controlled-torque connectorThe connector design allows cablesto be jointed without special tools, heat treatment or filing off afterinstallation. Shear-head bolts ensurea pre-engineered electrical connec-tion. In developing this new connec-tor, much effort was devoted to simplifying the installation steps.Consequently, the key reliability features are engineered into the connector, before it leaves the factory. The outside surface isalready machined smooth. Theshear-head bolts break off at a pre-determined level below the outersurface of the connector, at adefined torque. This ensures the correct contact pressure is reachedevery time. Oxide-breaking and corrosion prevention is performedby the contact grease inside the connector body. The stable voltagedrop provided by this concept hasbeen demonstrated in field installa-tions which closely follow the predictions of long-term load-cyclingtests.Comprehensive qualification procedures like IEC 61238-1996 andANSI 119.4 1993 prove the excellentlong-term performance.
This is the kit …The set of pre-engineered compo-nents and the Raychem connectorrequire no special installation tools. After placing the heat-shrinkablecomponents over the cable end, theconnector is installed by tighteningthe special bolts, which shear offcleanly when the correct contactforce is reached. Each sleeve in turnis placed over the connector areaand shrunk down. Copper shieldingmesh and an adhesive-coated outersleeve for water sealing then com-plete the joint.
Electrical stress controlA material with stress adjustingcharacteristics is applied onto theconnector and cable screen ends. This heat-shrinkable sleeve incor-porates a conductive coating in the connector area which equalizespotential in the manner of a Faradaycage. It extends over the dielectric to accommodate possible insulationshrink-back.
EPP0341 03.09.2002 11:33 Uhr Seite 2
Elastomeric TechnologyTwo dual-wall, heat-shrinkable elastomeric sleeves are at the heartof the joint. Because of the uniqueelastromeric technology used intheir manufacture, these dual-wallsleeves shrink rapidly and deliverpre-engineered, uniform layers ofthick insulation. In each case theouter wall of the co-extruded sleeveis heat-shrinkable, while the innerlayer is an elastomer held out in anexpanded form by the bond to theouter layer. Application of heat tothe outer wall causes it to shrink to a pre-determined diameter andsimultaneously allows the innerlayer to contract, conforming tightlyto the joint. In two short steps the installerapplies the required insulation thickness and joint screen. When the cable is in service the rubber-likecharacteristics of the insulation allowthe joint to conform to the dimensio-nal changes of the cable insulationduring load cycling.
Cross-bonding/shield breakThe use of heat-shrinkable sleevesfor stress control, insulation, andscreening provides a location for theshield break at the end of the joint. A mastic installed under the heat-shrinkable outer sleeve ensures highdielectric strength at this point. Thecross-bond can be made withoutinfluencing the electrical field in thejoint, and does not require any special additional components.Requirements according to IEEE # 575are fulfilled.
Outer sealingThe cable oversheath is replacedwith a thick-wall heat-shrinkableinsulating sleeve, which provides the required dielectric strength andis internally coated with a hot-meltadhesive. The heat of installationcauses the adhesive to melt andflow to create an effective water seal and corrosion protection.Grounding leads are sealed by an adhesive coated clip.

Major Design ElementsThe splice consists of connector (1),cable adaptors (2) – including stress cones and main splice body (3) – containing Faraday cage (4) and outer serving by heat-shrink techno-logy. The conductors of the cable are connected by a mechanical connector sleeve (1) using torque-controlled shear-off bolts. A metalshielding clamp (6) on top of the con-nector provides a smooth interface fit. A metal shielding clamp on top ofthis connector ensures perfect heattransmission. The fixing rings (5) keepthe cable dielectric in position.
The Si-rubber cable adaptors (2),accommodating the various cableinsulation diameters, will build up theconnection area to an almost constantdiameter. This makes it possible tocover four cross-section ranges withjust one main insulation splice body(3). Cross-section transitions are feasible without any extra compo-nents. No extra tooling is needed topush-on the Si-rubber cable adaptors(2) and the Si-rubber splice main body (3) due to its excellent elasticity.
Mechanical solderless connector tech-nologies (7) are used to connectmetal shields – copper wires, metalsheath and CAS.
Heat-shrink technologies (8,9) replacethe cable serving and the moisture barrier.
The joint concept is similar for theshield-break splices, despite theshield continuity. Special sealantcomponents make it possible to usecoaxial or double-insulated groundleads, and thereby to utilise theproven heat-shrink technology.

Termination Systems for Polymeric Insulated Cables 72 kV
Versatile useRaychem's 72 kV terminations aresuitable for all climates and environ-ments, even severely polluted areas, and for all installation conditions, including top feed installation. Thefactory-engineered kits contain aproven termination system whichsaves space, facilitates installationand enhances system reliability. Thespecial design of the termination, which incorporates pre-coated track-resistant sealants that melt duringthe shrinking process, results in areliable and lasting barrier againstmoisture and corrosion. Electrical stress control
Screened or shielded power cablesrequire electrical stress control inorder to reduce the electrical stressesat the end of the screen and at thetermination surface to avoid partialdischarge and surface corona underall service conditions. Corona orelectrical discharge can ultimatelydestroy the cable insulation, causingpremature failure.Raychem's stress control sleeveshave electrical properties that smoothout the electrical field at the end ofthe cable. This is achieved by theunique resistive and capacitive properties of the heat-shrinkablematerials.
This is the kit …The kit contains a limited number of light-weight components withunlimited shelf life under normalstorage conditions. The heat-shrink-able sleeves are extremely versatile, and accommodate a wide range ofcable diameters. Three basic kitscover all cable sizes, permittingreduced inventories and an efficientstocking policy. The light weight of the componentsand limited volume of the kits facili-tate safe and easy transportationand handling. All components areincluded in a single box.The set of pre-engineered compo-nents requires no special or expen-sive tools for installation. Installationinvolves a simple set of standardprocedures with no soldering re-quired. Neither does the terminationrequire filling with oil or compound.Risk of leakage is avoided, and fillingand topping-up time on the job siteis saved.
High-performance materialRaychem terminations are made of aspecially formulated material withexcellent tracking and erosion resis-tance characteristics. Acceleratedand natural weathering tests whichare constantly being carried out atRaychem facilities and independenttest sites around the world havedemonstrated that the terminationsare UV and water resistant and per-form reliably even when exposed tosudden temperature variations. A Tracking and Erosion Test as perASTM D2303 showed no tracking.IEC 112 was also conducted with noerosion or tracking observed.

Major Design Elements
An epoxy-resin insulator (3) with embedded multi-contact electrode forms the gas pressure-tight interface between GIS cable entry and ‘plug-in’ cabletermination.
Cable outer serving is adapted through a gland system (5), which addressesthe individual shielding and armouring and mechanical cable oversheath fixture including sealant by heat-shrink technology.
A torque-controlled shear-off bolt multi-contact connector (2) fits the cableconductor, thus ensuring a seal to the top assembly, without the need for special installation tools.
Si-rubber stress cone (4) provides the electrical field control and can easily be applied by hand owing to its excellent elasticity.
A metal spring-loaded compression ring (6) presses the rubber stress coneinto the resin housing, ensuring an electrically sound interface.
Various bus-bar extensions (1) accommodating different GIS specifications are available to fit the top electrode of the resin housing (3).
The same concept applies to a transformer cable entry, where a corona shieldis added to the top upper resin-housing electrode.
