    3.9 SOCIO-ECONOMIC ENVIRONMENT

    OBJECTIVES: The broad objectives of the socio-economic impact assessment are:

    1. Describing / Assessing Baseline Environmental and Socio-Economic conditions of the

    people living in the study area and their interactions with the existing Project

    2. To assess the impact on socio-economic environment due to the project concerned.

    3. To evaluate the community development measures proposed to be taken up by the

    Project Proponent, if any, voluntary or complied.

    4. To suggest community development measures that needs to be taken for the study

    area with stakeholder engagement.

    The studies carried out are descriptive and exploratory in nature and are done by FAE,

    Socio-Economic.

    Demographic Structure of the study area:

    Population in Core Zone

    There is no habitation in the Core Zone.

    Population in Buffer Zone

    The study area comprises of 16 villages, of Bhachau Tehsil in the (10.0 k.m.) of the study area. The

    total population of the study area is 58,734 accommodating in 13,147 households with an average

    households size of approx. 4 to 5 members per family.

    Gender Distribution

    The males in the study area constitute 51.52% and females constitute 48.47%. The gender ratio is

    940 in the study area, much below as compared to the district Kutch 908 as per the Census of

    India, 2011.

    Child Sex Ratio

    The below 06 years indicate the population growth rate in the region and is 16.40% of the total

    population. The boys under 06 years are 52.33% and the girls below 06 years are 47.66% of the

    total population below 06 Years with a gender ratio of 910. The gender ratio of Children is 910 in

    the study area, lower as compared to the Child Sex Ratio (CSR) of 921 in the District Kutch.

    Literacy Profile

    The average literacy rate of the study area is 52.80% much lower than the 70.59% of district

    Kutch as per Census of India, 2011. The male literacy is 62.61% with respect to male population

    and the female literacy is 42.35% with respect to female population. There is a high literacy gap is

    approx. 20.26%.

    Occupation Profile

    Occupational structure of the workforce indicates the economic activity. The occupational

    patterns include cultivators, agricultural labour, and household industry workers. The work

    participation rate is 33.56%. The employment rate in the 10.0 k.m. periphery for main workers,

    marginal workers and non workers are as follows:

    The Main workers constitute 29.72%; the male worker population is (26.47%) almost double of

    the female worker (03.25%) population.

    The Marginal workers constitute 3.84% with the male workers of 1.90% and female workers of

    1.93%.

    The Non Workers constitute 66.44% and distribution of men (24.15%) and women (43.29%)

    workers.

    Scheduled Tribe Population

    There is negligible tribal population found in the study area. The total tribal population of the

    study area is 0.91% of the total population as per the Census of India, 2018. Amongst the tribal

    population the (Males: 52.79% and Females are 47.20%), gender ratio is 893 , hence The male –

    female distribution amongst tribal’s in the buffer zone study area is lower as compared to the

    total gender ratio 911 in the study area and much lower than the District Kutch’s gender ratio of

    921.

    households in the study area own a Television & fridge, and Bicycle/ scooter. T.V. & Fridge were owned widely

    cut across all sections of income groups. None of the families surveyed in the habitation owned a washing

    machine except a few in Vondh. Most of the women in the households in Samakhyali were dependent on public

    transportation.

    It was found, in the study area that, the living conditions of the people were good. The gas stoves were mostly

    seen in Vondh and few others nearby localities. The tap water is provided by the authorities and hand pump are

    also available in villages. The Dish T.V. insatallation indicates the source of entertainment of the Villagers and

    exposure to the mass commnunication national channel and awareness levels in the study area.

    • Semi Permanent houses Semi Kuchha and Pucca House • Well connected by Kuccha Road. • Well electrified. • Source of Water – Borewell, water reservoirs, Govt. tap supply through Overhead community water tank.

    • Most Houses does not have Bathrooms, the villagers go out in the open defecation spaces.

    • They use more of the wood, dung cakes rather than gas stove.

    Retail options outside houses are a common practice. The public transport is largely fulfilled with Local taxis

    commonly called as ‘Jugad’

    Economic diversity of Nimbahera

    The elderly men of the habitaitons sit around the age

    old banyan trees playing cards. The women were found

    working both in the households and in the fields for

    farming in the study area. Major Occupation in the

    Study area is Agriculture and cultivation practices,

    Livestock & Dairy. The local area crops grown in the

    Arandi (Castor) is largely cultivated in the belt. Along with Castor,

    Bajra, Guar, Pulse, Chiku, Kela, & All vegetables viz tomatoes,

    carrots, Sweet Potato etc.

    There had been household retailing adopted in the vilages, eanbling Home Office Small Office concept in the

    Habitation. There are a potential of investments in industry trading warehouses of urban supplies. A large

    number of employment opportunities can be created through mini Start-ups in sales of household Solar panel

    businesses. The working population of the study area is engaged more in primary occupations i.e. agriculturist,

    laborer, followed by secondary occupations in Livestock for dairy.

    Mobility and Movement of local people from less developed villages to more developing areas of the district in

    search of better wages and livelihood for family and education for children. The residents engaged in Lorry &

    transportation are often out of homes for months for delivery.

    Culture & Mobility

    As told by the local men, the local communities in the region pray to the Mounds of their ancestors with the belief

    that they keep them safe and fulfill their wishes. The faith in the “Pitreshawar” is large amongst the residents.

    The principal communities in the study area are :

    Rabari are in

    percentages viz

    only 0.91% of the total population in the study area (10.0 km) of the region.

    • There are many people who commute to larger or developed cities in search of work (Head loading or

    construction workers) and labour migration is an issue requiring local job creation in the region.

    The health services for residents of Samakhiyali are

    within a distance of 1.68 km SE but insufficient for

    critical illness, because of which the Incumbents

    commute to Bachao, Bhuj and Gandhidham. For

    modern technology medical facilities the residents

    approach Ahmadabad.

    Ambulance 108 is available in the area. But the health facilities should be both Modern technology and

    affordable.

    The people of the study area are well acquainted with the development and the further prospects in the region.

    They Focused group has exclaimed that “the existing facilities of Gallant Metal Ltd. have not created or been

    harmful to any worker or public at large”. The local residents expect more jobs from the existing project.

    The Conditions of Toilets in the School , Shri Jeraparag was found to be up to the marks , neat and fully

    functional. The School has a temple outside the premises indicating harmonious cultural knowledge exchange in

    the region.

    There is scope of plantation in the play ground of Shri

    playing in open field with inadequate plantation.

    Summary

    • The socio-economic expectations of the villagers in the surrounding have minimalistic needs

    as the sources of employment and earning are not significant. The expansion activity will

    provide additional employment (round the year) to local people and contribute in the

    economic status of the area.

    • There are no bathrooms attached in the housing structures in the study area.

    • Higher Education facilities for Girls are limited. Girl Child education is low.

    • The villagers believe that, for economic growth and sustainable development it is important

    to protect the environment and harmonize the business activities with it. Villagers view a

    symbiosis between environment and business development.

    • Various questions on the adequacy for safety precautions by the plant activity operations

    were enquired. The incumbents replied that they were indifferent towards the plant

    activity. Majority of the incumbents accepted that the plant activity has never harmed them.

    As per the Need Based requirements of the local Government School of Habitation Gharana , the

    following list of installations were given dated 01/02/2018 :

    Shri Gharana is a Girls School with 250 students up to 8th Standard.
