Beginnings and Endings

The beginning and end of your writing is as important as the bit in the middle because it sets the tone and introduces your reader to what you are writing about.

The ending is equally important because it’s the final impression you leave with the reader and summarises or emphasises the main ideas in your response.

Activity

Write the beginning and ending for each of the

following tasks:

• a letter to a friend who has moved to another country.• a magazine article looking at the effects of binge drinking.• an email to a company asking them to donate products for a charity auction.

Compare your beginning and ending for each text with a partner. Which are the best sentences? Why?
