Text

Para. 1 Our growing demand for water threatens the world’s development and security. Solving this problem needs not only various technologies, but also science and a lot of political will. Para. 2 By this time next year, some 1.75 million people will have died before their time for the simple reason that they cannot get access to safe drinking water. This is the total number of people who suffer from various diseases that the World Health Organization attributes to unsafe drinking supplies. Para. 3 United Nations officials had expected that these avoidable deaths would become the focus of the world’s news agencies through the report of the 3rd World Water Forum in Japan.

This forum is regarded as the most important meeting on freshwater resources ever held. Para. 4 The world’s population continues to expand. If action isn’t taken, as many as 7 million people in 60 countries could face water shortage by 2050. So what needs to be done? In large part, the answer lies in the development and large-scale application of relatively simple technologies. Alternative solutions such as solar-powered desalination plants are very useful, particularly in wealthy west Asian countries. However, two biggest components of the global water shortage are the pollution of drinking supplies with human waste, and the huge waste of water in some agricultural practices. Both of these problems could be relieved by improving existing technologies.

Para. 5 The world’s environmental situation might be eased if we carefully deal with our waste. In the rich North, toilets using water are the largest single drain on domestic water supplies. Nevertheless, it is not a must for the developing countries that currently lack adequate capital to imitate this wasteful practice, which would require heavy investment in wastewater treatment. They need toilets which can safely turn human waste into a smellless, soil-like substance. Para. 6 Meanwhile, water used for agriculture accounts for more than two thirds of human’s normal use of water. However, almost 60 percent of the water is lost during the irrigation. We do not need to be so wasteful today. By using “micro-irrigation”, in which water is piped and fed onto crops through sealed systems, irrigation can be made 90 percent efficient.

Much greater use could also be made of recycled sewage, rather than from supplies that could be used for human consumption. Para. 7 Getting young scientists and engineers interested in the world’s water problems is vital. One difficulty, in that regard, is that toilets and micro-irrigation are not seen as attractive topics, though scientific excellence and the application of proper technologies can go hand in hand. Para. 8 Nevertheless, it is at the political level that determines whether the battle to fight against the global water problems will ultimately be won or lost. Most importantly, this will require developed nations to use the political power and capital to help the world’s poorest countries solve water-borne diseases, and achieve the goal of reducing the number of people lacking safe drinking water by half by 2015.
