Hello readers! I’m Mariana Ludmer, the Section’s Chairman, reporting on October’s Section meeting. WHAT A GREAT SUCCESS !!!! I’ve been volunteering with the Section since 2007, and I believe our last meeting broke record attendance!

Approximately 120 people attended our October meeting - a mix of educators, students, industry partners, CWIs, and representatives from schools looking into starting welding programs. The Star of the Show: Efram Abrams - AWS Educational Sales Representative. Efram works at AWS Headquarters in Miami. As Section Chairman, I work closely with many AWS Staff located in Miami, and Efram has been such a great resource for our Section. I met him last year at the Las Vegas FABTECH show, at one of the AWS Receptions, and we discussed so many great ideas to help shape the image of welding, raise the bar in welding education and ways to attract young people into the field. Efram has been with AWS for over 6 years, first working in the Standards

Development department as a secretary to many of the volunteer technical committees tasked with the development and revision of the AWS Welding Specifications, Codes and Recommended Practices. He is responsible for the promotion of the Educational resources that AWS offers. Efram works hard to promote welding education and to continuously improve and add to AWS’s educational resources to accomplish the mission we all share as members of the Society: To advance the science, technology, and application of welding and allied joining and cutting processes worldwide.

Efram discussed the many educational resources that AWS has to offer to educational institutions and industry partners. Efram emphasized the importance of setting a National Standard for skill levels in welding programs to ensure that the industries in need of welders are getting a well trained workforce. As such, he discussed the S.E.N.S.E. program for schools. S.E.N.S.E sets a minimum skill level for entry level and advanced level welders, and gives schools he flexibility to build a class curriculum to suits its need and meet the minimum skill level set by S.E.N.S.E. Helping improve class curriculums and helping instructors develop curriculums, AWS has developed an Online Educational Library which contains over 200 modules, over 100 hours of content for all skill levels, covering topics from welding fundamentals, safety, metallurgy and symbols, to professional development courses (which educators can certainly benefit from) such as Destructive Testing, NDT, WPS/PQR preparation, and much more. Another important topic discussed during ’s presentation was the Accredited Testing Facility (ATF) program, an AWS Welder Certification resource that sets the standard. Through ATFs, welders can get a welding certification that is recognized worldwide. ATFs are registered with AWS and and must meet all the requirements of the AWS ATF Program, allowing access to welder certification verification worldwide; providing consistency and uniformity to welder qualification needs. S.E.N.S.E. and ATF programs coupled together grant industry partners certainty that the welder actually had reached the skill level necessary to successfully pass a more standardize system of testing.

And the best part is, if you are an educational institution in need of financial help, the AWS Foundation has a new program called AWS Workforce Development Grant. The AWS Foundation has been in charge of fundraising for education at the National level and administering scholarships for many many years, with the goal of increasing the amount of students that enroll and finish welding programs. If you look at the November 2017 edition of the Welding Journal, you will find pages with names of scholarship and fellowship recipients. Impressive! Most recently, the AWS Foundation created a Grants program to help educational institutions improve their welding programs to accommodate a higher number of students and also to help them bring new technology into their programs. The AWS Workforce Development Grant will give a total of $250,000 in 2018 spread amongst 11 schools nationwide. A school can apply for a maximum grant of $25,000, and it has to let AWS Foundation know, through the application, how that money will be spent and how it will benefit the educational program. The AWS Educational resources that I mentioned earlier are very fairly priced, in my opinion. But should you need financial help to bring some of those resources to your school, apply for the grant next year. THANK YOU EFRAM!!!!!!!! I also want to give a shout out to Santa Ana College for hosting this meeting. George Moreno, the lead instructor, graciously accepted to host the meeting on short notice. The Santa Ana College has an AWS Student Chapter, which plays a key role in developing leadership skills amongst student welders to become our future leaders! Depicted here(left to right) are Jeff Davis, San Diego Section, Efram Abrams from AWS Education, Santa Ana Student Chapter Officers and Los Angeles Section Officers. Thank you all of you volunteers for all your efforts and dedication to our section and the Society.

Also want to give a shout out to Lincoln Electric for their continuous support and partnership with our Section. Lincoln has been graciously donating welding gear and equipment to our Section over many years, has brought their awesome trailer to our events and also contributes tremendously at the National level. Lincoln Electric also donates money to the AWS Foundation to fund Scholarship programs all over the U.S. There are many Lincoln personnel who are Section Officers in the U.S., and AWS Officers, including

Past AWS Presidents. These are all volunteers who put in time, effort and money to support the Society’s mission . Please give a huge round of applause to our biggest supporter: Lincoln Electric!!!!! On behalf of our Section members, and all the students and people who have received so many of your goodies donated over the years, I most sincerely thank you for the continued support. I also want to thank our industry partners, ASNT, AWS PWC (Professional Welder Competition) Committee and Indiana Section, AWS Education, AWS Bookstore, Advanced Weldtec Inc, Fronius, Arigas, ESAB, Miller, Action Gas and Welding Supply, Bradford Derustit,, Maxine Waters Employment Center, Pearl Abrasives, Markal, KH Metals and Supply and Praxair for their continued support. Monetary contributions from our industry partners are the key to our success as a Section, influencing AWS National decisions impacting the industry, enabling youth to become the leaders and welders of tomorrow through Scholarships and Leadership development programs. Our Section has four Scholarships (around $15,000 to be given away each year!). With contribution from these

companies, we invest in AWS members to further their knowledge and skills through the many programs that AWS offers for its volunteers (such as the AWS Instructor’s Institute, AWS Leadership Symposium, AWS Seminars, etc.). With their contributions, we’re helping to address the workforce shortage, improve education and certification programs, and much more - for the benefit of all industries. We look forward to your continued support!!!!!
