In Joyce Rupp’s book, My Sorrow is Your Sorrow , she takes us on a spiritual journey rather than a historicalaccount of Mary and Jesus. She takes us back to the time of the rst century. Tat century was marked bythe interruption of ordinary time as Mary says her at to the messenger, the Angel Gabriel. I believe the

angels and all of heaven rejoiced.

To me, this is another pulsation of Love by the Divine, who created all things. For God so loved the worldthat he gave his only Son. Tis Love is the divine swirl, the energy that moves all of existence; it is thepull in the cosmos, the light that illuminates the whole of creation. He is the source of all, the reason andthe purpose that draws all of us intounity and love.

We reect, with Joyce, on Mary’ssuff ering. We are at the fth sorrow; we are at the cross. Mary stoodbeneath the cross as her Son, Jesus,

was dying. She was there for threelong hours. She was a mystic of thehighest order. She had an intimaterelationship with God. She was, asthe Angel Gabriel told her, highlyfavored. She didn’t have to wait tillthe Church officially declared herto be the Mother of God. She livedthe event, the mystery. Her faith andtrust in God was real.

I feel Mary is saying to us, “It is not my intention that you aredrawn into my pain but that you experience the love of Godat hand” It is not so important to have an historical account of Jesus as it is to have Him present to you, in the I Am in yourlife, in our today.

Tere were courageous people with her as she stood there:her sister Mary, wife of Clopas, Mary Magdalene, and John,

beloved the disciple. Tey stood as believers and followers ofChrist. Much was taking place here - not only what is seen andheard - but what is neither seen nor heard.

As Jesus was saying, “Father forgive them for they know not what they do”, Mary glances upward. She sees the sign at thetop of the cross “Jesus Christ King of the Jews.” She knew hiskingdom is not of this world.

She thinks to herself, we had just celebrated the Passover; which delivered our people out of Egypt and now your death will deliver us from the eff ects of sin. She recalls his words,

“Take this cup and drink from it, this is the cup of the new andever lasting covenant. It shall be shed so that sins maybe forgiven. Do this in memory of me”

Jesus’ redemptive mission is completed in love and compassion for us and others. It’s eff ect will ow into the futureof humanity and even of the earth itself, Te heavenly realm is open to receive Jesus into his kingdom, time as weknow it doesn’t exist. Eternity has neither beginning nor end. He is the Alpha and the Omega.

You are called to bear the cross, so that you gain strength to help others, so that you maybe instruments of hope incrises, so that you can be a light in the darkness. Jesus is the light of the world that shines upon you. Te power ofyour love and forgiveness can lead many to unity of spirit, towards the wholeness of love in God. Prayerful presenceis awareness, that we are never alone, Jesus is with us. I pray that the hope of love may take its root in all of us. Tattogether we may cooperate in our beliefs, and allow compassion and love to have its way. We can honor God and the

universe, which he created; we can recognize the sacredness of the earth, making it not only sustainable. but fruitful.Mary stood strong beneath the cross for all of us in our crises, in our fear, in our dark times. It is our job to standstrong together and usher in peace for all nations.

It is my honor to have been recently appointed as NationalPrioress for the Servite Secular Order. I previously servedon the OSSM National Council from March 2013 toOctober 2015 as the Councilor for Region IV, supportingthe communities in Colorado and New Mexico. Duringmy term, I enjoyed meeting and visiting with SecularServites in other communities as well.

I was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Areaamong a large extended Italian-American family. Myhusband Dennis and I have been married for 37 years. We live in Union City, California with our beagle Rosie. We have two daughters, one of whom is married, a two-year-old grandson and another grandchild on the way. Iretired in January 2014 after 39 years of employment atKaiser-Permanente, rst as a Medical Assistant and thenas a Department Coordinator. In my pastime, I enjoysewing, quilting, reading and spending as much time as Ican with my grandson.

As a cradle Catholic, I have a deep love for the richnessof our faith and have always had a strong devotion to ourBlessed Mother. I received a certicate of completionfrom the Diocese of Oakland’s School of Pastoral Ministryand am also a certied catechist for the state of California. I currently serve as the Adult Faith Formation/RCIACoordinator at my parish as well as a Lector and Eucharistic Minister. I consider my Secular Servite vocation as a gift that came at a time in my life when I was seeking a deeper way ofliving out of my faith. I made my Promise in May 2010 and am a member of the Mother of Sorrows Communityat my parish of St. Anne’s in Union City. One of the things I love about being a Servite is our strong sense ofcommunity. Whenever I meet other Servites, even for the rst time, I feel like I am among family.

I look forward to continuing to serve on the National Council, supporting all the communities in the US provinceand meeting more members of the Servite family.

I have no family to speak of, but I am privileged to live with a curmudgeonly, red-headed watch- cat GenghisTom. He is a psalm in a fur suit.

Te dening characteristic of my life besides my faith, and in no way separate from it, is my Catholic education.I was blessed to be coddled in Catholicism in elementaryand high school, at Dominican College and the CatholicUniversity. Tat persuit of Truth, Beauty, and Goodness was a richly positive and joyful privilege. I was evenhappier sharing these with Catholic school students foralmost fty years, the last 33 of which were at ServiteHigh School. Although I was never formally “the religionteacher,” my deep roots in Catholic philosophy and

theology informed any subject I taught. When I was asked why they sometimes learned more religion in my classesthan in religion, my standard answer was, “Because hereyou are not suspicious.”

After so many years of prayer, work, and friendship with the friars, it was natural to join the Secular Order uponmy retirement. I have had about every possible “job” in my community and loved them all, but perhaps the deepest joys came from simple things- providing taxi service, baking cakes, visiting our sick, encouraging the sorrowful ordiscouraged. With the abiding inuence of Mary, I pray to be useful in this position.

Te lives of our four families have been busy withcelebrations, children’s activities, meetings, and all that

is a part of family life with young children. We haveshared some joys and also sorrows in our families thesepast few months.

We joyfully gathered to celebrate the Admission of anew Diakonia family. Matt and Samantha Golat, withtheir ve young children, were admitted during thecelebration of the Mass of the Immaculate Conceptionon December 8, 2015, at the 5:00 p.m Liturgy. Afterthe Mass our four families enjoyed a delicious pot-

luck dinner at the home of the Diakonia of Via Matris(Curt and Jacene Silvis Family). Can you imaginethe excitement and fun in that home with 15 youngchildren beside the adults! Matt and Samantha havebegun their period of formation (study and prayer) which will extend for at least one year. We are blessed tohave them join us, and will accompany them on their journey as they learn more about the Servite Order andour spirituality.

In early January Samantha Golat’s father, Ben Miniatt, was called home after several months of battling cancer.

We shared the sorrow of the Golat family and stoodby them as they said their goodbyes on the day of thefuneral.

On February 5th, Loree Nauertz’s 6 year old nephew,Isaiah Reither, was called home. He was a very joyfullittle boy who had multiple health problems since birth. He had especially endeared himself to the nurses anddoctors at the Children’s Hospital where he spent a lotof time. Heaven is rejoicing while those who love himfeel the loss of his joy-lled presence.

Our Diakonia families continue to live up to their title,Diakonia, which means “service.” Each of these fourfamilies is actively involved in the ministry of service.

Just to mention a few: Loree Nauertz, the mother of 6active boys, coordinates the ministry of providing mealsfor families in times of sorrow, health problems andother times for those needing support. She is an educatorin our parish Adult and Youth Religious educationprogram. She is presently organizing a diocesanconference which will be held in Spooner on September28th featuring Chris Stefanick, an internationallyacclaimed author and speaker focusing his attention onour Catholic Youth. Among other service projects Loreeis also involved with is the Natural Family Planningprogram in our diocese. Alan, her husband, is alwaysvery supportive.

Our new Diakonia, the Golat family is very involvedin Pro-life. Every third Tuesday of the month, rain orshine, snow or cold, for the past three years Samanthahas led a Rosary for Life outdoors before our Memorialto the Unborn in front of St. Francis de Sales Church.

You may be familiar with the saying “It takes acommunity….” In this case it takes a Servite communityto propagate the devotion to St. Peregrine. In March2015, Fr. John Fontana, OSM, introduced St. Peregrineto our parish when he off ered a three day dynamicLenten mission titled “Te Role of Suff ering in the

Lives of Jesus’ Followers.” Te powerful parish missionconcluded with a St. Peregrine Healing Mass. A fewmonths later Fr. Vidal Martinez, OSM, visited our parishand off ered another opportunity for our community tolearn more about and experience the intercession of St.Peregrine as he off ered a Healing Mass as well. Bothevents were very well attended. Leading up to thesetwo events Sr. Dominica Eff ertz,OSM, the spiritualdirector of our Secular Servite community, helped usunderstand and appreciate the spirit of St. Peregrine so we can more eff ectively reach out and comfort thosearound us. With the assistance of the National Shrine of

St. Peregrine located in Chicago, we were able to obtaina rst class relic and poster of St. Peregrine. Our SecularServite community in Spooner purchased a reliquaryfor the relic and assisted in selecting and preparing aspecial place in our church where one could venerateour special Servite saint. During a Sunday Mass in

October our pastor, Fr. Ed Anderson gave a wonderfulexplanation to the congregation about St. Peregrinebefore processing with the relic to its new area duringa formal dedication and blessing of this new area ofprayer in our church. Although, suff ering continues inour community we as Secular Servites gently embracethe many opportunities we have to comfort others as weexpress our Servite compassion by sharing our Serviteheritage and the story of hope we learned from St.Peregrine.

Members of Mary, Queen of theServants Community have adoptedTe Palms Rehabilitation Centerin Palm Bay, Florida. On the rst Wednesday of the month, Deacon Jack Rhine, OSSM, presides at aCommunion Service there. MaryCatherine Pearce, OSSM, MarySheets, OSSM, and Karen Rhine,OSSM, are readers and distribute

the Eucharist. At each service, thereis also a blessing with the relic of St.Peregrine, which the approximately30 residents greatly appreciate.

On the fourth Saturday of themonth, Mary, Queen of the ServantsCommunity hosts a social event atTe Palms. Tey serve refreshmentsand lead a sing along as a formermusic minister plays the piano. Itis gratifying to see residents whoare generally non-verbal joining in the singing. At the December social, Santa Claus, (Don Carothers, OSSM)distributed gifts to each of the residents assembled. Te Servite carolers were also asked to sing a few songs for thepatients in the dementia unit and were greeted with enthusiasm there also.

On December 30, the Servites celebrated Christmas Day again at Te Palms which included anointing of the sickand blessing with the relic of St. Peregrine. Fr. Aland Jean presided, assisted by Deacon Jack OSSM, who preached.Residents were anointed and their confessions heard by Msgr Cleo Schmenk, a retired priest living in the area.

Nursing home ministry is challenging. It is saddening to see the physical and mental condition of many of theresidents and above all knowing that many are lonely with no family or friends. But the Servite visitors are pleased tosee their awakening, experience their spirituality and their appreciation for the little things. Answering Christ’s call

to care for the sick and comfort the lonely encourages the Servites to be there for these brothers and sisters.
