Assessment overview

IntroductionThis assessment is divided into seven parts and requires you to create a tri-fold brochure and a 20–30 page travel guide based on a given scenario.

The design scenarioThe hypothetic scenario puts you in a position to design publica-tions for the city or area you are living in to inform and attract po-tential visitors to experience local scenery, attractions and shops. In addition to these two publications, you will also share the cre-ative and technical processes you experienced specified by prog-ress challenges throughout the learning modules.

File namingOnce you feel confident that you have covered the learning ma-terials for this unit, you are ready to attempt this assessment. To help Open Colleges manage your assessment, please use the fol-lowing file-naming convention: [student number]_[assessment]_[assessment number].doc for example 12345678_21850a_01.doc.

Assessment submissionWhen you are ready to submit your assessment, upload the file in OpenSpace using the Assessment Upload links in the rele-vant study period of your course. The Student Lounge provides a ‘Quick Guide to Uploading Assessments’ if you need further as-sistance. Uploading assessments in OpenSpace will enable Open

Colleges to provide you with the fastest feedback and grading on your assessment. It is important that you keep a copy of all assessment materials submitted to Open Colleges.

TipsWe strongly recommend you complete all activities and engage in the student forums throughout the module. Elements and critical aspectsAssessment for this unit of competency is comprised of:• CUVGRD505A Design and manipulate complex layouts You will be assessed on your understanding of the following:• analyze design needs• develop and refine layout ideas• create and manipulate layouts• evaluate design work• finalize technical aspects. You must demonstrate the ability to:• create original designs for the layout of at least two publica-

tions• use an extended range of tools and features of relevant soft-

ware with a high level of technical proficiency • Integrate technical and creative processes to produce out-

comes that meet design objectives.

Progress challenge 1: Formalising the design briefThis challenge requires you to create a formal design brief based on the initial project details for the hypothetical scenar-io. The design brief should include the following:

• The communication objectives of the project describing the target audience and the purpose and message of the bro-chure and travel guide.

• The technical requirements of the project that include the delivery specifications and possible timelines for both the brochure and travel guide.

• Creative objectives of the project that includes style guide-lines.

Creative Brief Template1 Project Name: Advertising campaign for local areaVersion: 1

Date: 5/11/2016Overview

I was asked to design some advertising material for the local area of UlladullaObjectivesThere are two publications for this project:1.A tri-fold English language brochure 2.A 12-14 page English language Visitor Guide or Travel Planner

Schedule and BudgetI expected the project would take two months and I scheduled it accordingly - though it wasn’t a formal schedule. The brochures took approximately that amount of time - starting of the 11th of May in 2016 and finshing on the 30th of July.I was able to get a price estimate from Vistaprint - the prices for tri-fold brochures ranged from $39.99 for 25 to $3,299.99 for 20, 000 items, with paper stock of 150 g/m2 Glossy. Postage costs range from $7.99 for standard delivery, to $19.99 for Express Post; and delivery can take from 3-5 days to 3 weeks within Australia2. For the travel guide, I was able to get an estimate for printing, pa-per costs from the Officeworks site3 - with as little as $0.43 per side (for colour prints), $0.15 per sheet (for 200 gsm white uncoated), and $0.20 per sheet (for 140 gsm white gloss). The total estimate

would therefore be $19,780 (or $9.89 per copy).

Target AudiencesProvide the following types of audience information:Audience types – tourism industry (primary), families and other travellers (end users) - Tourists from across Australia• Buyer types – travellers/tourists; wholesale and retail travel

agents; owners of resorts, caravan parks, motels, and other tourist facilities.

• Key motivations – What makes them act? The main motive is to take a holiday and see what the place has to offer, an-other motive is to ‘get away’ from it all (i.e. ‘de-stress’). What emotion can we connect with? Holidays for me indicate joy and hope (something to look forward to), a chance to unwind and to experience something different. They also fill me with a sense of nostalgia (for instance, the family camping trips we used to do when we were younger).

• Key issues – What are their problems that we can solve? For people in the tourism industry, this means promoting their products and services. For tourists, it means obtaining information on places to go and things to do and see.

• Characteristics – Where do they access information? What types of media do they consume? Prior to the internet, people used to call into travel agents and/or tourist information centres to obtain a brochure; other people would see an advertisement on TV or hear on the radio. However, with the internet, most people can access information 24/7 and can download a brochure. More recently, they can access information on their mobile phone via an app.

• Demographics – gender, age, etc. Most of the potential visitors would be young families (i.e. Mum, Dad, the children,

maybe a dog), someone going their to visit family or a couple without children (whether they haven’t had them yet or, if they have, may they’ve left the family home

• Tip: Provide persona profiles if you have them developed. Personas can flesh out valuable target audience information in a personal way and can create a common language for your project team.

Key MessagesPresent information that can be used in developing the creative.• Value proposition – show the area in the best light• Benefits and features – things to do and see; places to stay;

value for money (regarding the goods an services on offer).• Facts and proof points – research by credible 3rd party,

major milestones: show what is important about the area, with references to other websites, or to history books; major landmarks

• Testimonials, case study examples i.e. past comments by travellers, particularly those who have enjoyed the place: these include copies of postcards, emails, guestbook signings or letters.

• An example would be a blog entry or comment about one (when it comes writing about the place of interest), or answers to an online survey which would ask visitors to rate the place they saw.

Call to Action• What action do you want the audience to take? A brochure

that primarily attracts and encourages the audience to be interested in and to visit their website or grab a more extensive visitor guide to get more information.

Page 5: Sedgwick e0498336-d0105-31187a-01

• Where do they go or click? What is the experience? I would hope visitors would download from the website to provide them with more information, or obtain a copy from their travel agent.

Creative ConsiderationsIdentify any requirements and brand considerations that impact format, copy, and visual elements, including:

• Format – web, print, video, sound: this could be all of them – a brochure (as I have been asked to do) and a PDF copy of the guide book (A similar example is the Visit NSW Guide Book4).

• Layout – considerations in accordance to your brand guidelines

• Tone – personality or voice that resonates with the audience or as required in accordance to brand guidelines

• Visual – colour palette, typography, graphics, photography, logos, icons

• Localization – any language or regional considerations or requirements: Australian English

Testing ConsiderationsProvide any A/B split testing or other testing requirements.Tip: Testing considerations should focus on 1 or 2 elements only. Multi-variate testing can be difficult for a creative team or agency to consider. In addition, testing can dramatically multiply the number of deliverables required to be produced.Either one way to do this is via a survey – on paper or online, to measure what people think of the place and where they

4Visit NSW (2016): Your Guide to Regional NSW, in http://www.sydney.com/sites/default/files/your-guide-to-regional-NSW.pdf; accessed Wednesday, 11 May 2016 at Wednesday, 11 May 2016 at 2:00:54 AM

obtained the information. Locally (offline), one can have a guest book where people can say what they think (many visitor centres have these where people write their names, where they are from and what they think).

ResourcesLink to additional resources and reference materials that can be researched during creative development, including:

• Brand guidelines i.e. the travel agency or tourist information centre advertising the products and services

• Existing source materials and content, including business plans, technical documentation, research, websites, and previous campaign collateral.

• Competitive analysis and examples – who are the competitors e.g. nearby places and services which may also compete for the tourist dollar.

• Benchmarks or best of breed comparable examples – best travel agency or tourist organization.

• Legal considerations – copyright considerations, moral rights (would we be allowed to use the images of people on holiday), are there nearby indigenous communities to consider?

The project needs you to develop and use your own logos, diagrams, images and assets in developing your design and layout solution.

Progress challenge 2: Design and layout exploration

This progress challenge requires you to provide visual and written evidence of the design exploration processes and ideation (idea generation) processes you experienced in creating concepts for your brochure and travel guide. You are required to provide:

• A 2-page A4 landscape mood-board showing at least five reference images and inspirations you used in coming up with a concept for your brochure and travel guide.

• A checklist listing the elements (photographs, artwork, and illustrations) needed in your travel guide and brochure.

• At least three sketches or mock-ups of design ideas you did not choose to implement for either your brochure, travel guide or both, to show you explored different possibilities.

• A photograph, scan or image of a mock-up of the design concept you chose to expand and implement for your brochure.

• A photograph, scan or image of a mock-up of the design concept you chose to expand and implement for your travel guide.

Ulladulla (NSW South Coast1) is the place I am promoting in this brochure. It is a place dear to my heart – it was one of many destinations for our family camping (and road) trips, a place where my parents had retired, and my sister (and her own family) had lived for several years.

Activity Progress challenge 3: Creation and ImplementationThis progress challenge will allow you to show-case the processes you used and observed in implementing your design concepts into work-ing publication files. You are required to pro-vide the following:

• A written report describing at least five ex-amples of work safety and copyright prac-tices that you observed during the imple-mentation of your project.

• Two clear one-page snapshots of your doc-ument grid without any text or visual ele-ments, one for your brochure and the other for your travel guide. This will indicate you considered your layout and hierarchy early.

• A brief written report explaining the main tools and features of your publication soft-ware (Adobe InDesign) that you used to

implement your brochure concept into a digital publication document.

• A brief written report explaining the main tools and features of your publication soft-ware (Adobe InDesign) that you used to implement your travel guide concept into a digital publication document.

Part 1

Work safety practices I have observed/prac-tised include:

• taking regular breaks;

• correct posture at my work station1

• keeping hydrated and energized.

• Readability of text

Good copyright practices include:

• correct referencing of other people’s work (particularly when quoting form them or us-ing their pictures);

• Not copying other people’s work without giving them due credit2.

Hi Colleen

Your design looks cool, simple and very effective.

Your choice of fonts is also great and the colours

are good - great work

Hi Zamir,

Thanks for that feedback - I am hoping the lay-

out, colours and graphics look good because it

is a coastal town and I like to think that is the

image I am trying to portray.

I look forward to seeing yours as well.

The layout is set out good, it’s colourful and the

images and text communicates clearly what the

town is all about.

The town looks interesting and the brochure

looks great!

Re: ACTIVITY progress challenge 4

By COLLEEN SEDGWICK - Monday, 6 June

Thanks, Lakeia. I don’t exactly come from the

South Coast originally and have lived in Syd-

ney for most of my life (except for a little while

when I lived in Coffs Harbour) - so it wasn’t until

my parents (and then my sister and her family)

moved there it had become so important to me,

and conjures up many memories.

As well, I have made several family/road/camp-

ing trips down there before, so it was also im-

portant to me for that reason - but doubly im-

portant when your family moves down there

and it becomes a home away from home on top

of that

However, most importantly, it has a lot to offer

for families, which I find, is important to share

with everyone something I know first-hand.

Page 20: Sedgwick e0498336-d0105-31187a-01

Cheers,

Colleen

Getting positive feedback on my brochure

meant I could use the same layout, text and

colours for my travel guide.

On the Facebook forum2, there were a few

suggestions from someone as to what they

liked (i.e. the layout and the Children’s activ-

ities section) and what I could change about

my documents, particularly my Travel Guide

(this included my typefaces and background

image).

Merische Harkins

Hi there Colleen, well done on your travel guide

and brochure. I had a look at the pages and your

layout is nicely presented. Your maps and loca-

tions page it well presented and easy to follow.

I’ve got a couple of suggestions

I would have a play around with some more

fonts for your sub text. I feel like serif clashes

with your script font a little too much.

On your content page I would remove the photo

of you only because it doesn’t really suit or make

sense to have it there..... Your background image

is causing your page to look to busy and I feel

that it’s making the information difficult to read.

I do like how you have placed your information

in a frame by including the subtle drop shadow it

give the some texture and depth. I think to con-

tinue on this you could perhaps reduce opacity /

or remove the background image.

You could maybe try water colour background or

just a solid light blue... Your headings are not big

enough either they are a bit too small and the

stroke makes them really hard to read.

I like how you have included a mini kids activity

book within the travel guide. this give your guide

a point of difference.

Well done and I can’t wait to see your travel

guide in the next phase.

Colleen Sedgwick

Hi Merische Harkins,

I am pleased you like the layout of the docu-

ments as well as the children’s activities. Though

I am a bit confused - are you suggesting I use a

sans-serif font instead for my body text? I also

chose the heading and subheading font because

felt it gave the document a 1970’s beach-like

vibe, as well as the background image of the

wave (which I have been using since study peri-

od 2). Other suggestions like removing my pho-

to - fair enough, I will take that on board if you

wish :)

Like • Reply • 7 mins • Edited

Due to those suggestions, I had made the fol-

lowing changes:

1. My guide: Replacing my portrait with the

surfing shark character;

2. Both documents: replacing the serif font

(Myriad Pro) with a Sans-serif one (Corbel);

enlarging the headings so they are legible.

Page 2: Introduction – Welcome to Ulladulla

Greetings all,

My name is Colleen Sedgwick and even though I am not local to the Mil-ton-Ulladulla area, I love this place very much because I have travelled here several times, so when I was asked to make a publication (Travel Guide) for the city of Shoalhaven and for Tourism NSW, I was much obliged to sing my praises for it.

I hope that anyone reading this and then visiting the area will enjoy it as much as I have.

Cheers,

Colleen Sedgwick
