Spring/Summer 2016

Page 2: Sedona Arts Center: Spring/Summer 2016

In 1958, in the small town that was then Sedona, some very visionary people decided that our community needed a creative hub. They were artists, sculptors, civic leaders, educators, business owners and—whether they knew it or not—our town’s pioneers in cultural development.

A few years later, they turned an apple packing warehouse into the Art Barn, and set the pace for community arts programming in Northern Arizona. Decade by decade, Sedona Arts Center blossomed beneath the ubiquitous red rocks and quiet canyon trails. Thousands of artists, educators, friends and neighbors began investing in the idea of a more creative community. And then they built one.

With the fruits of their labor, Sedona learned how to express itself, how WRUHÁHFWLWVVHQVHRISODFHDQGKRZWRVXSSRUWWKHFUHDWLYHSURFHVV,GHDVZHUHVKDUHGDQGÀOPPXVLFWKHDWUHDQGUHYHOU\IRXQGDregular home at the Art Barn. New facilities and organizations followed, taking Sedona from the prosaic to the poetic. Cultural elements from QHDUDQGIDUEHJDQWRGHÀQH6HGRQDDVDQH[WUDRUGLQDU\SRLQWRQWKHmap. Artists, pilgrims, thinkers, and energy seekers took refuge in this growing creative community.

Then and now, the active ingredient has always been you—the people of the Verde Valley who support the arts, explore the creative process, and make our unique culture come alive around us. Sedona Arts Center proceeds from your legacy of fearless programming, diverse arts education activities, community investment, and wildly creative gatherings.

Because of you, the Art Barn is now a robust campus. The classrooms, gallery, theater, event spaces, and ceramics studio are activated year-round, and serve thousands of people in search of artistic development and genuine community.

Be Bold. Stay Centered. Get Creative.A Welcome from Eric Holowacz, Executive Director

Our once quiet town, still hidden among the towering red rocks and riparian watersheds, has grown up around us. And that shared cultural development ethic, born almost 60 years ago, remains intact to this day.

With a nod to our founders, and an eye to the future, Sedona Arts Center’s board and staff have a few favors to ask:

First, help us continue building this unique creative community. Bring your ideas and projects for the coming year. Propose an event or new collaboration. Consider our organization as your creative platform, a resource, a laboratory, a place to kindle your creative spark. Because we are.

Next, help us expand partnerships and programming in unimagined ways. Tell us what you’d like to see, or do, or experience. Give us feedback on workshops, exhibitions, and cultural activities. Connect our organization—and our shared community—with other forces and new cultural elements from around the world.

Art on Demand Opportunities for instant creative private and group lessonsHere at the Art Barn, we always get asked on the spur of the moment “What workshops DQGFODVVHVFDQ,WDNHWKLVZHHN"µ)RUWKRVHZKRKDYHQ·WSODQQHGDKHDG³UHVLGHQWVvisitors, and drop-in explorers—the Arts Center now has an answer: Let us arrange a special Art on Demand session, instructor, venue, and materials included. We’ve partnered with over a dozen wonderful local teaching artists to offer classes on demand any time, any place for individuals or small groups. See page 7 for details.

Start with a Pink Jeep tour, creekside lunch at L’Auberge, some indie cinema at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre, and that otherworldly hike up Bell Rock or Soldier’s Pass. Then let Sedona Arts Center provide a one-of-a-kind creative afternoon or evening with some of our community’s best artists. We think these short-order opportunities are perfect for families, bridal parties, corporate teams, tour groups, or anybody wanting to experience the creative side of Sedona. And you will too.

Verde Valley Artist Residency Pilot Projects A New Experiment in Creative Community-buildingShhhhh. Please keep this quiet for now, but the Arts Center has a dream to explore the guest-host relationship with artists, creative producers, and cultural managers. We see a town that hosts a steady stream of visiting artists, supports collaborative projects with local partners, and fosters new ideas shared from around the world. We envision FUHDWLYHSHRSOHÀQGLQJDWHPSRUDU\KRPHKHUHWKHLULGHDVVKDUHGZLWKXVDQGRXUtown becoming a true platform for 21st century cultural development.

It is still early-stage, but remarkable partnerships are being forged with Verde Valley School, private property owners, faraway arts organizations, and American creative leaders who are ager to join us in this experiment. Keep it quiet, but this summer, we will begin the trial stage and host visiting artists and producers. Sedona Arts Center, and our bold and fearless partners, will connect our guests with landscapes, heritage, local Native America sites and culture, organizations, schools, and an otherworldly night sky.

Join Us in Making the Most Beautiful Creative Place on Earth

TKHUHDUHIRXUWKLQJVWKDWZLOOGHÀQH6HGRQD$UWV&HQWHUin the 21st century: Community Outreach, Creative Placemaking, Artistic Development, and Cultural Celebration. The driving goal of our efforts—past, present, and future—is a more interesting, expressive, and creative Sedona. Here’s a look at our blueprint for the year ahead...

First, the Arts Center will strengthen our core programming with expanded classes and arts education, more robust gallery programming, and innovative projects like the Art of Recycling, 12 x 12, Loving Bowls, and a new Plein Air Legacy weekend in June. Then, we’ll add a stronger outreach and scholarship focus to bring the arts to more of our community. And for our generous members, our staff and artists will continue working hard to develop exciting and enchanting creative experiences.

Beyond that, with the help of generous patrons and sponsors, our board is researching potential improvements and expansion possibilities for our historic campus. We’d love to increase teaching space, better equip the theater studio, landscape the public space around the Art Barn, and enhance our entire physical plant with technology, security, and accessibility.

Our 21st century Arts Center will be fearless in exploring bold and innovative program partnerships. This year we will lay the groundwork for a Sedona Artists-in-Residence program, and begin stewarding new collaborations with cultural institutions and creative people from around the world. We’ve been a quiet, hidden gem for too long, and the world should know about Sedona’s creative community and the extraordinary environment we share. We will invite and host cultural forces from San Francisco to Chicago to Helsinki to Beijing—and then connect them with our own cultural identity and sense of place.

Finally, our future will depend on local partnerships, and strengthening capacity with friends here at home: Sedona International Film Festival, Red Earth Theatre, Sedona Arts Festival, Chamber Music Sedona, Sedona Library, and others. Behind the scenes, our organization is expanding arts education opportunities at Monument Valley High School, exploring arts education projects with Sedona Recycles, collaborating with L’Auberge de Sedona, Tlaquepaque Arts & Crafts Village, and hoping to grow our offerings during the First Friday Gallery Tours.

And we are now working more closely with the City of Sedona, Verde Valley School, visionary property owners, major donors, and civic organizations to ensure a vibrant and healthy cultural ecosystem.

Together, we celebrate this wonderful creative community, incubate ideas and projects, and guide Sedona into unimagined territory. Some amazing new arts, culture, and heritage opportunities await.

We thank you for joining us.

Introducing:

The Sedona Ukulele Posse!Late last year, we discovered the unstoppable musical force that is the Jerome Ukulele Orchestra.
