Prayer Concerns

April 23 will be

United Methodist

Women Sunday!

Our speaker will be

Jenny Sorey from PATH, Partners

Against Trafficking Humans. We are

inviting women (and men) from other

United Methodist Churches to attend

Goddard that Sunday. Won’t you invite

your friends, family, and neighbors?

Jenny is an enthusiastic, dedicated and

knowledgeable person who is working to

help solve this growing problem in our

state. We are asking that you bring

items to share with the victims of human

trafficking. Items needed are combs,

brushes, toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap,

and other hygiene products.

This is another way our Goddard Family

can show God’s love and help others!

Inside-Out. We can make a

difference!

The Community Rescue Mission

The Community Rescue Mission, located at 4th and F Street, phone 479-782-1443, partners with area churches to meet spiritual and physical needs by providing meals, a place to stay, and church services. Last year, 1,147 clients checked in for 16,273 nights of shelter and 43,354 meals were served. Until I became associated with the Mission, I was not aware of the extent of the need in our community. Please be in prayer for the homeless and those that work to help them.

News from our Goddard Food Pantry Ministry

We are thankful for Mike Lyons, Mike Mankin and Dick

Taylor for helping our Goddard Food Pantry Ministry by

picking up food and stocking our pantry each Tuesday. We need your help to

form a 2nd pickup and stocking team. We need someone who has a truck to

drive to the Food Bank on Tuesday morning and to CV’s Family Food Store on

Tuesday afternoon to pickup our food orders and bring the food back to our church.

We also need another person to help unload the food. If you are willing to help in

this ministry, please call the church office (785-1415). Thank you.

GriefShare is serving two regular attending participants during this session. The videos are so helpful in showing us each emotion or new experience is normal in the grieving process. Often, well intended people can say something so inappropriate or hurtful at a very tender place in our healing process. We have also learned how to handle trigger points or things that can set off tears of emotion. I encourage you to give GriefShare a t r y . O p e n t o e v e r y o n e . Health Ministry

April observes National Parkinson's Aware-

ness Month. According to the American Parkin-

son Disease Association, more than 1 million

people in the U.S. and more than 10 million

people worldwide are affected by Parkinson's.

The average age of onset is sixty, but may occur

in younger people. Parkinson's disease is a brain

disorder that progresses slowly, with symptoms

taking years to develop in most cases. In short, a

person's brain slowly stops producing dopamine,

a chemical which relays messages within the

brain to control movement of the body. With less

and less dopamine, a person has less and less

ability to regulate their movements, body and

emotions.

The motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease

appears when about 60-80% of the dopamine

producing cells are damaged. While symptoms

are unique to each person, knowing typical

stages helps one cope with changes as they

occur.

In the first stage, mild symptoms occur that do

not generally interfere with daily activities. Tremor

and other movement symptoms only appear on

one side of the body. Changes in posture, walk-

ing and facial expressions may be noticed.

In the second stage, the symptoms start getting

worse. Tremor, rigidity, and other movement

symptoms affect both sides of the body. Walking

problems and poor posture may become appar-

ent, but the person is still able to live alone.

The third stage is mid-stage in progression with

loss of balance and slowness in movements oc-

curring. The person is still fully independent, but

the symptoms impair activities of daily living.

In the fourth stage, symptoms become severe

and very limiting, making help with activities

necessary and becoming unable to live alone.

The fifth stage is the most advanced and debili-

tating stage. Stiffness in legs make it impossible

to stand or walk. The person requires a wheel

chair or is bedridden. Hallucinations and

delusions may occur.

Although there is no treatment that slows

progression, symptoms can be managed. Treat-

ment is highly individualized for each person.

Several classes of medications are available for

symptomatic therapy.

Deep brain stimulation is a surgical treatment

approved by the FDA. This involves implanting

an electrode into the brain on one or both sides

of the brain as needed. The electrode is con-

nected to a pacemaker-like device placed under

the skin in the chest.

Patients are encouraged to participate in an

exercise program including fitness training,

strengthening, flexibility, and gait and balance

training to help with mobility.
