Dean’s Column Dear Colleagues and Friends, You may have noticed that no program is scheduled for TCAGO for the month of March. Both the Program Com-mittee as well as the Board agree that it is not necessary to have a program every month. However some months have two events scheduled. The American Guild of Organists is promoting a special reduced rate for new membersnew membersnew membersnew members who join by March 31st.

TCAGO supports this move by extending the deadline and by reducing the rates for each level by 30% for all newnewnewnew members who join by May 31May 31May 31May 31stststst. This is a golden opportunity to get a friend/colleague to join now!! There has been some confusion regarding the new TCAGO Advertising Policy. To clarify this, let me quote from the minutes of the last Board meeting: if the event is AGO-sponsored, there is no charge. There is a fee for email because that is in lieu of paying postage. If an AGO member is performing, the ad is free in Pipenotes, but there is a charge for email. If you still have questions, please contact a Board member. As stated in the Chapter Management Handbook, the local chapter is the heart of AGO. That means youyouyouyou are the heart of TCAGO. Yes, youyouyouyou! YouYouYouYou keep the circulation of blood going through the arteries of the system. It is up to youyouyouyou to feed into it as well as to be fed by it. Support TCAGO by getting involved! Peace, joy, and inspiration be yours!

Symphonie de la Passion is a dramatic four movement work depicting scenes from the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ. Influenced by the 18th and 19th century tradition of organists improvising religious program music, Maleingreau's Symphonie will provide the musical narrative to a moving display of projected images. Suggested $5.00 offering for supper. !

Minnesota Public Radio will record the concert for later broadcast. For tickets and information, call 612-624-2345 or visit www.vocalessence.org. Contemporary musical settings of the Biblical Passion story are relative rarities, but composer Francis Grier has joined forces with the poet Elizabeth Cook to cre-ate a substantial and highly original work. Both Cook and Grier will be present in Minneapolis for the world premiere. The Passion of Jesus of Nazareth will be illuminated with projected images from the breathtaking new Saint Johns Bible, newly commissioned by Saint Johns Ab-bey.

Griers music is dramatic and rich, says Philip Brunelle. The story of the Passion has been set to music by many composers over the centuries, notably Bach. Now it comes to us in a contemporary setting with Cooks beautiful, poetic language that conveys the story as if it were being told today. The concert takes its title from a line of Eliza-beth Cooks poetry: Then he took the cup of wine and blessed it, saying It is the last wine I shall taste this side of heaven. Her libretto is based on the Gospel accounts of the Passion but also includes some incidents and individuals that do not appear in the Gospels. Composer Francis Grier describes the music in these terms: The musical style is clear and quite simple in its overall expressive-ness, but at times it breaks out into violent and dissonant complex forms. As in the Bach Passions, color is sought through exploiting the musical resources as inventively as possi-ble: at times a section is set for one voice and just two or three instruments, at others the full ensemble provides sudden contrasts. The first performance in the United Kingdom will be on Good Friday, April 14, 2006 in the Chapel of Kings College, Cam-bridge, given by the choristers of Kings Choir, the BBC Sing-ers and the chamber orchestra Endymion, conducted by Stephen Cleobury. The performance is part of the Easter at King’s festival and will be broadcast live on BBC Radio 3. !

Many thanks to colleagues and members who are helping to achieve this goal.

As organists and church musicians, we often spend too much time alone practicing, planning, and being overly absorbed in our own job situa-tions. We need each other as colleagues to bounce new ideas off of each other, be inspired by other's talents and be able to lean on each other for advice and support. I think it "takes a village" to make us the best we can be, and our AGO chap-ter should be that community of nurture and inspi-ration. Besides, what other group of people can you talk to about your passion for organ and church music and not be considered a "nerd?!" Tim Strand

THE ART OF THE ART OF THE ART OF THE ART OF THE BACH CANTATATHE BACH CANTATATHE BACH CANTATATHE BACH CANTATA By Thomas LancasterBy Thomas LancasterBy Thomas LancasterBy Thomas Lancaster On Sunday, March 12 at 4:00 pm, the singers and orches-tra of the Bach Soci-ety of Minnesota, conducted by Tho-mas Lancaster, will perform a concert of three of J. S. Bach's sacred cantatas on the Music at Four Series at House of Hope Presbyterian Church, 797 Sum-mit Avenue, Saint Paul. An early can-tata, Komm, du süße Todesstunde, BWV 161 (composed in Weimar), will open the program, followed by two cantatas from 1723, Bach's first year in Leipzig: Du sollt Gott, deinen Herren lieben, BWV 77, and Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben, BWV 147, the latter of which contains the original version of the well known chorus Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring. The Bach Society, reorganized in 2004, is an ensemble of sixteen professional singers, some of whom sing the solo movements as well as the choruses, just as Bach's singers did. String players perform on Baroque instruments. Tick-ets ($20, $17 senior, $12 student) are available from The Schubert Club: Phone 651-292-3268. !
