With your new gas and electricity smart meter and smart energy monitor, your gas and electricity usage becomes visible.

You’ll be able to get an indication of how much it costs to make your toast in the morning, as well as what it costs to keep the heating on all night. Understanding the energy you use helps you make choices to save money in the future.

Watch and understand what energy you are using

It’s easy to forget how the little things you do can cost money as you go about your daily life.

But now, thanks to your smart energy monitor, you’ll know whether boiling the kettle for a cup of tea is cheaper or more expensive than charging your mobile phone. Not to mention how much you pay to leave your TV on standby.

It’s a lot easier to change a habit when you can see the benefit almost immediately.

Your smart energy monitor makes it all very simpleWe’ve made it as easy as possible. At a glance traffic lights show you how much electricity you’re using.

If the display is red, then your home’s electricity usage is high and you’re probably using multiple appliances. If it’s green, it’s low and you’re consuming a smaller amount of electricity. It’s a great way of involving everyone in your home to help manage and control your gas and electricity usage.

Your smart energy monitor will also show you how much your energy costs you in pounds and pence. You can use the smart energy monitor to set yourself budgets for both gas and electricity and really stay in control of how much energy you use.

By understanding how you use energy, you’ll have more control. That’s why, after each bill you receive from us, we’ll send you a tailored Smart Energy Report. This report is a guide showing you how your energy use breaks down, where you might be wasting energy and it gives you personalised advice on how to make savings.

The Smart Energy Report is created using data from your smart meter. Since you have a choice over how often your smart meter sends us data, you have control over how accurate your Smart Energy Report is. You can choose whether you’d like your smart meter to give us data once every half hour, once a day or opt out of receiving it by

choosing monthly. If you choose to give us more detailed half hourly readings, we’ll be able to give you better advice. It’s a lot easier to change a habit when you can see the benefit almost immediately.

To change how often smart data is collected, call us on 0800 980 6121.

We promise to take care of your energy data, and keep it secure. If you choose to give us half hourly and daily readings you have the right at any time to withdraw consent by contacting us.

More control better bills

One more thing you need to know. Every so often we’ll need to carry out a visual safety inspection of your gas and electricity meter; this is for quality assurance and is required by law. We shall be in touch when your meter inspection is due.

Your smart meter automatically sends us your meter readings, so your bills will be accurate and you’ll only pay for the energy you’ve used. Occasionally the installation of smart meters can occur at roughly the same time that we were due to send you a bill.

If this happens, the first bill you receive after the install might still be an estimate based on your historical consumption. In other cases, we may still ask you to submit your meter readings to ensure that any delays incurred whilst setting up your smart meter do not affect your bill.

Not to worry though, going forward, you’ll receive accurate bills without submitting a meter reading as your smart meter will send us regular and accurate readings of your energy usage automatically.
