If you read this title closely, you might be confused (our staff tell me that’s a common reaction!). Here’s a summary of

seeJesus: We are an international discipling mission that equips the church with tools that draw the church into the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. Since our “tools” are books, videos, and Bible studies, we’ve organized the publishing side of our work into “seeJesus Press.” We’ve recently hired Deb Keiser (former Associate Publisher for Moody Publishers) to run seeJesus Press. We are a mission that publishes, not a publisher that does mission. Why? What is the difference?

Let me explain by talking about our Bethesda Series, our interactive Bible study for people affected by intellectual disabilities. No publisher would touch something like Bethesda. Why? There is no market. The disabled are (in general) marginalized, and the church presumes they can’t be discipled. What’s the point of publishing something no one wants? That’s what a mission does. We want to give something to the church they don’t yet realize they need. All missions are like that.

A publisher, understandably, must make decisions based largely on market logic: “What will sell? What is new?” Because of your partnership with us, we can ask:“How can we help transform the church so it looks like Jesus?” This is where our hybrid model (missions + publisher) works beautifully. As a mission we raise the funds and recruit staff to pour endless hours (in the case of Bethesda, that was Jill Miller and Julie Courtney) into creating a first-class curriculum that fits the world of disabilities. Then we recruit a staff person (Felicia Grandinette) to go out into the church and train people to use the curriculum. A hybrid model allows us to stand in front of the church and say, “Listen to Jesus. Love the disabled. Welcome them to your dinner table. Here’s how to disciple them.” Jesus commanded us to go out to the byways and compel them to come in. We are his sent ones.

The same is true with what’s happening internationally with our Person of Jesus Interactive Bible study. No publisher would try to equip the Quechan Indians of the High Andes with a curriculum, but that’s what Richard Eckhardt does. Likewise,

You can see the same pattern in our launch of interactive Bible studies. The world of Bible studies, outside of women’s studies, is almost dead. Each lesson is divided into sections: Time estimates help a leader know how long to linger on a section.

Slow reading of Scripture: Each lesson walks through a passage of Scripture slowly. Questions draw the group’s attention to details that are easily missed. And the slow reading habit helps people get more out of the Bible in their personal study.

Literary insights: The Leader’s Manual provides the leader with literary insights, historical and cultural background information.

Encouraging participant responses: The study often encourages leaders to write participant responses in a brainstorming discussion. This honors them and helps stimulate discussion.

Every study ties back to Jesus: To encounter Jesus in Scripture is to discover that the gospel is not only a theological proposition, but a whole life that you enter, modeled on the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus.

Key points are both discovered and taught: The group often discovers the key teachings of the text through the discussion. When a point bears emphasis, the Leader’s Manual provides a teaching note for the leader.

Page 3: SeeJesus Newsletter: Network jan2015 v11

What’s Different About a seeJesus Interactive Bible Study?

• A shared experience, not a lecture: At the heart of each study are 30-40 questions designed to lead participants to discover the core ideas in the passage. The study becomes a hands-on lab where participants get to see and learn new things – even about a familiar passage.

• Guided interactive: While the study is participant-centered, it’s also leader-directed. You interact, but you also make progress toward a goal.

• Simple and deep: The lessons are simple to lead, but they contain a wealth of historical and literary background.

• Suitable for believers or nonbelievers: The questions don’t expect people to have a biblical worldview. Both believers and nonbelievers can enjoy the experience of discovering scriptural insights through interactive discussion.
