Good morning!

Do you like fairy tales? One of the most famous and well-known Russian fairy tales is The Firebird. This fairy tale was set to music by the famous Russian composer Igor Stravinsky and has become one of the most famous ballets of all time. Pacifi c Symphony will be joined today by the wonderful dancers from Orange County Ballet Theater.

The Firebird is a charming fairy tale about the adventures of the handsome Prince Ivan and his search for the most beautiful bird in the world, the Firebird. Prince Ivan fi nds the Firebird in a tree with golden apples, and is just about to catch her when she grants him one of her magical feathers in exchange for her freedom.

Along Prince Ivan’s journey, he meets and falls in love with a beautiful Princess named Tsarevna. Poor Tsarevna is the prisoner of the evil monster, Kaschei, who can turn people into stone. Prince Ivan must rescue the beautiful Princess from Kaschei. Will true love conquer all? You will just have to wait and see!

Listen for the woodwind family in the orchestra: the fl ute represents the magical Firebird while the oboe represents the Prince. The low brass theme in the opening of the piece represents the evil monster Kaschei. Throughout the performance, you will hear lovely lyrical music mixed with highly rhythmic and energetic music.

I hope you enjoy today’s show, and I hope to see you again next fall when we launch our 2016-17 Family Musical Mornings season.

Music is Life!

Spotlight Instrument: The Woodwind FamilyThe Woodwind Family got its name because most of the instruments used to be made out of diff erent kinds of wood. Today, they are often made out of metal, plastic, wood or a combination of those materials. Woodwind instruments are all shaped like long tubes with an opening at the bottom and a mouthpiece at the top.

To create sound, a woodwind player blows into or across the mouthpiece. Each woodwind instrument has a series of little holes on the outside of the tubing. Players cover these holes with their fi ngers to create diff erent notes. Although both woodwind and brass instruments make sound when air blows through them, woodwind players don’t have to buzz into their mouthpieces like brass players do.

Some woodwind instruments are also known as reed instruments because their mouthpieces use a thin piece of wood, called a reed, which vibrates to make sound when the musician blows into it. The clarinet and saxophone are single reed instruments because they use one reed to make sound. Oboes and bassoons are called double-reed instruments because the piece of reed is actually folded over, end to end, and the two blades of the reed vibrate against each other when the musician plays into the mouthpiece.

Spotlight on The FirebirdThe Firebird is a ballet, which is a story told

entirely through music and dance. The music

of The Firebird is exciting, beautiful and at

times a little scary—just like the story itself!

You can tell what is happening on stage by

watching the dancers’ movements and listening

to the music. In this way, the orchestra acts as

the storyteller of today’s performance, and

several woodwind instruments help play main

characters.

The Firebird ballet premiered in Paris, France

in 1910, and was written for a famous ballet

company, or dance group, called Les Ballet

Russes. Les Ballet Russes were known for

creating exciting new ballets and collaborating

with a wide variety of musicians and artists,

such as Igor Stravinsky, Claude Debussy,

Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse.

Spotlight on The ComposerIgor Fyodorovich Stravinsky was born in 1882 near St. Petersburg, Russia. Both of Stravinsky’s parents were very musical. His father was a famous opera singer who sang at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, and his mother was very skilled at playing piano. Although he grew up in a very musical household, he started out his career in law school, and got all the way to his law fi nals but never graduated.

During his time in law school, he began to study music and was tutored by another famous composer, Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov. He wrote several other pieces of music before The Firebird ballet premiered in 1910, but The Firebird was his most popular composition and helped jump-start his career. The Firebird was the fi rst of several popular ballets written by Stravinsky. Stravinsky also wrote many other pieces of music during his life, including orchestral, vocal, chamber and piano pieces.

Stravinsky moved to the United States in 1939 and lived in Los Angeles. He became a United States citizen in 1945 and ended up living in L.A. longer than he had lived in any other city. Stravinsky has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and was awarded a Grammy Award for Lifetime Achievement.

the fi rebirdORKIDSTRAO range County Ballet Theater (OCBT) is a non-profi t organization dedicated to presenting

ballet and other forms of dance to audiences of all ages and socioeconomic backgrounds. OCBT inspires and nurtures an appreciation for the art of dance through outreach

activities and performances in the community. Many of these performances reach audiences who might not otherwise experience the beauty of a live performance. Under the direction of Dmitri and Jennifer Kulev, OCBT provides a performing outlet for young talented dancers from the Dmitri Kulev Classical Ballet Academy, the offi cial school of OCBT, and from surrounding Orange County communities.

I n 2012 Hillary Estreicher began training with Dmitri Kulev Classical Ballet Academy in South Orange County. Her training focus is in ballet, contemporary and modern dance. She has received awards in various national competitions and most recently performed the leading

role of Marie in the 2015 Orange County Ballet Theater’s production of The Nutcracker.

B ree Burgess Rosen has more than four decades of experience as a professional entertainer, writer, producer, director and music educator. She’s paid her dues with Actors’ Equity, AFTRA and SAG, while paying rent from Manhattan to Hollywood. Locally, she is best

Over the course of more than two decades of annual Lagunatics and many seasons of No Square Theatre, Rosen has helped to raise nearly $1 million for community causes. In recognition of her spirited gifts to Laguna Beach, she has been honored as the town’s 2007 Citizen of the Year and the 2008 Woman of the Year. Rosen was recognized as Woman of the Year for Theatre in Orange County 2012 by Community Times OC. Rosen lives in Laguna Beach with her husband, Leon Rosen, and their son Noah.
