Task Group 1

The Technical Council on Life-Cycle Performance,Safety, Reliability and Risk of Structural Systems was created on October 1st, 2008, replacing the former Technical Administrative Committee on Structural Safety and Reliability and its associated Technical Committees (Buildings, Bridges, Offshore Structures, Fatigue and Fracture) with a new Council with revised and updated objectives and scope.

The Technical Council is part of the SEI-ASCE Technical Activities Division.

Technical Activities Division

The purpose of the SEI-ASCE Technical Activities Division is to advance the science of structural design by increasing the knowledge of the physical properties of engineering materials, developing methods of analysis, studying the relative merits of various types of structures and methods of fabricating, and disseminating knowledge relating to this division of the engineering profession. This is pursued with the dedicated work of its over 70 Technical Committees and one Technical Council, which produce technical papers and publications, organize the annual Structures Congress, and produce the Journal of Structural Engineering, the Journal of Bridge Engineering, and the Practice Periodical on Structural Design and Construction.

Purpose and Objectives

The Technical Council provides a forum for reviewing, developing, and promoting the principles and methods of life-cycle performance, safety, reliability, and risk of structural systems in the analysis, design, construction, assessment, inspection, maintenance, operation, monitoring, repair, rehabilitation, and optimal management of civil infrastructure systems under uncertainty. To achieve these objectives, three Task Groups have been formed within the Technical Council.

ChairDan Frangopol, Lehigh University, Bethlehem, PA, USA

Vice ChairBruce Ellingwood, Colorado State University , Fort Collins, CO, USA

Chair of Task Group 1Mitsuyoshi Akiyama, Waseda University, Tokyo, Japan

Chair of Task Group 2Michel Ghosn, The City College, New York, NY, USA

Chair of Task Group 3Leonardo Duenas-Osorio, Rice University, Houston, TX, USA

Secretary & News CorrespondentSofia Diniz, Federal University of Minas Gerais , Belo Horizonte, Brazil

Task Groups

Task Group 1Life-Cycle Performance of Structural Systems under UncertaintyThe purpose of Task Group 1 is to promote the study, research, and application of scientific principles of safety and reliability in the assessment, prediction, and optimal management of life-cycle performance of structural systems under uncertainty.

Task Group 2Reliability-Based Structural System PerformanceIndicatorsThe purpose of Task Group 2 is to promote the study, research, and application of reliability-based system performance indicators including structural system reliability, robustness, and redundancy.

Task Group 3Risk Assessment of Structural InfrastructureFacilities and Risk-Based Decision MakingThe purpose of Task Group 3 is to promote the study, research and application of scientific principles of risk assessment and risk-based decision making in structural engineering.
