Intensive field studies were undertaken to identify the descendants 01 the eastwh~le leading

Muslim marltime families and some of the information in this thais are based on the interviews from

the members of such families. In the course of the interview, the family records in their possession

were also xtutlnised. Interviews were taken up on a vast stretch of Coromandel Coastal towns such

as Pulicat. Madras, Pondicheny, Cuddalore, PortoNovo, Nagore, Nagapattanam, Tranquebar, Karalkkal,

Thimmalairajanpattanam, Thlrumullaimsal, Adirampattanam, Muthupet, Thopputhurai, Kottaipattanam,

Kattumavadl, Tondi, Mandapam, Rameswaram, Vedalai, Periapattanam, Kilakkara~, Kayalpattanam,

Kulasekarapattanam and Colochel.
