We have seen a movement from elective and cosmetic dentistry to a needs based disease model of treat-ment. This is in response to the changing economic climate and the patient’s focus on health not appear-ance. This year’s program focuses on challenges posed to us each day in the practice. We will address tech-nology, disease control, the single tooth to full mouth rehabilitations and even failures. The whole of the Se-lect Study Club is more than the sum of its parts. We will grow more as we teach each other by sharing our experiences in success and failures. The more we all give, the more we receive in this organization. Team-work is the future of dentistry and that is the founda-tion on which the Select Study Club is based.

The role of the director is to lead the club, organize programs to fit the needs of all members, provide sup-port for all members and help with any needs they may have. The role of the coordinator is to manage the logisitcs of the meetings, make speaker arrangements and member registration. The role of the advisory board is to assist the director with program organization that meets the needs of the club and to assist other members with questions they have on a patient’s care or other challenges affecting their practice.

This year we are launching a small group designed to en-courage the new dentist in the team interdisciplinary den-tistry concept. We call this the Masters of Treatment Plan-ning Program. We will meet four times per year. It will be comprised of the advisory board and new dentists in the area most of which are not members of the Select Study Club. The focus of these meetings will be treatment plan-ning. This is a joint effort of both the Select Study Club and Woodyard Periodontics, PC. The first meeting will be held on Wednesday, September 29, 2010. Tentative meet-ing dates for the next three meetings are November 10, February 2, and May 11.

The SSC Advisory Board Masters Program

This will be an added component to select meetings this year. Members of the advisory board will rotate bringing two articles and presenting a brief summary of the abstract to the members. These articles will come from peer reviewed journals. The validity of the information presented will be examined. Members will be sent an email with the entire article either before or after the meeting.

There will be time at each meeting either during or after meals and at breaks when members can bring patient cases and challenges to share with other mem-bers or with advisory board members for assistance. This club is built upon the team concept.

Over the past few years, I have purchased the DVD series of the Seattle Study Club Symposiums and several other meetings. I am going to make these available to study club members to check out at our meetings. Michelle will have a listing of the library and she will monitor which members are checking out videos. To make sure the vid-eos are available for every member, they will need to be re-turned to Michelle each month so that we can provide this service. She will have the videos on hand at every meeting for check out.

Quarterly, you will receive a copy of the Seattle Study Club journal. This journal has timely articles on treatment plan-ning, new techniques and practice management. It is a high quality journal which contains reliable and useful in-formation.

“Tissue Engineering Around Implants and FPDs: Delayed Provisionalization and Pontic Design”

Implants have allowed the dental practitioner to predictably re-store compromised or missing teeth. Once the implant surgeon has returned the patient, the typical approach is to impress the implants after integration and then seat the final restorations. This approach is efficient and allows a quick restoration for the patient; however, the final results with relationship to soft tis-sue contours may be less than adequate. With proper prepara-tion and provisionalization of the implants, the practitioner can achieve more optimal results by coercing the tissue around the implant restoration. These techniques are paramount for maxi-mizing results in the anterior segments. This presentation will teach the practitioner basic techniques and guidelines to better engineer the soft tissue around an implant by making appropri-ate provisional restorations and pontics in the edentulous areas.L E A R N I N G O B J E C T I V E S :

n Diagnosis and treatment planning of provisional restorations for implant crown and bridge prosthetics.

n Techniques and materials used to develop the provisional im-plant crown and bridge restoration.

n Impression techniques to properly record the resultant tissue contours for the tissue engineered restoration.

Another purpose of this course is to identify new drug-related problems encountered in dental practice and to outline practical management solutions. Controversial issues re-garding the decision to prescribe antibiotics will be examined. Throughout the program, primary emphasis will be placed on developing consistent strategies for treating medically complex dental patients.

Case Flix Treatment Planning Session with Limitations

Real world practice - It is not often that we are presented with a patient with no limitations to what treatment they will have done. This does not mean that comprehensive treatment cannot be em-ployed. At this treatment planning session, we will examine a patient’s treatment done ideally with no limitations. Then, we will explore other options by applying the limitations on treatment that are often presented by our patients.

L E A R N I N G O B J E C T I V E S :

n Utilize an interdisciplinary approach to total case manage-ment.

n Treatment plan a complex case with peers to determine com-prehensive treatment required.

n Discuss rationale for treatment planned.

The 2011 Seattle Study Club Symposium to be held in Key Biscayne, Florida, will focus on failures. It is often said that we learn more from our failures than our successes. Program brochures will be available from the national office in Septem-ber 2010. Registration will open at that time as well. We strong-ly encourage you to make your hotel reservations now by calling 305.365.4500 or 800.241.3333, be sure to mention you are with the Seattle Study Club to receive special room rates. Movie and Discussion“Occlusion Confusion: Unraveling the Mystery” by Dr. Frank Spear

Gnathology, Bioesthetics, Pankey-Dawson, Neuromuscular, Con-formative! These are all current concepts of occlusion being taught and practiced in the U.S. and as is the case with every-thing in dentistry, practitioners want to know which is the best or right approach. Even more than most mechanical procedures done in dentistry, occlusal therapy and its success is highly de-pendent upon the patient’s response to the treatment. With some patients, any approach to occlusion will be successful, and in others a very specific type of occlusion will be necessary for suc-cess. This program will briefly review each of the approaches to occlusion listed above and what their benefits and risks are. It will focus on the findings that determine how best to develop the oc-clusion. The issues of condylar position, vertical dimension and the envelope of function in occlusal design will be addressed, with recommendations for managing each, dependent upon the patient’s presenting condition and treatment plan.

L E A R N I N G O B J E C T I V E S :
