Dear Parents and Carers

Anticipated enrolments

In the next few weeks, I will need to submit a revision of our anticipated enrolments for 2018. The accuracy of this information is vital as it affects our staffing entitlements and resource funding by the Department. At present, our projected enrolments for 2018 indicate that we will maintain our current class structure of 34 classes. However, if we lose a few more students we may reduce to 33 classes. It is very important that you inform the school if you are not expecting your children to return to Carlton PS in 2018. Many thanks for your support with this important information.

Selection Panel Training

In recent weeks, we have conducted recruitment panels for 2 permanent classroom teachers and a permanent Assistant Principal. Additionally, the department has appointed an ESL teacher through the transfer system. We are in the process of employing an Arabic Community Languages teacher 2 days a week. Also, I am expecting the department to appoint a targeted graduate teacher by the beginning of 2018 as well as another transfer. Congratulations to Ms Wendy He and Ms Christie Read (Currently Hurstville PS) for their successful applications as permanent classroom teachers.

Ms He demonstrated outstanding skills as classroom teacher through her CV and interview. Her referees provided strong support to her application and she is to be commended for her successful appointment.

Ms Read from Hurstville PS demonstrated excellent skills as classroom teacher through her CV and interview. Her referees also provided strong support to her application and we are excited to have her joining us in 2018.

The recruitment process is a very detailed and time consuming. Thank you to all the parents who have given their valuable time & support to ensure that we engage the highest quality teachers. As soon as I know the names of the new staff I will let the community know.

We have a few parents that have formal Selection Panel Training but we need more parents trained in Selection Panel Training to assist us in positions that arise in 2018. Selection Panel Training is now available online. The online training takes approximately 1.5 hours and once completed a certificate can be printed off and brought in to the school.

P&C Meeting

At our final P&C meeting for the year we allocated some time to look at parent responses on the online survey. A

huge thank you to everyone who has found the time to provide constructive responses in moving forward as a school

community. In the next newsletter, I will provide a summary of common themes. Thank you to Mr Richard Jones our

proactive P&C President for his passion at commitment to the Carlton PS. Equally, many thanks to all members of the

P&C who give their time to listen to school community concerns, provide possible solutions and engage in special

events. Hopefully, we will see you at the Thank You Morning Tea on 6 December 2017 at 11.00 am.

P&C News We had an enjoyable and productive P&C meeting this Tuesday. We talked

about the general themes which had come out of the school survey which

will provide input into the school planning for the next 3 years. We discussed

a cyber-bullying presentation and a proposed parent information evening on

the PDHPE personal development program both for next year in term 1.

Many other topics which were also raised from morning drop off to holiday

care, staff changes and the bell.

P&C Meeting – Next Year in week 3

The next meeting will be held in week three of term 1, 2018. It would be

great to see you all there to hear about what your kids are learning and make

suggestions or ask questions about the direction of the school.

Remember don’t wait until the next meeting to get in touch! If you have any

suggestions or questions, please contact the P&C via email on:

[email protected].

Administration You will have received your Account statement for the remainder of the year. These statements will include “end of year” excursions as well as excursion notes. Please ensure that you:

1. Return excursion notes as well as payment. If your child is not going to be at school on the day of the excursion please see the office and note this on your statement when returning it. We will ask you to fill out an absence form for the teacher.

2. If your child is in Year 6 and moving onto High School next year, please take particular interest in your statement as some students have a credit on their account. These credits will show on your statement and will reflect the balance owed after this credit is applied.

3. You will see the Voluntary Contributions appear on your invoice if they are unpaid. The finance system does not allow us to take off any outstanding Voluntary Contributions until the school year is over. These important funds are used to purchase all the additional things we use at school such as sporting equipment, technology and other curriculum resources. Your contribution to the Carlton Public School learning experience would be greatly appreciated.

Due date : 30 November 2017.

School Banking The school banking coordinators rostered on Tuesday 28 November are Sharon, Angela, Rachel and Lilly Wang. Rewards have been ordered and should be in the next couple of weeks. Congratulations to 3 Red and 1/2 Yellow for having the most bankers on Tuesday 21 November.

Come and Be a Mentor at Carlton Public School

Johnny and Kevin spend an hour together every week as part of our Carlton Kids

mentor program. During their time together they made some cool paper ninja stars and

played around with this huge Earth Ball. The Earth Ball and lots of other equipment was

obtained by a community grant that Kevin helped us get! If you have an hour a week to

spare and can be a caring adult in a child’s life please come and see Miss Morrison. We

need lots of people who can have fun and also make a difference

Indonesian Language News Term 4 is well underway in the Indonesian room. Over the past six weeks the students have been learning about

Indonesian folktales and heroes, and representing these tales in wonderful watercolour artworks displayed in the

Indonesian room.

Throughout the remainder of the term the focus will be on creative and outdoor activities as we move towards the

end of the term. Sports, art and craft, and music will be some of the activities that the students will be participating

in. “Sepak bola” (soccer) is one of the most popular sports in Indonesia as it is for many students at Carlton Public

School.

Last term the students participated in the Modern Language Teachers Association’s writing competition, “Kompetisi

Siswa.” The works were fantastic and seeing the children produce their entries was one of Bu Peace and my

highlights for the year. Their works will be returned shortly for them to take home.

Chinese News from Mrs Liang

The Chinese Learning Centre in Year 1 and Year 2 Chinese classes

A Chinese Learning Centre has been set up in the Year 1 and Year 2 Chinese classes. During lessons,

different groups of learning activities are arranged and students take turn to participate in game-

like activities to reinforce their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. Students enjoy the

Centre very much.

Acting and

singing in the Year 3 and 4 Chinese classes

This term, apart from learning some Chinese stories, myths and legends, Year 3 and 4 students also

learn to sing a well- known song called “The Descendants of the Dragon.” Some students are very

excited about the fact that their parents also know the song very well. I have received positive

feedback from parents about their children learning the song. Below are the Year 4 students doing a

role play on “The Three Monks” and singing “The Descendants of the Dragon.”

The use of Google Classroom and other ICT in the Year 5 and 6 Chinese classes

This term, Year 5 and 6 students study three Chinese myths and legends, “The Archer and the Ten Suns”,

“The

Journey to the West” and “Mulan.” Students are required to electronically complete tasks on the three

stories through Google Classroom and other apps. Through completing the tasks, they do not just practise

their language skills, but also learn various other study skills, such as using Chinese dictionaries, online pinyin

tools and Chinese word processing skills. Later on, they will also use an iPad to create an e-book.

Report: Earthquake-Proof Structures

As Stage 3 is learning about natural disasters, we have conducted many different experiments all

about Mother Nature’s amazing powers. We have conducted experiments about how volcanoes

erupt, and now, we are learning how to construct a structure out of mini marshmallows and

toothpicks. The constructions were shaken in a tub of jelly to see how strong they were.

Our structures at first used only 30 toothpicks and 30 marshmallows. The structures created were

hard to keep upright and kept on collapse in. Our experiments were fun and very sugary and

these fluffy, puffy sweets had the capability of absorbing the shocks of the shaking wobbling

gelatin.

During this experiment, we learnt lots about structures and their jobs. Triangles worked

spectacularly, keeping the buildings straight. During the second experiment, we were allowed to

use an infinite amount of marshmallows and toothpicks, but being sensible, not taking all of

everything. When making, we created a wider base which distributes the shocks from the

wobbling jelly and this distribution of the energy was enough to keep all of the structures created

fully upright.

What we learnt:

A bigger base will stabilise the structure.

The weight needs to be heavier at the base.

The marshmallow adds stability and absorbs the

shock.

Diagonals strengthen the structure and make them

rigid. Triangles

are the best.
