    Inclusion North is running a network

    aimed at people who have a paid or

    volunteer role in supporting a self-

    advocacy group run by people with

    learning disabilities.

    This network is for Inclusion North

    member areas only.

    These are the notes from our first

    meeting held in York on the 8th July2015.

    The network is a great opportunity for

    people to come together to:

    • Share examples of good practice

    and learning

    • Work together to find solutions to

    challenges• Explore any things we might work

    on together

     At the meeting there were 10 peoplefrom 5 different advocacy groups.

    What did we talk about?

    We started the meeting by introducingourselves.

    We said where we were from and why we

    had come to the meeting.

    This is what some people said.

    I am here to work

    with people and get

    a stronger voice.

    To meet people and

    network.

    To find out how

    other groups

    encourage people

    to come along.

    To find out if there

    are different waysto keep people

    interested in

    advocacy.

    To share ideas;

    what's working andwhat isn't.

    If you could change anything what would

    you change?

    This is what some people said.

     All information is

    easy to understand.

    Self-advocacy is

    taught in schools

    Councils promote

    all things relating to

    disabilities.

    Being listened to

    and given the sameopportunities.

     All self-advocacy

    groups takenseriously.

    Funding.

    If I had a magic wand……

    TrainingSome advocacy groups provide training

    to other organisations like the:• Council

    • Schools

    • Probation service

    • Doctors and nurses

    They get paid to do this.

    Working with othersSome groups have strong links with the

    council, the Learning Disability

    Partnership Boards, services and other

    groups .

    FundingSome groups have been given money

    to set up different things.

    One group has set up a café where

    people can be trained.

    Safe Places SchemesSome groups have been involved in

    setting up Safe Places and training

    others.

     Also took part in making a DVD.

    Some groups have their information onthe internet:

    • Facebook

    • Twitter

    • Website

    People share good informationSome groups receive information about

    what is happening in their area and are

    invited to meetings.

    Not being listened toSome groups do not feel listened to

    and go to meetings where they are not

    included.

    Awareness in the communitySome people do not go out where they

    live because of how they are treated.

    FundingSome groups are not made aware of

    when there is funding and they miss

    out.

    Information that is easy to

    understandPeople are not able to get involved

    because some information is hard to

    understand.

    Things like applying for funding.

    Set up a group onFacebook or a

    Googlegroup so that

    we can keep in touch

    and share information

    Share our ideas

    about things like

    training

    Share information

    about work that is

    being done in

    different areas like

    transport, bus passes

    Keep all information

    about advocacy on a

    website so we can all

    use it, add information

    and share with others

    Come along to the next networkmeeting

    We can offer space for up to 2

    people from each organisation.

    We know some areas have more

    than one organisation and that

    some organisations work in lots of

    different places.

    We will make sure everybody gets

    a chance to come along.

    The dates of the next meetings are:

    • October 13th in Newcastle

    • December 15th in York

    • February 16th 2016 in Newcastle
